  1. could you put it out on a porch or something with a sign "free to good home" you may get some one to take it that way, although people will also come around during council pick up & go through your rubbish & will most likely pick it up anyways
  2. This pup may benefit from a good puppy school if there is one in your area. Sure go and have a chat with the owners if you like, they probably have no idea. Perhaps offer them a book or a print-out on puppy care if you have one (vets will often supply this if you ask). Something along the lines of "oh I saw your new puppy the other day, I have this from when my dog was a pup and thought it might be useful for you". They may listen and appreciate the help, they may tell you to bugger off. Unfortunately you can't save everyone. This may help: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=117592 http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=150837 i know you can''t take every single precaution in the world for anythinng, but you have to at least try & i think taking a puppy that is so young out into an open area to do his business is just asking for trouble their front lawn is a corner block and has no fencing what so ever, and loads of dogs roam the area and since the house has been vacant for a few mths no one has been there to clean up the messes left out the front , i used to cross the road b4 i got to their house cause of all the dogs that you see wandering about there, there is 7 houses in this block & so far (fingers crossed) our dogs are the only ones to have never escaped, the others, daily, are wandering the streets and the owners don't care, so many times i have almost run one over as they just dart out here & there. the owners all have big dogs & small fences - common sense - get a bigger fence, there is a puppy school but it is more for the older puppies not ones under 14 weeks of age thanks i might take that way of talking to them up, just innocently - "oh puppy training is so hard, here are some books/info that helped my with mine" sort of approach but what can ya do really, people will always smile & say thanks for your advice but it is my ----------- & i will do as i please
  3. it does not build up in the rats system that is why it needs a few feds to kill it, i guess it is like human they need to drink loads of water each day as we use it up through the day, this poison obviously gets into their system and their body uses it against them - i guess
  4. i second the Bayer - Racumin this product kills rats & mice and large residue does not build up in the rodents system thus harming any animal that tries to eat it, we use it all the time and with both 2 cats & dogs, have never had any harm come to them the dogs are always bring the dead mice to the back door & have never gotten sick if i knew how to attatch the link here i would but i don't so i can't - sorry but if you type in Racumin it will bring up loads of info for you, when you buy the packaging it does state "harmful to pets" but on their web site is states "Racumin is a multiple feed bait, which means rats and mice must feed several times to ingest a lethal dose. Thus large residues do not build up in the body of the rodent. This minimises the risk of secondary poisoning, where an animal that eats a poisoned rodent is poisoned". see how yo go
  5. any tablets i give my dogs i grind them up and put them in their breakfast with loads of wet food, this way it is all consumed, they love the wet food & lick the bowl clean & you know the tablet is gone
  6. will do tonite, hopefully they won''t take offence or think i am butting in,
  7. yeah, that's why i said that i did not know about the circumstances, cause i know some puppies can be left with no mother, that was no my main horror, my horror was the out the front of house stuff we get a lot of stray dogs wandering this area and know the people who own some of them & you could put money on the fact that they would not vaccinate their dogs, i did mention to them in regards to taking out side, and all they said was that they were watching him so nothing would happen, & that they have put down lawn seed & new grass so there their puppy was safe, so they seem to know about diseases but wouldn't the soil still have contaminates in it if in fact a dog with parvo/disease was to go potty on this area???? they seem to think that just watching him was enough??? will walk past tommorrow and try to catch up with them, but you know when you just don't want to be a pain in the backside and be interferring, just don't want to cross that line if you know what i mean
  8. went for a walk this evening & past my new neighbours, they were out the front of their house with a little puppy, he was doing his business on the front lawn, this is not an enclosed yard, so other dogs on the loose can wander all over this lawn - AND DO, i have seen them my horror is the age of this little puppy, the owner says he was 5 weeks old & i saw her hubby taking him out for potty last week , so they got him at 4 weeks old or earlier i don't know the circumstances of how they got this puppy so young, he does not look neglected - good coat, seemed happy, looked plump, so i don't think he has been dumped/neglected Surely such a young puppy should not be doing his business in such an open area that other dogs often roam, he is so tiny, he looked to be a pug puppy, would this puppy have had any vaccinations at all?????? surely he should still be with his mother edited for spelling
  9. OMG - sounds harder to pack for a puppy than it does to pack a kid for a camping trip , that said i hope you & your puppy have a great time,
  10. what about a garden shed to put the kennels in, we used to live down that way - just outside of the ACT yrs ago, we had two dogs and we bought a garden shed and had the opening close to the house so that the wind would not get in & put both their kennels in that, we had put bricks on the floor and this raised their kennels off ground level & put some boarding down on top of the bricks then covered this with loads of newspaper, then got some removalists blankets from magnet mart and put those on the flooring for insultation, works wonders, we left the door off and had it about 3 foot out from a wall of the house, this stopped the rain & wind from getting in, & plugged up all the joins and added a small gutter so as to stop the drips at the door they can have their own home
  11. i can't enforce the "leave it" command enough, it is good when walking a puppy and they come across some dropped food (that you would not know what it is, let alone where it has been) and they try to eat it, god knows what they could get by eating the dropped food. i used to walk back & forth up the front of my house for weeks, holding a treat in my had that my puppy liked, i would get her to walk a few steps & then give her the treat, this got her used to staying by my side, the better she got, the further we walked till we went right around the block, she does tend to try to go off on her own path/scent finding mission - rarely now, but i correct her with "leave it" & she is quickly back at my side, good luck with your walking
  12. my cav does this to our foxy, she follows him around the yard, and hangs off ALL his dangly bits, he does not seem to mind, when they play fetch, they bring back the toy together - it is obviously too heavy for one to carry , but if he moves to fast for her to help him carry it she just latches on to his tail and follows him back, sometimes he does let out a yelp if she gets to carried away, but not often, i think they are just playing, i don't think it is dominance as come food time she will hoovers hers up and he takes forever, but he will not allow her near his food & she knows it, so she just sits in front of his food bowl very patiently, she knows that he is the boss
  13. over jan/feb [possibly as far back as dec], i've rescued probably 15 or 16 [separately but sometimes two at a time] baby blue tongues from my back yard --- both my dogs alert me and bobbie, my cat, sits there and eyeballs them [she got too close to one and it latched on to her cheek, but thankfully no harm was done] we don't know where these babies are to be able to get to them b4 the dogs do, as we have found them all over the bakyard, the first we know about it, is when the dogs start to bark, we fly out and try to get to them b4 any harm is done, they don''t attack the big ones, only the babies it is great that your able to rescue them.
  14. my dogs have spent the last 2 weeks eating baby blue tongues, unfortunatly none of the attacked ones have survived BUT we did find one b4 they did & resuced it & took it to the bush edited to add below - oh and once my cav chased a butterfly, she jumped up to catch it & i thought she missed as i saw it fly away, but i was wrong, she came over and sat near me as if nothing was amiss or in her mouth, just looked at me with her sad eyes, then opened her mouth and out flew this beautiful butterfly, then off she ran to chase it again BUT this time it flew up to high for her to get

  17. i trained my puppy with some treats, put her in the bed and said "bed" then walked away and told her to "come" i did this back & forth a few times a day with her training and it works now really well, i tell her it is time for bed and away she goes
  18. ok thanks, thought maybe i was going blind as i could not find it
  19. where is the off topic section, i can't find it, so i would be one of the people who can't access it, uhm why cant i access it?? would it because i am new???
  20. it is all going to be trial & error to find a treat that your dog both likes & can stomach, they need variety so don't just get one sort of treat, mix them up so the puppy gets variety
  21. we are thinking the are in a garden area, where they are protected, it is when they come out that they get into trouble, or could also be under a cement slab that is a shed, there is cavities under it as it was were mice & snakes used to hide in my chook pen! we don't see the babies till it is too late, the dogs dont attack the mum - they just bark at her, but the babies they atttack, our grass is kept really short - cause of snakes, and as a result when the blue tongues go wandering they are caught
  22. question - how many babies do blue tongues have?????? we have a blue tongue that lives between my house and the neighbours on each side, it has had babies in my yard, problem is mum has done a runner to the neighbours & left her babies in the yard - SOMEWHERE!!!!!! since last sunday our two dogs have found 5, that we know of. they have attacked them, punctured their skins, broken their backs, we take them to the vet - as advised by wires, & they have put them down, what i want to know is how many babies do they have???? we don't know where exactly in the yard they are coming from, we have searched & searched but can't find them, then low & behold the dogs start barking and i go out and find them tossing the poor blue tongue in the air & these are the ones we know about, as somedays i have not been home all day & god only knows how many they get then. i know we can't stop them from doing this as it is a dogs instinct to catch & eat, but i just want to know how many more are there????
  23. it uses citronella to keep the dogs away, they hate the smell of it, i saw on bondi vet the other week a show Dr Chris did for "New puppies in your house" he showed what to do when a cavoodle was digging up this chics garden - get a water balloon and blow it up, place it in the hole the dog has dug in the garden and cover lightly with dirt, when the dog digs here they will pop the balloon and get a fright - don't put water in the balloon, also he put vicks along the edge of the pot plant holder and said this should also keep the puppy off hope this helps
