  1. What about a slice of lamb neck? And freeze it first so it takes a while to get through the meaty bit. Takes my pup a good 2 hrs of chewing to get through it
  2. We'll be there on the Saturday to watch agility and to show Ziva on Sunday
  3. Shame they're not taking any more orders By end of week i should be oh cool - I'd better get looking and deciding on what I want!

  5. What a load of crap! So all breeders show their dogs now do they! She doesn't need to go prancing In the show world to know If she's a good example of the breed and worthy of breeding. There are plenty of "other" activities people can do with their dogs apart from showing. ETA: Have a look at what's happening In the show ring with Am Staffs! IMO too many way off In their standards. Some are so huge they can almost pass as Mastiffs I didn't get the feeling moosepup was saying just showing - but they didn't exclude agility, OB, ET etc. According to my breeder and ppl who see a lot of my breed - I have a very nice girl but I am reluctant to breed her unless I can better the breed. I've found the best way to meet the most ppl in my breed, learn about the various lines, figuring out what is a fault etc is to show. We are not aiming for a Ch title - but wanted to learn more about our breed.
  6. Look inside and if it looks black and gunky - it's an ear infection. If needs be shine a torch inside
  7. We were really happy with Hills Kennel Club on Mon nights - and you can move on to proper obedience classes if that's what you'd like to do (also good for socialisation!)
  8. Don't dogs have different sorts of growls as well? When we play tug my pup gets growly - but it's different from her "protective" growl IYKWIM
  9. Is this for tomorrow? If so, what breed and I can tell you how many are entered before yours. Thanks Stonecutter but Im only in on Sunday so maybe I will get mine tomorrow. Good luck on Sunday! Fri will be my first show on our own without people we know to hang out with (and OH will be at work) - so if you see an Asian gal with a fringe and a puppy Jap spitz - come up and say hi!

  11. I got Friday's numbers on Tuesday I think.
  12. Naomi - I think it's been 4 weeks of constantly praising and treating stand and ignoring sit (Ziva gets pats for Sit but treats for Stand) to have a hand signal that works and she stands for more than a micro second. I slowly increased the time from click/marker word to treat and also taught her to "watch" - that is, look at the treat. With every kibble meal we train walking/heeling, then standing - sometimes she puts her butt down, but if I'm quick enough with heel, then stop moving, then command "stand", then treat really quickly (though working on leaving it longer until treat). We're learning this for conformation rather than obedience but I assume the principles would be the same.
  13. This I found fellow exhibitors were very freely dispensing advice at our 2 shows so far - I do have help from my breeder, but on the day you sometimes have a "what am I doing" moment!
  14. Some would say that's a good sign - it's something important to you and you want to do a good job - nothing wrong with that I still have nightmares about the first teaching day of the year - after 10 yrs of teaching! (and it's the name bad dream)
  15. We taught fetch by first teaching "take" for something out of my hand, then "give" to release (and a treat to lure away). Then I started tossing the toy 30cm away, Ziva would go grab it to bring back to me to swap for a treat. Then we just threw further and further to the point I can chuck a toy 15m and she'll go after it. Not sure if this is the right way - but it worked!
  16. Definitely though I need to have time to consistently apply it at home where the barking is worst (I'm on the last stretch of my phd thesis so I'm mostly just ignoring the crazy barking while I frantically write)
  17. Are those books? I've been trying clicker training during his walks for when he sees exciting stimulus but it doesn't seem to be working to divert his attention. You could be holding a fried chicken on a stick out for him and he'll still find other dogs waaaaay more interesting and pull to get to them. I don't know how it would help when he wouldn't be barking when I'm outside with him. LAT comes from the book Control Unleashed but this website sums it up http://clickerleash.wordpress.com/2009/08/23/look-at-that-a-counterintuitive-approach-to-dealing-with-reactive-dogs/ I've even been using LAT at obedience training when other dogs start barking - even if not at Ziva, it's like she wants to put in her 2 cents! Click To Calm is a book by Karen Pryor I think I tried recalling Ziva - she would come, get the treat and then run off again - even if she saw I had more treats!
  18. Would Look At That or Click to Calm help? We have a similar situation and I will be looking at those as options - look at the arousing item, then look back at me without barking, then treat.
  19. How do people go putting up one on their own? The back looks pretty hefty (24kg according to the Oztrail website) and I'm only small and not very muscley.
  20. Yay - good to hear she's improving
  21. Run free Cindy Big hugs to you Sue
  22. I wonder if you can give a dog cranberry capsules like you would do for humans?
  23. Someone at the training place I go to uses these for a toy poodle and swears by them http://showstackers.com/
