  1. Oh my god Nicole, I'm so sorry to read about Charlotte I'm so lucky to have met her, she's a beautiful girl and bless you for making this call. I can only imagine how hard the next week is going to be Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
  2. Christina, that second pic of Katy is priceless! LOVE it! This is Maggie at .. I dunno, some small number of weeks (I got her when she was 3 years, but was sent this pic) Day after I got her, at 3 years (you can see her little shaved belly from her spey, aww) And a recent one, wearing a coat my sister made her
  3. Yep, they do unless they've passed the Greyhound RAcing Vic (GRV) assessment program, and are wearing a green GAP collar. I've actually seen a few greys without muzzles on around here, which don't wear the green collar, so I'm assuming the owners are being naughty.. Just to clarify - the requirement that they wear muzzles is because the legislation considers greyhounds to be "livestock" rather than companion animals, as they're bred to race. That's all :)
  4. My favourite "misconception" about Poodles is that they are prissy. People have asked me that before - she's so cute, but is she a bit prissy? What does that even MEAN? Yeah, she refuses to leave the house without doing her makeup and she bites me when she's not immaculately groomed? She won't walk on wet grass? She's a fricking dog. Prissy is a stupid description of ANYTHING, let alone a breed of dog!
  5. My poodle does too - I think it's a comfort thing. The licking gets slower as she falls asleep and sometimes she falls asleep with her tongue out a bit.. Edited to provide pictorial evidence (excuse the "au naturale" hairdo)
  6. God, my Toy Poodle chased a burgler out of my partner's house last week too! He opened the front door and she (Maggie) went insane and ripped the lead out of his hand, barking and screaming manically.. a guy ran out of a room, out the back door and over the back fence, with 4kg Maggie "The Killer" on his heels. Scary His car got broken into on Monday night too, and apparently the house across the road got broken into last weekend. GAH I hate people!!! So glad they didn't actually break in and get anything from your house trinabean!
  7. I don't understand why people get offended when questions like the OP's question are asked. I don't know much about CKCS, beyond having met lots of pets etc, and my impression has also been that they are prone to quite a few health problems. That impression may be wrong, but to be "offended" or respond in such a sarcastic manner, as in "you've got to be KIDDING, are you SERIOUSLY even asking that question!" is counter-productive. By all means, people with breed experience and who know and own or breed healthy dogs should correct that assumption if it's incorrect, but to flat out deny that it's the case seems quite ridiculous to me. Most breeds are associated with some kind of health problem, and of course, some a prone to more problems than others. It doesn't mean you can't get a healthy specimen and find a good breeder who endeavours to eliminate those problems in the breed. I'm sure that many people's bad experiencse are through BYB dogs or irresponsibly bred dogs- but those are still experiences, and they colour people's understanding. Let's at least acknowledge that. I personally know a couple of owners who have owned CKCS before, and have also said that they would not get another one in the future due to having lost a dog/s prematurely. To deny that that's the case is a bit ridiculous. It's not something confined to that breed - I know people who have owned Irish Wolfhounds and Great Danes who love hte breed but have said that they couldn't own another, as they couldn't deal wtih the short lifespan. It's just.. a fact.
  8. Guys, this thread is from December 2011..
  9. The most vital things are probably to make sure you have the yard proofed (as persephone said), and bear in mind that if s/he wanted to, the pup could probably get under or through a MUCH smaller hole than you expect! It's amazing how stretchy they can be when they want to be. Make sure you have a bed ready where pup is going to sleep. Get ready to register with the council, depending your council you may have a week or so grace period. In mine it's 2 weeks I think, before you could incur a fine if caught. Though it may be a longer period before pups need to be registered. Have you decided what you are going to feed, and spoken to the breeder to work out what they've been feeding, and where to get that food?
  10. love her face as she runs off afterwards!
  11. It's also a bit of a danger to judge national trends etc based on internet forums - what appears to be most or least common based on users of a dog forum isn't necessary reflective of the broader population, and could be quite misleading.
  12. Ohh I wish! I think I'm a no at this stage, though might end up being able to.. I'm getting my wisdom teeth out on Wednesday so it depends on how I'm feeling (or looking..!)
  13. Jess doesn't come onto dol often so I will answer for her, the full amount was raised and the surgery is all paid for, Dr.Punke is a very generous and skilfull man, we are so very grateful to him. A huge thankyou to all who helped make this possible. Wonderful, thanks Trish :)
  14. Rescued with Love have been shortlisted for a Leader Local Grant (that's Leader Local, as in the Leader local newspapers). These $1,000 grants are awarded to community projects etc, and anyone in Vic is eligible to vote for shortlisted projects. I'm a huge supporter of RWL and aim to start fostering with them as soon as I move into my new house (a few weeks!). I hope this kind of thread is allowed - it's not of a commercial nature, as RWL are a registered charity and a well run and wellr espected rescue group. I'm just hoping it's ok to encourage people to vote for them, as they're truly deserving of this award and would do great things with the money if they won. RWL take on mostly small dogs, many are seniors (though by no means all, they have recently had some puppies) and in need of health care. They do lots of dentals, luxating patella surgery, sometimes tumor removal .. the usual suspects for small and/or dogs. To vote for RWL, do the following: 1. Go to www.leaderlocalgrants.com.au 2. Register 3. They will send you an email with a link to set a password 4. Click on link and set yourself a password 5. Click Save 6. Go to Current Ideas 7. Search for 'Rescued with Love' - there's a picture of a little black and white dog (her name was Cricket). 8. You can add up to 10 votes. (I did!) Thanks so much.
  15. Could it perhaps be as simple as that he's not available until he's passed those tests? Might be wishful thinking, but it could theoretically be something that simple.. ? Ie, there might not be a difference between being 'available' and being 'up for adoption'?
  16. Yay for a good news story! I have one too: the other day at the park I let my dog off leash and gave her the release word, and she started trotting off, then noticed two of her friends (a GR and a Bernese MD) crossing the road away from the park. To my horror, my Maggie totally changed direction and took off after them barking furiously. And then (this is the good part!) I yelled MAGGIE, she turned, COME, and she came straight back to me and sat at my feet. God I nearly had a heart attack, she was right about to run across the road but stopped at my command
  17. Just saw this thread - you've done a brilliant job, Jess! (Am I right in assuming that you are Jess, and the dog is Jessie? Sorry if I've got your name wrong! :D ) Did you end up raising the rest of the money? Or are you still paying it off?
  18. It's probably more a case of dogs being too YOUNG to start!
  19. I was going to suggest RWL with love also. Their dogs are usually small, often maltese type, and vary in ages. They have a few dogs at the moment that may fit the bill: Mr Jones (11 y/o Malt x), Phoebe (6 y/o Pom), Danny (9 y/o malt x).. actually, the more I look at their dogs for adoption, it seems that ANY of them would be great for your situation. http://www.rescuedwithlove.org/dogsweneedahome.htm (I'm such a fan of RWL, am going to foster for them very soon (if they want me!))
  20. What a terrible tragedy RIP Dr Yates
  21. Can somebody please explain clearly a few things? It seems like I should be up in arms about something but I'm not really sure why.. - what is the impact of ANKC not recognising flyball titles? Is this different to recognising flyball as a sport? - what does AFA do, and what exactly do they WANT from the ANKC? If I've interpreted Haredown's posts correctly, there are two ways of going about the same thing, and a lot of anger at one way not working. I can sense the anger but I'm lost as to exactly what hte problem is..
  22. I was about to reply until I realised this was an old thread! I'm so glad you've got things under control a bit more, and good on you for taking on the 7 year olds. Unfortunately, the most problems most peopel seem to have are with other peoples' dogs.. I'm so tempted to show this thread to a family member and a family friend who have BOTH just bought littermate puppies in the last 3 months :doh but I guess the best thing is to just be there with info and help when problems arise.
  23. Oh yes, Maggie makes it impossible to watch any documentary at all, or anything with animals in it. I tried to watch Best in Show once.. nope. It used to be cute, when she'd run around behind the TV to try and find where the dogs were coming from (if she could hear them). Now it's just infuriating!
  24. Yep, absolutely - I completely agree. I was just not sure whether I'd missed some info! Thanks Cat and BC!
  25. I haven't checked recently but I thought I'd read that there were no marks on him at all and the owners were pending blood test results to establish a cause of death. I'm coming to this thread late - but I did have a quick read of it.. is this Tank the same Tank that was reported missing on FB and over forums etc a few weeks ago? I thought he was an Aus Bulldog, and that he was found dead but had no marks on him or apparent cause of death, adn that blood tests would be able to shed some light on the situation. Given that, I'm just confused as to how he is involved in the dog fighting - I was under the impression that these are separate issues. Is it just speculation or is there some evidence that links to dog fighting rings were made, with the Tank case?
