  1. Has anyone here had any experience with rolled collars? My dog's getting quite bald around the neck area (had a flat nylon collar) and apparently they help stop hair loss? Or would a collar that is fleeced on the inside be appropriate as well?
  2. I think that's a fair question. Personally I wouldn't leave my dogs in the car for more than 5 minutes on a hot day. Not only am I paranoid about the heat but also worried about my dogs being stolen because a friend of mine lost a staffy this way and even after 10 years it still haunts her.
  3. I think a lot of people think that if the window is down (even an inch!) the car won't overheat. Next time I'll take the number plate, inform the RSPCA and call for a PA.
  4. The other day it would have been about 32 degrees and I noticed a dog in a car with only one window down about an inch. The dog was panting a bit but looked pretty relaxed. I'm not really sure how dogs respond to heatstroke though. I waited for a good 15-20 minutes for the owners to come back but in the end I had to leave. I left a note on the car saying that hot cars kill dogs, having the window down a few centimeters is not good enough. Did I do the right thing or should I have waited? I didn't want to end up in a huge argument with the owner because I was a bit upset about it. What would you do in this situation? I notified one of the sales people in Bunnings who kindly lent me some sticky tape for the note.
  5. Susan-My staffy always manages somehow to remove any clothes I put on her. I don't know if this is breed related or just my dog not liking the feel of clothes on her. I'd probably look at sunscreen options.
  6. I agree that a crate is an ideal option. You can start off crating in the living room and then move the crate somewhere like the laundry and eventually outside.
  7. I also have no problem with this program and I'm a huge softie. The animals are going to be PTS anyway and it gives a student the opportunity to be able to gain confidence in their clinical skills. Yes it's sad that these animals are euthanised by seriously, people should save their anger for all the animals who are living in constant torment through animal testing and experimentation. I'm sure they don't get treated as well. Just out of curiosity and slightly off topic do vet surgeons have to be able to perform all types of surgery from ortho to general? Or do they specialise?
  8. Interesting discussion. I must admit, I don't really know much about prey drive so it's been very informative. I'm agree with those who say the dogs should be PTS. In the past I've had several issues with the owner of a couple of large dogs who have escaped from their yard and have attacked my elderly staffy while I've had her on a lead. The first time I had to quickly lift her up on someone's parked car to get her away from them, the second time my mother was walking her and the dogs had my staffy by the throat (lucky for mum someone was able to assist her). It's only a matter of time before someone or their dog gets hurt. If my dog was killed in this horrific manner I couldn't give a rats about the killer dogs prey drive, I'd want those dogs euthanised because their behaviour should not be my or anyone elses problem. And can you imagine what it would be like afterwards for the owner of the mauled JRT to see these dogs walking around in public like nothing had happened? For those of you who are against these dogs being PTS what would be your solution to prevent this sort of behaviour?
  9. It's such a horrible experience being told your dog has cancer. I'm so glad that your staffy is doing well 12 months post op.
  10. I have a strong dislike for a friends dog. I feel bad for them because they've done all the right things by going through puppy pre school, obedience training etc. I get the impression that they're at the end of their tether with him. He's ok around dogs he knows but in when being walked he is aggressive towards other dogs. When I first met him as a puppy he kept growling at us and seemed quite fearful. It's the same everytime we go to their house. As a visitor I feel like my safety is at risk and I hate going there now. I've been around dogs all my life and I just get a gut feeling that sooner or later this dog is going to snap at someone. I've delicately suggested to them that perhaps they need to see someone who specializes in dog behaviour.
  11. Ollie's story gives me much hope for my older girl. What trooper! Last July my 12 year old staffy Isa was diagnosed with 3 mast cell tumours and three melanoma's. She came back from surgery with six incisions and we spent an anxious week waiting for results. The MCT (two on her side, one on her upper back leg) were grade 2 with well defined margins. Melanomas were benign. We were warned the MCT would probably come back and in December we found another MCT on her belly and two more melanomas so she needed another operation. Like Ollie, Isa seems to bounce back pretty well after surgery but I've noticed she's not as energetic and sleeps more often. I'm not sure whether it's age or related to her having mast cell carcinoma. I dread the thought of metastasis. I have just found another smallish lump under her armpit last night and another smaller one one her belly. I feel so guilty about the possibility of putting her through more surgery. She's almost 13 and the vet has told us that chemotherapy isn't really an option for us because of her age. I hope that like your dog Ollie she has a couple more years left but you just never know.
  12. Can someone please tell me where I can get one of these couch potato staffies? My two are running me ragged! I'm not sure that an apartment would be ideal for a lot of dog breeds but I agree that having a big backyard does not necessarily=responsible dog owner. My 12 year old staffy could probably do ok in an apartment but my 15 week old definitely wouldn't.
