I really let myself down coming back to dol. But there were photos I wanted to share with people. I did that yesterday. No more to say at the moment. Sitting here is just going to make me paranoid about every little thing I type.

'seph has probably gone into hiding now

I just got up and am already tired . Not overly interested in debating use of words or how they come across or what people really meant or whether I wrongly used capitals. Actually Ash, I didn't say that *you* said, it was a general comment. The purist comments and gossip started long before you mentioned it in this thread so you can relax.
-
Capitals is my way of bolding, not yelling
-
I didn't know Jenny had a superiority complex and I didn't know I was a purist - you learn all kinds of stuff via dol
-
Ash, like one of the quotes from "Best in Show" (the movie) youre just going to have to let this one go

Maybe Rubiton is happy with the results she is getting now (and her system) and if it aint broke why fix it?? Having shot horse events before I understand where she is coming from and having seen her work I know its good. Most dog EVENTS I will shoot in jpeg for the simple fact that the file sizes are smaller to deal with and store. Plus the fact that MOST dog people will only want something smallish with minor mods to put on a website, dogzonline profile etc. Jpegs are fine for that. If its a special shoot for ad layouts or art (or where I KNOW more use will be made of the images) then I shoot in both RAW and jpeg.

Given that the questions were: Do you routinely edit images post -camera? How much editing do you do? Do you regularly rely on editing? I don't think the OP is really talking about lab involvement here.
-
Everything I keep/use, I edit. Sometimes that entails just a crop or resize. Graphic design/photo art involves more extensive editing in PS and vector programs. Oh my lord I am not a purist

Why not just download something like Picasa (free and legal and looks pretty good to me) and then you don't have to worry about legalities. http://picasa.google.com.au/ Photoshop is not the only image editing program on the planet. There is also a cut down/cheaper version of Photoshop called Photoshop Elements. eta link

Rip Darling Elliot. Finally, You Can Play With Squiddy Again.
chezzyr replied to ~Shepherd~'s topic in Rainbow Bridge
Thinking of you Chewy and family. RIP Elliot -
Another thought. Not sure if you can still get them but you used to be able to get filters (Cokin etc) that would create different effects - including vignettes/masks, sunsets, star bursts, diffusers etc.
-
Many ways to skin a cat - so they say. Darkened edges or areas could be achieved by vignetting or 'burning'.
-
Sorry not sure how burley is made these days but when my grandparents talked about it I am sure they just used bits of fish, squid and fish guts etc all pretty natural. I have been out on boats and gotten quite close to seals and cormorants etc. Anything over 200mm was overkill then.
-
Well the 70-200 might be ok for the pelagic if they chuck burley And a cheaper lens to replace if you drop it overboard
-
I'd be getting a couple of quotes, get it fixed, keep it on hand to use and then sell when you buy another lens (which probably should have been that 300mm you duffer)
-
Why not just get the broken one fixed and buy yourself some more thinking time. Its Winter. If you are thinking birds, Spring and Summer is the best time Beautiful light, longer days to play with etc. Maybe keep your eyes open for a nice second hand lens?
-
You mean the IS don't you. The non IS ones are pretty cheap in the scheme of things. IS adds to price and weight.
-
Ripley, I would suggest TRY any IS lens before you buy. There was one Canon I tried and the IS induced motion sickness I think with importing you are ok up to $1000.
-
You could get the 70-200 fixed and keep it, its a versatile focal range. You won't need the TC with it if you decide later to get a longer lens for birding.

TLC: what state/area are you in? I must make myself get out there on these cold nights. My niece is studying photography in school now and we promised her we would go and do some night time shoots.
-
I have a feeling I may have put this one on dol before. Love light trails and want to get out and do some more soon.

Good old fashioned home cooked meals! Can we visit you if/when we visit the South Island? I am going to do roast chook this week

Yep, the first shots in the Macro cheat thread I took by holding a 50mm lens in reverse against one of my cameras. Was a pain having to hold the lens up all the time so now I am using an OLD manual lens (50mm/1.8) - an adapter I paid $10 for holds the lens in position. I took the water droplet shots with the new set up.
-
I have been having some fun capturing water droplets in motion. Was very excited to capture a 'crown'. Even rang OH to tell him - he has been intrigued by my 'scientific experiments' lately
