Central Asian and Anatolian are out Now that you have explained your setup better :D I don't think what you're asking for should be too hard to fulfil. Good luck! Thanks Lilli. Another 2 crossed off then -

Breed Recommendations For "fenceless" Guard Dog.
Merrirose replied to Merrirose's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just to clarify the entire property is fenced with 5ft plain wire & rabbit proof mesh though as stated I would like to leave the dog "out" and have it hang around i.e. if Energy Australia/workmen ect come over and leave the gate open (about 200 meters from the house) I would like to know that my dog would stay put though hopefully the dog would bark and the caller wouldn't be game to enter. As we are in Sydney not all people are "gate rule savvy". Likewise I wouldn't want to come home and find the dog down the back corner of the property hanging out with the horses as internal fences are just plain wire. I would keep a larger size dog separate from the house dogs unless supervised as they are very small dogs and I would worry that without supervision they may be injured with rough play ect. Shame I cant put the Chihuahuas out the front or id know if someone were coming from at least a kilometer away . I have a couple of breeds in mind though was looking for fresh ideas or to have what I'm thinking confirmed. I understand that all breeds have individual personality types within them. I understand that the dog would need a lot of time & training with numerous things before even considering leaving them loose without supervision. I am considering an electronic containment system and I am doing research on them currently. I want a dog that just makes a lot of noise and doesn't follow through unless in extreme circumstances. More of an alarm then anything. lol @ the Doberman comment... They are stunning though agreed they wouldn't suit as they can have very selective hearing and an independent mind. Actually geese are not a bad idea at all. They do make a bit of mess though. -
Hi all, Im looking for a breed of dog that will be loyal, be happy to stay around the house on 50 acres and not roam & alert us very loudly to any strangers coming up to the house. I would prefer a dog breed that wont chase stock. We do have a large fenced backyard for the house dogs though that is at the back of the house so would like a dog I can leave "out" when mature and be able to trust to hang around while we are out. Any ideas anyone? Cheers

Training For Ddb In Penrith Area
Merrirose replied to redblazebordeaux's topic in General Dog Discussion
There is show training every thursday night held at the dog complex in Erskine Park. -
Permoxin is a fly spray and also keeps fleas and ticks away. You can also use it straight on the dogs. If you google plants that keep flys away there are a couple and id plant them in Poo Corner.

Have You Ever Disliked Or Hated A Dog?
Merrirose replied to Danielle's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes. I have been around dogs that drive me MAD. Don't know about hate though. One was a Dingo x and was such a sly bitch. You could never catch her doing anything but you knew it was her. -

How To Feed, Fit & Prep A Show Dog
Merrirose replied to Merrirose's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thank you to all who have replied! I've learnt some things already! Very interesting Sandra777 that you prep you dogs slightly differently for a specialty show, It makes sense. LOL @ the image of SkySoaringMagpies Salukis sitting on the couch drinking beer and eating chips if they were allowed. Boxagirl your Sibe looks gorgeous! Id love to try an ET one day though I dont think IM fit enough haha! OsoSwift have you got a pic or can you give me a link that shows the condition you keep your dogs in? I love the fit look. RallyValley Whippets are the breed in question. Crisovar interesting point about different lines fitting up easier than others, had not considered that. I use Tuffrock with my show horses religiously, does anyone use the Tuffrock canine formula? I will drive my breeders MAD with questions Im sure!! I am interested in hearing about other peoples opinions & methods. Thanks again!! -
Will anyone share what they feed their show dogs? Any "must have" supplements you swear by? Do you have a fitting routine or do you let the dog naturally condition itself? How often do you bath/groom for a short haired breed and do you use any type of coat enhancers or conditioners? Do you use a normal parasite control program or worm more frequently when keeping your dog in peak condition? Do you keep a dog in peak condition the whole show season or let it drop off a little and then bring it back up again? Any tips or tricks you can share with me? Thanks in advance.

Showing Neuter With Worn Down Teeth
Merrirose replied to Merrirose's topic in General Dog Discussion
Good point lol. So the consensus is that some judges don't though most judges do check teeth in the DOG neuter classes. -
Im Going To Get Flamed For This.. I Do Feel Really Bad Though..
Merrirose replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
It is my understanding that it is legal to shoot any dog on your property harassing your stock. You have the right to defend your property. I couldn't do it myself though in a situation like that I probably wish I could. I completely understand and regardless of if they were Chihuahuas or Dingoes you had every right to do what you did. -

Geldings have and will always be an important representative of breeds, as many people dont or cant manage a Stallion or a Mare, for obvious reasons the geldings should be assessed in the same way as an entire male or female. If judges are not doing this they just dont get the importance of type and conformation, and the roll of Geldings in the horse world. I always check mouths, and all my friends who judge always check mouths, in led breed classes and open led, we are supposed to be looking for the best be it Mare, Stallion and Gelding. And yes I had a Gelding that went BIS over Stallions and Mares at a Breed feature show. I think it is a shame that at some breed/ag shows the gelding is not eligible for supreme of show because they are not breeding stock therefore should take the title off the breeders. Congrats on your BIS! Quite interesting what the other breeds/judges do. Enjoy hearing different POV's. -

Showing Neuter With Worn Down Teeth
Merrirose replied to Merrirose's topic in General Dog Discussion
Isnt that interesting. I went back to our breed rule book which says in regards to Halter classes "All mares and stallions shall be examined for parrot mouth." hence geldings are not. We dont check any teeth in ridden classes either. Also have never had teeth checked at an Ag show in our breed classes either. -
Why Do You Like The Kinds Of Dogs You Do?
Merrirose replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
I love Whippets. Mine is always up for a sleep or a walk or a run or a car drive ect. Whatever you do she is happy to do too. She is also so sleek and graceful. Ive just purchased Whippet no. 2. I cant believe it took me so long to find this amazing breed. -

I show at National level and I havn't seen an Australian or overseas judge check a geldings teeth. Im curious as to what you would consider a real show? Amused at the condescending tone of your post or am I reading too much into it? -
I read in an obedience book once that the author used set mouse traps (spikes removed) on the lounge. Reckons they only ever jumped up once. She bred and showed German Shepards. Id be a little ahhhh hesitant to try this one lol.

Showing Neuter With Worn Down Teeth
Merrirose replied to Merrirose's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thank you for your replies! Perhaps I should just see how I go. Its only for experience and a bit of fun before I choose show pup -
Anyone know how you would go showing an open neuter who has worn down all their front teeth between their canines? You can still see the tooth base in the gum. I know with horses they dont check teeth in the "neuter" classes as they are not breeding animals therefore it doesn't matter. Thanks in advance.
