Agility Training Talk Thread
**Super_Dogs** replied to Vickie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This is our problem too! Though even if I walk her into the entry she still seems unsure of what to do and will pop out. Maybe it is the colour then? My girls also pops out. While she is weaving I can see on her face she is just not sure. It is really frustraing as at home she is doing so great! I would love to hear anything you try and how it goes. I am going to try painting the poles white - it can't hurt to try Latter this year I am going to buy weaves with a metal base. I personally find weaves it what I need the most practice. -

They are straight (I am guessing mine are the same as Aussielover's). The plastic base does give more than metal base, so I have noticed she is alittle slower than at home. I am pretty sure the spacing is right. But I am problem with her entry, like she is not recognising they are weaves. At home her entries are great, from all angles and distances. At training I have to walk her into the entry. Could it be the colour? I am seriously consider buying a can of white spary paint -

I am having the exact same problem with weaving. At home she is fantastic! We have been working really hard on weaves as this has been her weakest point in competions. However at training it is a different storey. She will run straight past them or pop out. I am thinking it may have something to do with me. At home I am more confident and am at a distance and run to the end before her. At training I am babysitter her alot more. My weaves are also blue and yellow (the ones with the platic base that fold up). So I too am wondering it the colour has anything to do with it. Could it be she is not recognising it is the weaves? Maybe I should spary paint them white? Kavik - that is also a good point about them moving, as the plastic base ones are not as rigid as the ones at training with the metal base. -
I got mine at agilityclick.com

If She also has a DVD called Crate Games which we did do, and it has been great for building value for her crate. No more sooking (almost) and no more barking to get out. Also recommend this DVD by Susan Garrett. It is only about $35. Crate training needs to be done properly so you build value for the crate and you pup likes being in the crate. This DVD will teach you exactly how to do this

Do you know much about the PetPlan waiting period? I have read the product discolsure statement and from what I can read nothing is covered in the first 21 days - within the waiting period. It this right? I would call and check with them, but they are not open. I know with medibank there is only a waiting period for illness. However their accident cover is very specific. My dog went to the vet yesterday .........and day 21 of the Petplan Policy is this Sunday. Just my luck

Waiting For A Puppy This Thread Is For You
**Super_Dogs** replied to jess live die's topic in Puppy Chat
If you're doing this, just be careful and make sure you have a contract that details what is going to happen, will you get stud fees if the breeder lets other breeders use your boy? etc etc Once he has been used at stud will his ownership be transferred into your name? Just be careful, Co ownership is usually very very good, and allows people to get quality dogs they otherwise would not. Buut I have had a few friends badly burned in these instances, so just have a good think. If you're not confident with an entire male, maybe look elsewhere, there's no shame in doing that. I agree. Maybe you could ask in the GSD thread about the differences between entire and desexed males? If you are not feeling confident, I would be looking elswhere. It may mean you have to wait alittle longer - but it is best not to rush into these things. -
Face Swollen - Likely To Be An Allergic Reaction
**Super_Dogs** replied to **Super_Dogs**'s topic in General Dog Discussion
The vet gave me some extra tablets to give Ruby in the event it happens again. I also now have antihistamines in my car. But if it happens again, she will still be taken to the vets as this second sting took forever to go down and needed 2 injections, and tablets the following day when she was still puffy. I heard the more it happens, the more severe each reaction becomes So I won't be mucking around, tablets in my girl and straight to the vet!! The vet is going to give me some tablets when I pick up my pup today in case in happens again. :D But if it is really bad, like the other time this happen earlier this year when my dogs was vomitting, I will still be heading to the vet. -

I did the same thing when it happend to my other dog earlier this year. I noticed she kept moving and scatching, so I told her to stop it. She walked away but was still moving and sctratching. I stopped what I was doing to see what was going on - she looked up at me with a completly swollen face! -

Thanks everyone for your emails. Good to know I am not the only one SPS - this is alittle like what Mieka was like this morning when I took. Loopy Lola - My other dog was also puffed up like this when she got bitten earlier this this. Poor thing. Just spoke to the vet and he says it would have been a bee. He is giving me some medication, so I have it on hand if it happens again!!! -
This morning I dropped my 6 month old lab at the vet as her face started swelling up. Firstly her nose (a big lump on the ridge of her nose which is why I noticed) then her eye and then her lip. (You would not believe she was only at the vet Tuesday as she got into some rubbish as was being sick!!!). About 5 months ago another of my dogs (her mum) face swelled up like a balloon and she was vomiting. It was the weekend so I took her to the emergency and they kept her in as she also has an increased heart rate. They think it was likely she was bitten by something. In all my years I have never had this happen and now twice in 6 months!!! My pups face was not as bad as her mums, but I had to go to work today and I did not want to leave her at home by herself in case the swelling increased and her reaction got as extreme as her mums did. Nothing in her diet has changed, and there is nothing new in the yard, so I am guessing this morning when she went out to the toilet she was bitten by something. She sleeps in a crate so she would not have got into anything during the night. Has anyone else had this experience? Do you think it was an insect bite? If it happens again is there something I can give the dogs to avoid the vet visit?

Working Entire Bitches
**Super_Dogs** replied to Staranais's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I still train my bitch (agility) at home. She is alittle flat for about 1 week, but still works for me, but for a few days she is not interested in working at all - so we just head back inside. All she likes to do while in season is sleep :D -
It depends how safe and secure your yard is. My lab pup is 6 months and is still inside and there are areas of my yard I do no consider safe for a young pup. I have been on my OH case from months now to fence off part of the yard. Hopeless
-
8-9 weeks for me. With a large litter it is hard to give the puppies the individual attention they require and want from 8 weeks.
-
That is fantastic I love how much fun the dogs are having!

Aztec Gold you are right that this is tricky. I asked the vet this very question. They told me that although the pup has been vacinated, it is not until the second vacination (and a short period after this) that they can be confident the pup is fully protected. It is best to get your pup to puppy school asap, however you need to be very careful before the second vacination. To help you decide consider where the puppy school is and ask if they site all vacination certificates. Also speak to your vet about if there are any cases or Parvo in the area. My pup (who is now 6 months) I did not take out as the vet had warned me there had been reecent cases of parvo. I always start my pups at puppy school when they are older than 12 weeks. However if you wait you need to do some homework. - Socialise you pup. You need the pup to meet lots of different people and it also helps if you have a friend with a young dog so you can organise play dates. - Teach you dogs basic commands, Sit, down ect. If you are not sure how to do this, try searching the web, or maybe buy a book. Also, please don't stop training your dog at puppy school. So many people do this! I recommend going to a puppy school that is part of an obedience club so you can continue on with basic obedience and then further if you wish. Take you dog to training until they are at least 12 months old. You never know, you many like it and continue on! This little bit of effort, 1 year, is not muchh consider you golden will live for 14 years Good luck!

This is a good read!!
-
I agree - totally depends on how much time you have. Two puppies is ALOT of work!!! I personally would not get another dog until the pup was atleast 12 months old - ideally 2 years.

Just an update. The vet could not feel any obstruction and tighness, so that is good. He could tell her tummy was sore though as she was laying down and stretching out on the vet table. She is going to spend the rest of the day at the vet - just to be safe!! He has given her some tablets (an antibiotic and one to stop th vomitting) and is going to try feeding her latter this afternoon. He think she should be fine :D Will know for sure latter this afternoon.
-
Thanks everyone!! I just did a test - walked to where the dog food is kept and moved the bags around. She did not even bother to get up. he is normally standing at the food whenever I walk near it. So I am calling the vet now.
-
Just saw the other posts. Do you think that she has not been sick again and has been pooing we should still go to the vet for a check? I suppose maybe she has stopped being sick because there is not food left in her tummy??
-
She has had several poos. I would defintly be concerned if she had not. So it has been nearly another 2 hours and she has not been sick again. So I am thinking this is a good sign. Still after any ideas to help her tummy to settle?

Some Sort Of Skin Allergy
**Super_Dogs** replied to Snowysal's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Even though his diet and environment has not changed I would still look at this. Change his diet and look at the plants and grass in your yard. You hear of people developing allergies to things they have always eaten, so there is not reason why this could have happen to dogs.
