If the breeder is on dogzonline they are a registered breeder with their state canine body (in Qld being Dogs Qld). If you see an ad elsewhere and they say they are registered you can just nicely ask them who they are registered with. Also, ANKC website has information about the health tests that a registered breeder must do for all breeds. Some have none. I know cavs do though. Good luck.

Great news Don't worry - I do the same thing.

That is what I thought to. If all comes back fine with the blood test you may want to consider a DNA test to check he is a pure GR. Good luck.

Ignoring is a good start. However this does not work alone as you pup does not know what you want. So the next step is to teach you dog what you want. What I want from my dogs is for them to sit for attention. So if you dog does not know sit yet, you may need to gently push you puppy bottom down into a sit. Ensure you have treats on hand to reward your puppy when he is sitting. This is probably not working as he does not know what this means. Remember, word commands only work when you have trained you dog what you want from that word. If they don't know this you are wasting your breath and also confusing your puppy. Be consistent and you will get there :D

Am I Being A 'control Freak' With My Dog?
**Super_Dogs** replied to Hunny's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
They are not all like that ;) I have worked with many labs around 18 mths who were as steady and mature as anyone could want :) I agree they are not all like that. My girl now 3.5 years old has always been a calm dog, since she was a young puppy. My current pup is not too silly and will have settled by the time she is 18 months old. I do hear stories though of some labs taking years to settle. -

Hunny - I hear you. My yougest lab is exactly the same age. Yes alot of it is still "puppy". My girl is a really bad chewer and takes things off benches. She cannot be trusted alone. As someone else mentioned you need to help her succeed so while she is in this stage don't leave things lying around for her to take. I would suggest you teach her "Leave it". Then when you can see her going to pick something up she should not you can use this command. This had really worked for me. It sounds like your puppy is testing you to work out if she really needs to listen ;) . Stick to your guns. We went through this stage not long ago (and still are to come extent). You should see the look on my pups face when she realises she is not going to get what she wants - not happy. However I do explain to her nicely "you must do what I say" Another thing to remember is labs can be silly and jumpy. When I get home from work my girl jumps around however she knows I will not talk to her until she is sitting calmly. So sometimes when I get home I do not pat her for 5 or 10 minutes. -
I recall one of my puppies having a similar reaction to the vaccination.

No. My last litter of labs was 9. There where a couple of pups smaller than the others, but only marginally. IMO your pup is more like a third the weight he should be - not half! I was thinking the same thing because of his face. greyseas - When you picked him up where there other pups? How much smaller was he than the other pups?

Just Swallows Doesn't Chew

Good idea -
Thanks everyone. It is even better this afternoon. I brought some bentadine ointment this afternoon and she let me put it on her sore nail with no fuss. She also ran across the yard full pace to bark at the neigbours dogs. So it must not be hurting too much.

I would not worry if your dog is keeping the food down. My youngest dog was eating so quickly she would bring her food up. I was getting very worried. She is now eating from a go slow bowel and it is keeping her food down. I know have 2 of my other dogs eating from a go slow bowel now to. -
Thanks. Yes I have been dyring it. It does not look like the nail is ripped. All I can see is some dried blood underneath one nail. If she was not limping I would not have even noticed a problem with the nail. She only licks it when I put stuff on it, which I am guessing is also a good sign that it is not too bad. Today I think she is getting better. she is not limping as bad, sometimes not limping at all and she will run around (limping while running though). So it must not be hurting too much. I was thinking I would stop at the chemist on the way home and get some different anticeptic and see if it improves tomorrow. She is in season, so I don't want to take her to the vet right now if I don't need to. Has anyone got any recommendations for anticeptic? Cream or powder?

Do you mean 3 monthly? Thanks so much for this website. I have been using Sentinal Spectrum and Inteceptor and every now and then I look at seperate products to see if I can do it cheaper - and it is not. These products will definetly work out cheaper when I do not need to provide flea treatment in winter. I will have to do some sums to see if all seperate with a flea treatment like comfortis is cheaper.

I would recommend a weekend stay to see how they go. I am sure they will be fine, but it will give you peace of mind when you leave them for a whole week. Personally I prefer kennels than a house sitter. IMO the dogs are more stressed at home as they are waiting everyday for you to come home. At the kennel there is so much movement and goings on that they are not waiting therefore they do not experience this stress. My lot stay in a kennel every year as we go overseas every year. I miss them, but I do not worry about their welfare. They have been staying at the same kennel for years and are very well looked after. A few years ago they spent 25 days at the kennel. The owner told me they left my lot in the yard for most of the day.

My bad I wanted to put some anticeptic on it to ensure it does not get infected. As I mentioned she is inside most of the time so it is kept pretty clean. I have noticed today it is better, but I am still worried about infection. I might call the vet and see what they say.

Yesterday my dog has damaged her nail. It only bleed a little bit ( noticed spittle bit on blood on floor). I don't know exactly what she has done. I can see dry blood on one of her front nails underneath where the nail meets her foot. I can tell it is very sore as she is limping. How do I treat this? I have been soaking it in bentadine and she is mostly inside. My concern is infection. Should I bandage it?

I find the most cost effective way is the Sentinal range. Heart and intensinal worm - Inteceptor - and is you also want fleas - Spectrum. Maybe Gus is having a reaction to the the bites. I know my sisters dog breaks out if she is bitten by just 1 mosquito. Your vet may be able to give some suggestions for this? The other thing to consider is it may be sandflies, not mosquitos. Sandflies can get through fly screens. I know if I every get covered in bites it is usually from sand flies.

Crating saved me from a nervous breakdown. When my pup when 11 weeks old she fractured her elbow in 3 places and needed surgery. We tried confining her in a small bathroom and everyday I would stress while I was at work that she would hurt it again. Then my worst fear - we ended up back at emergency. Luckily it was not her elbow, she had damaged her foot from trying to get out the bathroom. But I knew this was not working so So we went for crating. I had been thinking about crating her before this but had not got around to it. Unfortunetly she spend alot of time in her crate for 6 weeks (way more than you would normally leave a pup). So you would think she now hates her crate. No.......she LOVES it! I did a speed version of crate games (could not take the full time as we had not started before the accident) and presto - she loved the crate.
-
I agree there are fads - but this is the case with everything! In the business world they just make a new catchy name :D . However I think in dog training these are not just fads - there have been have real improvements to training methods. IMO crate training is only good when the puppy/dog if trained properly.

Puppy Farmers Advertising As "registered Breeders"
**Super_Dogs** replied to toy*dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree. General Joe Blow will not ask any questions if they read "registered". I have also heard stories of so call registered breeders making up stories as to why they cannot sell their puppies with papers. -
Totally agree with this! I have experienced this with my recent pup. Also training is alot more fun as your dog is having fun.

Puppy Farmers Advertising As "registered Breeders"
**Super_Dogs** replied to toy*dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Steve, are there other pure breed registries in Australia? Or are you referring to the "self registry" of Designer Breeds and peoples affiliations with other groups that they may be 'registered" members with? I would also like to know this. I am guessing that these other types of registration are not recignised by the ANKC for showing, breeding and the like?
