Both desexed I would envisage. I started off breeding horses, because I had admired a certain stallion for awhile, and when I had a super special mare who I thought so highly of I approached the stallion's owners. At this stage I only ever was interested in this particular mating (a colonial bred stallion, over a hugely successful USA linage mare - and not a drop of Northern Dancer blood!), and not getting into breeding. I didn't want to go register and have a brand made. So the stallion owners let me put the resulting colt on their books, with their brand. I raised the colt, did everything associated, but for registration purposes the stallion owners allowed me to use their books. And..........after all that I got the breeding bug! My experience with horses is what led me to asking the question here.

Yes guys, I'm out at her place tomorrow and fully intend on asking her. I was only just asking the question from a regulatory point of view and 'commonly practiced' point of view. Its not in my set plans to do this.... I had just got wondering, as I spoke to her this afternoon and she said this pup is turning out to be something special. I will ask for all her help, and would entrust her with the line selection etc if she didnt have a suitable male. Im suspecting she would love to have this option (educate me..thats called breeders terms?) All the BAER testing Im fine with, and xrays (not that Im worried about cost, but I do work within a vet clinic). Just circumstances got me wondering....my landlord is more than happy with me having one dog, but said they'd prefer if it was kept to just one. Pending my partners business and my line of work coming to fruition then we will be able to get our dream house in about 18 months to 2 years. So no 2nd dog till then (dont plan on moving anytime soon)......hence why I just got wondering! I havent renewed my Dogs NSW membership since I stopped trialling my old dogs, but am intending on renewing ,and showing/trialling this girl. I'm not a newbie to dogs, but I have never really paid attention to the breeding side of things. I understand peoples concern, and maybe I should have clarified my position and my simple curiosity.

Given the lack of accuracy that results have shown, I'd be saving my money. After I posted that I properly read all the limitations of the service...and it can only tell if the crossbred has come from 2 purebred dogs... not as good as I first thought I suppose you could reverse it and ask to see that there isn't any APBT genes present, without an exact answer as to what your dog is

Just my experience with dealing with line bred horses. But I am keen to hear about it in the dog world. I suppose my current thinking on line breeding is also swayed by working with a couple of scientists who are also not keen on it. While I work within a vet clinic, Im in a laboratory. We are actually working with some new and exciting treatments for cancer, DCM, CHF, Atopic Dermatitis and OA. Remember that cancer drug that was featured on A Current Affair.... well we are about to run the Stage 2 trials for it in NSW unbelieveable, the tumours just die and fall off within a week. I understand everyone thinking Im on the verge of doing this but Im simply asking the question and I am experienced with the breed. Again..... Im just asking if this is something that happens..... it happens quite often with some breeds of horses. Im just wondering into the future thats all, and asking a question to the experts. I like to have 2 dogs, and I like them to be of opposite sex. The breeder has given this new bitch full registration, because she is of excellent quality and worthy of breeding. As I said, Im not looking to mass produce puppies, Im also not into bringing in a whole litter of unwanted, non pedigree puppies. I will cover her with a worthy stud to produce a whole litter of quality puppies. I'd go back to the breeder of this bitch, however Im not a fan of line breeding (whilst not experienced in the do's and dont's of the dog breeding community, I am experienced in horse breeding) and yes, I will be asking her advice. Plese don't think that Im asking this question because I just want to see a whole litter of cute puppies running around my house. Im just not ofay with the written and unwritten protocols of the dog breeding world.... hence why I am asking the question. If it isn't a possibility, then I will happily get a male puppy.

Im thinking way in advance, however here goes - Is this something breeders can or maybe would do in general. I am getting a bitch and when she is ready to have a litter I would love to breed her, primarily to keep a male for myself. I have no interest in becoming a breeder, so dont really want to go through the process of becoming a registered breeder. Does it occur where the prefix of the dogs kennel is used for the paperwork. Even if it meant myself leasing the bitch to the stud for the period of the whelp? Im not looking for financial gain, the owners of the dog could even keep any of the puppies if they so wished. I might be really off track here, I just would really like to produce 1 litter of pedigree puppies, to enable me to keep one. LOL, I would rather you guys 'Tell her she's dreamin' instead of phoning people with a potentially silly question.

He may not be a bad breeder at all, but there is a question mark. It is possible to identify resource guarding in pups when they are very young. Was it a well-bred litter? Did the breeder miss the signs of strong resource guarding in the pup and place it with an unsuspecting family? Or was the dog only ever a mild resource guarder, and its behaviour escalated because of family management? I have done a fair bit of behaviour work, and seen quite a few resource guarders (labs, rotties, cockers - a real variety). Particularly with dogs who display it very early, I got majority of these owners to ring the breeders and ask if the pups were fed from one large bowl, and in the majority of cases the pups were. From that it's a very early lesson where the puppy learns to control the situation around it, and that resources can be limited and their value increases. In maturing dogs (7 months +) I found it was a dominance issue, and compounded by the reaction of the owner the first time the dog experimented with the behaviour... 'look, when I show aggression, they back away'. Whilst Ceasar Milan would confront the dog, and thats fine for him or anyone who is strong during confrontation, I'd rather instruct my clients to re condition the dog to something else - like a trade for food. One young Rottie would chase you to bite if anyone went within 2m of his bowl. So we started trading sausage fresh out of the microwave for the bowl. Now he just assumes when people go near his dinner its for a trade up. Not perfect, and I would never say he is 'safe' but at least 95% of the time he is, as long as the owners keep up the reinforcing. I heard 3 years on from seeing him, he still leaves his dinner in hope of a trade up

Completely agree (especially with my fav breed - ACD's), whilst training can alter many behaviours, why start off with an undesirable personality. The breeder of my new puppy has selected for temperment for generations ACD's as friendly to strangers as Labs

Was it the RSPCA he was taken to? Wouldn't a ranger take him to the pound that they take all their dogs to? I work near the Kogarah pound at Carlton, and I just cant believe those girls in there woiuld PTS a dog within 24 hrs of it being brought in. Even dogs who have mauled kids get more time than that! So sad, and something has gone very very wrong. I know this is sensationalising your loss, but if you dont take legal action maybe tell your story to the media. Make some rangers think twice about ever doing this again. Dog owners shouldnt always be painted as the villians.

How exciting!! I just picked out my blue ACD girl, but she doesnt come home until the 12th Feb. The sire was all over us, kisses and cuddles to total strangers. The mother was incredibly sweet. Photos asap!

I love my Aust Cattle Dogs They are robust enough to do anything with me. Swimming, horse riding, hiking. Innate knowledge about dangers such as snakes. They can look after themselves. Could cross a busy road with me on horseback and them following. Smart enough to learn anything thrown at them, smart enough to perceive the world around them. Both mine could and have walked with me offleash through the city (bad I know- even worse when one was congentially deaf ) Enough drive to teach them anything, but not so much like other working breeds. It can be switched off - no ball at my feet 24/7 Sensitive enough to only need small corrections during training, sensitive enough to respond to my moods. Big furry cuddles if I was down. The knowledge that they had my back. They had each others as well, with my male often moving my female out of harms way because of her deafness. No phobias! No dramas with thunderstorms, fireworks..... no whinging and crying, no panicking if left by themselves. Social enough to take to BBQ's, to a crowded beach, agility trials. Loyal as loyal can be, these were the dogs that would stay with you in a crisis. And most importantly I never felt like I owned these dogs, they had enough spunk to stand up for themselves. I truly felt like these guys were my friends and it was a 2 way relationship. I know ACD's can get a bad rap, but wow, when given boundaries and leadership they are such allrounders. Confident enough that a dominant larger dog would think twice about starting something, securely confident enough that they didnt have to constantly display their social rank at the dog park. Sigh...... I'd give anything to have made them immortal...

Good, hopefully common sense prevailed. Channel 9 mentioned about 30min ago that they were not accepting pets, and the reporter was a little lost for words

with all the road closures I doubt people will have the choice of what evacuation place they have to attend.....its riduculous! the Brisbane evacuation center is where they have the Ekka...plenty of stables to put animals

I think we are a long way from that.... the Brisbane evacuation area at the RNA ISN'T taking pets ;)

Hi I worked for a big animal pharma company and they produced all the Exelpet products under licence. Same manufacturing process, same quality ingredients as listed on the packet. Its the marketing costs and the route to market the product takes that pushes up the price (maunfacturer to supermarket vs manufacturer to wholesaler to vet to consumer) Its understanding the capabilities of the particular chemicals that should influence purchasing.... eg Febantel vs Fenbendazole for Giardia. If I see the ingredients and the mg/kg are the same as the higher end products I'm happy to use a supermarket brand

Desexing should take some wind out of his very large spinnaker! I'd then address his energy levels - what diet is he on? Then sit your partner down and have a big chat about some serious new rules for the staffy. Call a good behaviour person, his issues are not uncommon, and easily changed. He is just controlling all the situations around him. A good behaviour person can put it all in context, give you the new rules for him, plus how to avoid confrontation with him while the new rules get accepted. So worth the dollars.
