  1. It is confirmed, this latest recall of Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula dry dog food was made at the Meta, Missouri plant not the Gaston, SC plant (where all the other recalls originated). Plus there is another significant piece of information stated in this latest release... The press release for the variety that isn't manufactured in the original recall manufacturing location. http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/another-diamond-product-recalled.html
  2. Many vets are talking about it at the AVA conference, I will try and get a link to what is being spoken about. If not, I will remove that comment. Here is the quote and link to the type of Salmonella that is involved. Lab tests indicated those who fell ill were infected with a rare strain of salmonella Infantis, which was detected Apr. 2 after a routine test of dry dog food revealed contamination, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration conducted a week-long probe and found numerous violations at the South Carolina plant, according to the Christian Science Monitor. “All reasonable precautions are not taken to ensure that production procedures to not contribute contamination from any source,” its report said, noting that the factory’s screening process for possible contaminants wasn’t thorough enough. Other violations: Factory workers were seen handling sensitive equipment with bare hands; there weren't enough hand-washing stations throughout the plant (even in areas where raw meat was being handled); the factory used damaged equipment with holes and cuts, which would make the tools difficult to clean properly. Here's the timeline according to the Monitor: Despite these findings, the company didn't issue a second recall until a week after the inspection was over, involving a single production run of its Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul brand. On April 30, it issued another expansion of the recall, this time involving puppy food. On May 3, the federal government announced it had linked 14 cases of salmonella in adults to Diamond's dog foods. On May 4, Natural Balance Pet Foodsand WellPet LLC, makers of Wellness, announced a recall of their dog foods made at Diamond's plant. From there, the recalls kept coming. People can become sick by handling the tainted pet food or through contact with an animal that has eaten the contaminated food. Experts advise washing hands thoroughly after feeding pets or picking up animals. Also, clean litter boxes daily. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/pets/153150915.html
  3. And now they are saying that both plants have had recalls, so that affects exports to Australia. Apparently it's the salmonella strain that has killed children. In saying the above AQIS heating requirements would kill just about anything anyway!
  4. I will chase up the exact time frame tomorrow, but I'm 99% sure the sample collection was over a few months. Some great behaviour and physio lectures.
  5. A recent study was conducted on the incidence of heartworm in NSW, QLD and SA. The findings were presented at this weeks National AVA conference. I found it interesting that the current infection rate in Australia is now estimated at 0.3% of dogs. 783 pound dogs (with no known history of preventative treatment) were tested and only 2 dogs tested positive. Has the increased use of preventative treatments led to the reduced infection rate, or could it be the drought we have experienced? Only half of Australia's dog population receives preventatives. Certainly, my dogs wont ever see a SR12 injection, but I'm also going to consider only using prevention in summer. Thoughts?
  6. I'm a science educated, motorbike riding, ex horsey chick who gets my nails and hair done regularly, I dont know!!! my whole life is full of contradictions  One weekend I'm camping, the next partying in Darlinghurst. Maybe the ACD's are my perfect breed! Really big softies underneath the exterior, but don't suffer fools easily. Get to the point kinda dogs :)
  7. A friend is currently travelling through Uzbekistan and posted this photo on FB Would this be an Anatolian?
  8. Yep, my ACD girl was bought from a breeder who offered to replace the dog or refund. They kept her. The family didnt even realise she was deaf until she was 8 months old, as she had learnt to cue from the family's other dog. She came to me when she was 4 years old as they had to move to the US. So smart and the average person would never have realised she was deaf. She competed in ANKC agility and led an exceptionally normal life. It was made much easier having another dog though, as I mentioned before.
  9. I had a deaf dog, and she was easy to train (which I think can be dependant on breed - some seem to lack a sense of self preservation), however I had an older well trained dog who she took direction from as well. I think having just one deaf dog by itself would be much harder. You would be surprised that it is not that difficult to live with a deaf dog. I did take her on knowing she was deaf. Chat to the breeder :)
  10. My rabbit fur tug toys came in with no problem. Zac's eyes looked like he'd had a hit of some illicit drug when he first sniffed the rabbit fur
  11. I like all breeds - if they are well bred (physically and mentally) and socialised. I've met stunning Rotti's, socially stable Amstaff's, bold SWF's with great nerves. I've also met horrible examples of the more 'accepted' breeds. I love my ACD's but I know what some of them can be like and I don't blame people for being wary
  12. I couldn't breathe through the tears last time I watched it Looks more like a Shiba Inu!
  13. If anyone is channel flicking, this movie is about to start on Foxtel - Universal channel. Beware though, you WILL
  14. Zac took a liking to your hubby at Goulburn....I could see him covered in blue fuzz in the future
  15. Pet Resorts is in Dural. Most likely the Guard Dog Training Centre...not my cup of tea, especially for family pets.
  16. The bird is insane, he will often go into the kennel with the dogs and will join them in the kiddy pool. He is about 4yo and put the dogs in their place when they were only puppies. There is even a modified version of the face bitey game
  17. After washing the dogs and crating them while they dried, my lorikeet decided to climb down from his cage and keep the dogs company...he is one very charismatic(annoying) bird  The dogs are very protective of him and he has free range of the back yard when the dogs are home. He loves grooming them and licking the wetness off their noses A bit of preening for Zac Preening Zac's ruff Going for the nose!
  18. Call Newtown Vet Clinic's Dr Jack Ayerbe (Geelong)and see if they are still using EBC 46. I saw many dogs and cats treated with this, on inoperable tumors due to their location. The drug is injected around the tumors, killing the cancer cells. Its especially useful on lower leg or face tumors. Worth a phone call.
  19. No, even in the human trials when they 'blew' the knee the joint settled down after a few days. No long term damage. The knee joints seemed to 'lock' for a few days until the joint stablized the appropriate fluid levels. The humans still received the benefits of the stem cells. If you are concerned about an infection, call your vet and see if they will prescribe her some antibiotics tomorrow. Better to get started on them if that is the problem. Some vets send all dogs home on a course of Amoxicillin as standard practice, while others don't. Doesn't mean it's bad that some don't, we just leave it up to the vet to decide each individual case. Different joints, amounts, prep etc etc. Good to hear the elbow is shaved :)
  20. There could be a minimal chance of infection, the cells are delivered into the joint so vets are advised to sterile prep the joint before injecting. This includes full clip and scrub. Is the area shaved? The cells themselves are screened and have no nastie's lurking. Also, use of NSAID's like Rimadyl and Metacam are not encouraged, so it could just be the joint has flared up in response to the injection. Using some Anti inflammatory's to see if she gets better isn't the end of the world, and by now the cells would have been attracted to the chemotastic signalling from her elbow. Lastly, depending on the size of the dog the joint might have 'over filled' with the cells and just needs a few days to settle down. They have done this in humans. Imagine the joint capsules being an enclosed space, so there is only much fluid it can take. Good you have booked into the vet just to make sure. A course of antibiotics wouldn't hurt.
  21. I'm going to miss the first day! Can't wait to give this a go with my girl. I have to make sure she jumps into the pool at home length ways, otherwise she risks face planting the pool wall on the other side. She will be a natural :-)
  22. Are you guys not worried about acrylamide with the use of potato's in these grain free dry foods? I can't post a link on my phone, but read up on carb's cooked over a certain temp, particularly potato.
  23. Sitting there letting the general public pat a red ACD bitch, I lost count of the 'OMG they have dingo's here!'
  24. I think back to my horsey days and I'd never expect a showjumper, or race horse to perform at peak effort with zero glycogen stored. I wonder if dogs also suffer reduced mental clarity when running on empty, I know I do. Put yourself into ketosis then try a crossword or other mental challenge. I feel like my IQ has been halved, I also become an intolerant cow! Lol. I don't manipulate my dogs hunger, but I do exploit their palates. Even if they are stuffed full with food BBQ still gets the same results. The overall condition of the dog I think influences food drive more than missing a few meals. Fat often equals lazy.
  25. Agree Stormie, to me it seems the OP didn't want to spend the money when the dog needed to go to the specialist center. In her last post the OP states The new cruelty is to treat an animal as stupid and inconvenient – I think many posters fit this description without realising it. to me it seems as though it was an inconvenience for her to spend the money on a specialists opinion. What a hypocrite!!! Edited to add a quote - Did they offer to send Percy to one of the larger after hours hospitals for 24 hour monitoring? Yes, and I feel absolutely sick we didn’t take that option up. To be honest I got the feeling everything was about prolonging charges. I know that sounds callous where a life is concerned, but I distrusted them very much.
