  1. Just a few weeks ago my husband and I came home from a kids' party with one of those party whistles. I blew it a couple of times and our beagle just cocked her head and looked confused. My husband blew it and she flipped out. Hid under the table panting, wouldn't go near him for the next hour or so. Very, very weird. I did think she had a slight limp, so maybe she stepped on something or got a muscle twinge just at the right moment to think the whistle-blowing caused it. That said, she is a massive sook.
  2. I love cheeky, silly, funny dogs like beagles, boxers and french bulldogs. Following closely behind are big placid dogs like Danes and greyhounds. I'm generally not a fan of bull breeds and terriers. That said, we just adopted a sweet, funny, bold little Scottish Terrier X, so if anyone knows there is an exception to any rule, it's me!
  3. One of the most valuable things about growing up with dogs is that it teaches children relatively gentle lessons about mortality and that life must come to an end. I know it sounds morbid, but I will always, always appreciate that the first beloved family members I ever had to mourn were my pets. It made me more understanding and accepting as an adult when I lose members of my human family. There will be tears and confusion, and those tears will come back every now and again when they're feeling fragile. But grief is part of what makes us human and all of us, no matter how young, process it and come out the other side. All the best, and I'm sorry for your loss.
  4. Thanks for the advice, Pockets! I do think they're getting on very well for early days, but we can get a little paranoid about the well-being of our fur babies, so assurance is always greatly appreciated.
  5. Hello all I haven't been here for quite some time, but lurked quite a lot when my husband and I got our first puppy! She is a lovely little beagle coming up on two years old now. How time flies. At the beginning of this year we made the decision to expand the brood, and as I was keen to rescue, started looking around. After about six months of searching, we found a little Scottish Terrier X (approx 12 months old) who seemed like a good fit. We've had Parker for about three weeks now. It's an ongoing adjustment for our spoilt princess Pudding, but she does seem to be enjoying the companionship for the most part! My husband and I are, however, having a few parenting debates, and I was wondering if you guys had any advice. My questions are below. 1) The bedding situation - Pudding has always slept in the laundry in an open-door crate. When Parker first arrived we didn't have space for a crate, so he had a little dog bed, also in the laundry. After a few nights it turned out they were both sleeping in the crate. My husband thinks this is ideal and they can share the crate forever. I think Pudding deserves a little space from the higher energy Parker, and we should get a second crate so they don't have to share. Thoughts? 2) Dominance - They're still trying to sort this one out, though I believe Pudding is dominant. Their play is rough but definitely playful, but I'm concerned that when not playing, Pudding has started mounting and putting her head over Parker's neck and head. Do we let her assert her dominance in these early days, or do we put a swift stop to that behaviour? 3) We will be taking Parker to group training in a few weeks. Should we take Pudding as well? Thanks everyone!

  7. Hey all, I get all my dog's toys from Amazon. Ordered $70 worth the other day (Kongs, Nylabones, treat ball, ZoomGroom, Babble Ball) and postage was under $10. As long as you make sure the toys are being posted from amazon.com and not another shop, postage is usually dirt cheap and for larger orders it's much cheaper than you'll ever find in a shop in Perth.
  8. Erm, I actually admitted earlier on this thread that I saw a smooth collie the other day and asked if it was a greyhound cross. I'm actually not clueless about dogs in general, I'd just never seen one before. I don't go to dog shows.
  9. Aw, Mason, so sorry to hear. Sounds like the best thing, for sure, but so sad.
  10. The Hound of the Baskervilles is a Sherlock Holmes tale, and from memory (I'm sure Google or DOL will correct me) the dog had a wicked howl... (and ended up killing much of the cast...) It's likely in one of the screen adaptations of the book, a beagle was used as the "hound" Ah ha, I always assumed the Hound of the Baskervilles was a very big dog, but if it's about the howl, then Pudding is turning into an excellent candidate!
  11. I can second Subiaco vet, my parents used to take their dog there, and they were lovely.
  12. Pudding - Pudding Poopypants, Pudding Postlethwaite, Puddy Patoodie, Princess Pudding. Pretty standard silly names!
  13. I have to admit, I asked a smooth haired collie owner the other day if he had a greyhound cross. I'd never seen a smooth haired collie before, and hadn't seen a rough collie in so long, I had forgotten how tall they are!
  14. An old man once said my beagle puppy was "like hound of the Baskervilles". I think he meant like a Basset Hound....
  15. Gorgeous photo. So sad. Looks just like my first dog too. I'm a tragic for these sorts of stories though. I cried when I visited the Hachiko statue in Tokyo! ;)
  16. Oh yeah, fundraiser. ;) Seriously though, I hope your friend's property is OK.
  17. He's definitely got a lot of adorable in him!
  18. I experienced this down at the park the other day. I was walking my beagle puppy and a man with a Jack Russell approached. The man was totally enamoured by the puppy and crouched down to give her a pat. The JR, which had previously been sniffing around minding it's own business, bolted up to my dog and snarled and snapped at her. My girl is pretty new to this whole "other dogs" thing, and was so scared she put her tail between her legs and cowered next to me. The owner of the JR patted his dog and went "Oh, you're just jealous, aren't you?" and then went to pat my dog again. The same thing happened. The guy did not care at all, and would have just let it keep happening if I hadn't said we had to go. I would be mortified if my dog acted like that, and I can only assume he didn't take the behaviour seriously because his dog is small and "can't really hurt anyone". I was annoyed, but mostly just a bit incredulous that this guy didn't seem at all phased about his dog's aggression.
  19. Bahahahahaha! That would be so funny to watch!
  20. Sometimes I think you have to think of trying to educate people not to buy a crossbreed is like telling people they shouldn't drink. There can be all the science in the world to back you up but too many people have seen it work out with no problems way too often. Most people know loads of people with crossbreed dogs who seem fine, most people know loads of people who drink and don't have liver cancer. You are trying to argue with their personal experience of the world.
  21. On that Your First Puppy show everyone hated so much, they went through the top 5 dog names in Australia, and from memory they were all human names. Don't despair, human-named dog owners, you get some pretty strange reactions telling people your dog's name is Pudding as well!
  22. Haha, thanks KTB, I remember reading that thread and thinking "Maybe there's hope for us yet". We're up to 15 weeks and she's been even worse these last couple of weeks because she's discovered that no game is as fun as the one where she bites me until I try and put her in time out, at which point she gets to play chasey and the hand-snapping game. :D The worst thing is it often comes out of NOWHERE. We'll be sitting quietly and all of a sudden she will just start flailing about doing her shark attack. We'll be training and all of a sudden she will get a treat and then SNAP! shark attack! Some days I get so upset and frustrated because I can't have any fun with her, I spend the whole time trying not to get hurt. But we will keep trying to train it out of her (and secretly hoping she grows out of it). I have these words of encouragement for you, fellow bitey puppy/shark owners: Of all the pleas for help I have read from other scabby, bruised and bullied bitey puppy/shark owners, all of them have ended in relieved cries of "Thank god, it's over! Peace at last!" I hope to join their ranks soon!
  23. Hahaha, I thought that sounded a bit harsh!
  24. Our puppy is going through this badly at the moment, only it's not with kids, it's with me! She seems to have perfected the art of nipping me too so it really hurts (my legs are currently covered in bruises). Because it's quite painful, ignoring her is not only an option. Reprimanding her verbally isn't working, so we thought we'd give removing her a go. Only turning around to grab her is the beginning of a game of chasey. It's getting really, really frustrating! Thankfully she's got her first training class tomorrow so we can start teaching her some bloody manners!
  25. Haha, my puppy's favourite toys are also scrunched up paper and toilet rolls! She is quite partial to 1.5L plastic soft drink bottles too!
