Just a few weeks ago my husband and I came home from a kids' party with one of those party whistles. I blew it a couple of times and our beagle just cocked her head and looked confused. My husband blew it and she flipped out. Hid under the table panting, wouldn't go near him for the next hour or so. Very, very weird. I did think she had a slight limp, so maybe she stepped on something or got a muscle twinge just at the right moment to think the whistle-blowing caused it. That said, she is a massive sook.

I love cheeky, silly, funny dogs like beagles, boxers and french bulldogs. Following closely behind are big placid dogs like Danes and greyhounds. I'm generally not a fan of bull breeds and terriers. That said, we just adopted a sweet, funny, bold little Scottish Terrier X, so if anyone knows there is an exception to any rule, it's me!

One of the most valuable things about growing up with dogs is that it teaches children relatively gentle lessons about mortality and that life must come to an end. I know it sounds morbid, but I will always, always appreciate that the first beloved family members I ever had to mourn were my pets. It made me more understanding and accepting as an adult when I lose members of my human family. There will be tears and confusion, and those tears will come back every now and again when they're feeling fragile. But grief is part of what makes us human and all of us, no matter how young, process it and come out the other side. All the best, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Thanks for the advice, Pockets! I do think they're getting on very well for early days, but we can get a little paranoid about the well-being of our fur babies, so assurance is always greatly appreciated.

Hello all I haven't been here for quite some time, but lurked quite a lot when my husband and I got our first puppy! She is a lovely little beagle coming up on two years old now. How time flies. At the beginning of this year we made the decision to expand the brood, and as I was keen to rescue, started looking around. After about six months of searching, we found a little Scottish Terrier X (approx 12 months old) who seemed like a good fit. We've had Parker for about three weeks now. It's an ongoing adjustment for our spoilt princess Pudding, but she does seem to be enjoying the companionship for the most part! My husband and I are, however, having a few parenting debates, and I was wondering if you guys had any advice. My questions are below. 1) The bedding situation - Pudding has always slept in the laundry in an open-door crate. When Parker first arrived we didn't have space for a crate, so he had a little dog bed, also in the laundry. After a few nights it turned out they were both sleeping in the crate. My husband thinks this is ideal and they can share the crate forever. I think Pudding deserves a little space from the higher energy Parker, and we should get a second crate so they don't have to share. Thoughts? 2) Dominance - They're still trying to sort this one out, though I believe Pudding is dominant. Their play is rough but definitely playful, but I'm concerned that when not playing, Pudding has started mounting and putting her head over Parker's neck and head. Do we let her assert her dominance in these early days, or do we put a swift stop to that behaviour? 3) We will be taking Parker to group training in a few weeks. Should we take Pudding as well? Hey all, I get all my dog's toys from Amazon. Ordered $70 worth the other day (Kongs, Nylabones, treat ball, ZoomGroom, Babble Ball) and postage was under $10. As long as you make sure the toys are being posted from amazon.com and not another shop, postage is usually dirt cheap and for larger orders it's much cheaper than you'll ever find in a shop in Perth.

Erm, I actually admitted earlier on this thread that I saw a smooth collie the other day and asked if it was a greyhound cross. I'm actually not clueless about dogs in general, I'd just never seen one before. I don't go to dog shows.

Aw, Mason, so sorry to hear. Sounds like the best thing, for sure, but so sad.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a Sherlock Holmes tale, and from memory (I'm sure Google or DOL will correct me) the dog had a wicked howl... (and ended up killing much of the cast...) It's likely in one of the screen adaptations of the book, a beagle was used as the "hound" Ah ha, I always assumed the Hound of the Baskervilles was a very big dog, but if it's about the howl, then Pudding is turning into an excellent candidate!

I can second Subiaco vet, my parents used to take their dog there, and they were lovely.

Pudding - Pudding Poopypants, Pudding Postlethwaite, Puddy Patoodie, Princess Pudding. Pretty standard silly names!

I have to admit, I asked a smooth haired collie owner the other day if he had a greyhound cross. I'd never seen a smooth haired collie before, and hadn't seen a rough collie in so long, I had forgotten how tall they are!

An old man once said my beagle puppy was "like hound of the Baskervilles". I think he meant like a Basset Hound....

Gorgeous photo. So sad. Looks just like my first dog too. I'm a tragic for these sorts of stories though. I cried when I visited the Hachiko statue in Tokyo! ;)
