I would be interested in how many of these registered puppies from registered breeders actually end up in rescue every year? I may have a distorted image in my head but it seems to me it is not the purebreds you usually find in the pounds and rescues across the country?

Inquest Into Death Of Ayen Chol To Examine Council Policies On Identif

I think having an actual photo of the offending dog (as opposed to a random snarling bully-type stock photo) released each time something like this happens would be great. Don't see it happening though. -
Inquest Into Death Of Ayen Chol To Examine Council Policies On Identif
BlackJaq replied to tybrax's topic in In The News
Hm, well I have to admit, I was assuming this: Was what the actual inquest was going to be about. Of course the author of this piece of erm..... rubbish could just be making up their own theory as to what the inquest is investigating. I found these three lines very provocative to begin with, so didn't stop to think that maybe the real intent is different to the one stated here. And yes, the whole breed thing sells. Makes me honestly doubt the average intelligence of the Joe Blows out thee who gobble this crap up like it is Ambrosia... -
Is there any way you can make the balcony accessable to her during the day? When you get home, does she use the pee pad in the kitchen or does she wait for acces to the balcony?

Inquest Into Death Of Ayen Chol To Examine Council Policies On Identif
BlackJaq replied to tybrax's topic in In The News
Hm, yes, my bad, I always expect factual reports and then return to my corner in shame after getting served this kind of fudge >.< That Coroner's report will be a very interesting read and I hope somebody links to it once it is released, because I always seem to miss these things when they happen :p I am also extremely interested in the dog's behaviour after the attack up to its death. Surely it must have been obvious to the owner that the dog was likely to be dangerous if released, so why keep it in such an urban area? This death could most likely have been prevented by sensible decision making by the owner. -
Inquest Into Death Of Ayen Chol To Examine Council Policies On Identif

This was, no doubt, a tragic incident, but should this not say "the alleged pit bull" instead of "the powerful pit bull"? Also, as far as I recall, the owner did nothing to try and stop the dog, other than "call it"...... Nobody who wasn't there can know if the attack was unstoppable. The owner may have been able to pull his dog off the child easily, if he so desired. Who can know, when he didn't even try? This makes me even more angry, that the dog was described as "the powerful pit bull" when it is by no means proven that the dog was, in fact, any "kind of pit bull". If it is unregistered, how do they propse to prove that it is an American Pit Bull Terrier? They do not even seem to be able to correctly name this breed, not to mention determine if an unregistered dog is a memebr of said breed or not. This whole article seems very poorly presented, with emotinal words interjected for greater impact and to me it lacks any kind of professionalism and makes me afraid for any outcome of this "inquest". I can almost guarantee, that more BSL bull will follow, instead of real solutions to the problem of irresponsible, bad owners. If the dog turns out to be a lab x staffy, some kind of mastiff x JRT or some other bizarre mix that may or may not pass a viual inspection as a "pit bull", we will probably either never hear about this again, or the media will ignore it and continue to call the dog a pit bull. Why is this inquest focussing on the breed of the dog, not on the circumstances that it's owner kept it in and how it was allowed to escape? Why is the dog, and not the owner the focus of this whole thing, if not to allow for more BSL to be implemented -
Why Would A Full Grown Dog Attack A Puppy?
BlackJaq replied to Staffyluv's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ah, righto, yes that sounds about right. She is incredibly happy to play with other dogs, loves them all, but is not rude about her excitement, no jumping on people or bowling over other dogs. I can imagine that holding back all the exuberance and her trying to be civilized in case the dog is unfriendly is showing in the hackles popping up, you can tell how hard it is for her to contain the energy. To start with I was pretty shocked at how strongly some people reacted to the hackles, they didn't seem agressive to me at all and she was really careful about all her first meetings, possibly due to bad experiences with unknown dogs in the past. Unfortunately she is not allowed to play with very tiny baby puppies because she categorizes them as "kittens" and pokes them with her (big, heavy) paws, expecting them to have claws and be fiesty like kittens (her kitten "Eddie" taught her well lol). This is obviously not an appropriate way to deal with very young dogs at all so she is only allowed to play with them once they get older and she recognizes them as dogs, not cats lol -
Why Would A Full Grown Dog Attack A Puppy?
BlackJaq replied to Staffyluv's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was just reading someone's comment about a friendly dog greeting stragers with his hackles up and such... My dog does that, too! She has met several nasty dogs whose owners were convinced they would "be fine" with her when she was only little, and even though she hasn't become DA or even developed fear agression issues, she does always raise her hackles when meeting a new dog, even whilst wagging and even though, once she has categorized the other dog as "friendly" she will play bow, hackles go down and such, initially the hackles ALWAYS come up. I never really thought about this so much, as she lets them down once friendly interaction starts, but other people seem to become very fearful of the hackles (no lip lifting, growling, or other signs of agression involved, she is very submissive and will roll over right away in submission if the other dog becomes pushy, will turn her face away with the "submissive"-face on, hold her ears in the submissive pose etc). I have to say, those people who freak out at the hackles are generally pretty un-versed with dogs, but it seems that to them, an attack appears imminent... Despite anything I say and even though Foxy will play without incident after the initial meeting. So what is the go with the hackles? -
I seem to talk to my dog so much she actually has quite the vocabulary.... Next to ordinary things like "Cookies" (Woolies homebrand wholemeal dog biscuits I buy, with the Weimaraner on them, because they have a picture of her dad on them, yes, it is actually her real dad lol), "Ride in the Car", "dinner time", "go for a wee", "have a drinkie" (yes, I call it drinkie haha), she also knows random stuff like "dam" (she will go all the way to the dam if you say "dam" and then don't stop her), "ponies" (she will want to go outside and go to where the horses are, aka go for a run with me on the horse), she knows about "chickens" (will run to chook pen madly anticipating the release of the chooks lol they flap and make cool noises!), "fan" (she has her own fan and will poke it to make me turn it on, if I say "fan" she will go sit in front of it if she is hot) and she knows the names of several toys, for example our duck dummy is called "duckington" and she will go get him if you ask for him... Apparently I have a constant monologue going and she is so clever, she rememebers the names of things she likes. I've also been saying stuff like "get me a beer form the fride, will ya" and she will sort of wander off into the kitchen, because that is where I usually go next.... Sadly, she hasn't worked out the whole fridge-thing yet. Or mabe I am luck she has not, that is where I keep her meat after-all haha Oh, and she actually talks back sometimes.. Ever since she was little, she would do noisy yawns and I'd be laughing my head off at them and imitate the noise. She apparently likes to make me laugh because she now does them when I talk to her, and every morning when I first get up and let her out to pee, she will lie on her bed, stick her bum in the air like a play-bow/stretch and yawn loudly which sounds something like "AAAAAAooooooooooH!"... I interpret it to mean "how-aaaaa-yoooooooooooou" Always makes me laugh, so I get a pretty good start every morning

Yes, and all of this will only affect registered breeders anyway, those who usually breed pure bred dogs. Those people who breed their dog of unknown origin every year and sell puppies for $50 a pop will not go through all the registrations and such anyways, they will continue to put up posters at the local supermarket and make a quick buck. Which dogs are the ones being put down in pounds and such most of the time, aynways? The purebreeds with papers or the mixed breeds of unknown origin and sort-of pure bred looking ones without papers? I think this question is easily answered by having a look around the DOL rescue board where dogs in pounds around the country are listed. I don't think a license to breed dogs would be a bad thing in general, but I don't think this is the right way to go about it, and adding extra fees really only stops the small scale breeders, as has been mentioned repeatedly in this thread now. Maybe we should start a contra petition? :p

Ah, that sounds like a good system! My dog pretty much toilet trained herself as well and only had accidents very rarely, usually when I wasn't paying enough attention to her signals! Given the choice, she definately did not want to live in her own mes lol Also I see that there is no mention in this petition about dogs having social contact to other dogs and people or being socialized before sale. How is it that such an important point is simply ignored by these people? And it looks like they are easily going to meet their goal of 10,000 signatures. Are 10,000 enough to possibly prompt the law makers to consider their suggestions?

Just wondering, how do you guys who raise their puppies inside pretty much full time stop all those puppies from constantly having accidents inside? My dog was born in a litter with 11 puppies all up, and when we first brought her home she had to go outside to do her business pretty much every time she played, ate, slept or did anything, really. Imagine having to take each puppy out each time, times by eleven? Lol However, I would also always prefer a pup that was raised with indoor access and family interaction to a pup raised in a fully kennelled environment. Getting a pup, especially an older one, used to being an indoor dog when it had previously lived in a kennel is not always easy, especially concerning toilet training and such.

Tell her that she is putting her own dog/s at risk if she takes a dog with unknown health issues straight from the pound and does not have proper quarantine facilities. Also, if her dog does not get along with the new dog, the foster home/rescue may take it back, without putting it at risk of being pts, wheras if it goes back to the pound, nothing has been gained, except maybe some exciting new vet bills for the two dogs. Ask her if she has somewhere to separate them safely if necessary. A foster home may also let her bring her own dog to meet the "new guy" and see if they get along before taking it home.

I agree that the vets need cracking down on. I have been to all the vet clinics in the immediate townships around where I live on various occasions and not a single one has EVER asked to scan a single one of my dogs. NOT ONE. For all they know, all my dogs could be stolen with the real owner still registered on the chip, or none of my dogs could have chips. Maybe they should actually enforce the laws they already have, before slapping people with an extra bill of $500 and then still not making any inspections or enforcing any of this. I'm sure they will be happy enough to rake in the money any which way! Maybe it should be mandatory for vet clinics to allow inspectors access to animals' files to be sure EVERY ONE has a chip number recorded? And then somebody actually needs to come along and check this of course.

People Breeding Dogs With Papered Pets With 'prefix'

Ah, I was assuming the dog would go onto some sort of desexing contract or maybe even leave the breeders' after spay or neuter, I guess I didn't think that one through -

Well, seeing as I do not breed any kind of poodle my attitude toward that breed doesn't really change anything for that breed. My breed of choice are Weimaraners and I have not yet come across a Weimadoodle..... -

Sorry to be a pain, but is there a link to those new guidelines so that I can have a read? I have to admit, if my breed of choice was any type of poodle and likely to end up pumping out any "doodles" I would not be overly eager to main register, or even let any pups leave my place without being altered first. On the other hand, I might be inclined to completely stop breeding, as no entire dog or bitch of that breed can be totally safe from such a fate unless sold to friends and family (and even this may not be a guarantee) and pups obviously need to be acertain age to be altered. You cannot keep them all indefinately Why is there no legislation in place prohbting the sale of puppies and kittens in pet shops? -

But if nobody sells on main register anymore, how will other people ever acquire a dog to breed from unless they go the no-papers variety, which is surely bad for everyone? ETA - I bought my dog with main registration and she is still entire (about 18 mo), however, I have not shown her. I bought a main reg. bitch because I wanted the option to breed if I ended up with enough time, money and a person to show me the ropes if I wanted to show her (and if she was good enough obviously). I paid full price for a main reg. dog btw. My breeder knew I did not intend to show right away, if at all, and was not going to de-sex for the moment. Does this make them a bad breeder? -
I said people "may try to", how is that wrong information? Are you even reading my posts? ETE How does it help any argument you are trying to make if you obviously either don't read other posts properly or don't comprehend them?

*double post sorry*

I mean that it doesn't really matter to my point if a bitch can have two litters a year or not, and I chose that number at random. I could have said 5 litters, or 8. In my original post I stated that I thought limitations were aimed at targeting people trying to breed two litters are year and disregarding their dog's wellbeing in favor of money. If this is possible or not does not really matter to my point at all, so I do not understand why people are getting hung up on this point?

So that is really beside the point, is it not?
