  1. Well I am glad everything was perfect back in the day and I would like a set of those rose tinted glasses, please :) So what do you think happened to make dogs "bad"? Was it Pitbulls arriving in Oz? *pats on back* :p
  2. Not sure but my adult horse does it to other adult horses.. which is extremely queer, it looks like she is suckling :p
  3. I have to say that I don't hear much about any kind of violent dog attack in my town so I presume that even if things were happening "back then" only the locals would have known since there was no world wide web and even the national media would have been a lot more limited. I often wonder if nowadays, we hear about these things more because they happen more often or just because we have things like the internet on every phone, computer, at home, int he workplace, even at school. Pretty much ANYBODY has access to it and anybody can talk about their experiences when "back in the day" if your dog got killed by the neighbours dog then you and your neighbour would know. And maybe the local authorities, if you made a stink about it. I doubt it would have even been as big an issue as it is now. Dogs fight, oh well, that sort of thing...
  4. OP, if your BIL (SIL? whoever owns the dog) really would be bothered if something happened to the dog then I would carefully and CALMLY explain exactly what could happen. If he doesn't think this could happen to him, ask him to at least have a chat to his vet about the potential risks AND the costs. Don't lather on the emotional language and appeal to his sense of right and wrong and all that crap because he will dismiss anything else you say as well as that. For several years now I have been trying to convince my own OH to neuter his extremely dominant male dog. The dog is bloody 5 years old now and still entire but at least he has never covered a bitch. I bought a pedigree dog myself and OH was all for breeding the two of course :p :p A Mismatch made in heaven, reactive large bully mix x Weimaraner! Can you imagine! He eventually really came to care for my bitch and when I made the decision to spay her it really got him thinking. He was not on board with this at all. He is now experiencing some man issues (kidneys and prostate related) and learning about what his dog may likely go through if not neutered and I think it is playing on his mind, he has been talking about fixing him a bit lately. Sometimes it can be a very long process for somebody to make the decision to not breed and even de-sex their dog. It is frustrating for everyone who "knows better" and knowing them makes it a continuous issue in your life, not just a stupid thing some stranger did. Anyways, point of my post is this: Explain calmly what could happen to his dog, the costs that he will definitely have to bear (I would still dob them in for not chipping and registering the dog if she is not chipped and registered but they don't have to know that you did that) an the costs that COULD arise. All in a practical and calm manner so as to be taken seriously. Get him to look at his dog and imagine if she had a breech puppy stuck halfway while he was out. Ask him what he thinks would happen in that scenario. Say whatever you think may appeal to his common sense and love for the dog, you obviously know the guy better than me! Maybe you can slowly convince him over time, rather than try to overwhelm him in a moment lol
  5. Yes, assuming they didn't chip and register their entire bitch already I would start here. Alert the council to the fact that they are missing out on the exorbitant registration fee of an entire bitch. Once the council are onto them maybe they will do the maths and realize how much chipping + reg alone will cost them as they shouldn't get away with not doing it if the council are aware of what they are doing. Seriously though Sandra, you are making way too much sense here! Can we just skip ahead to cute puppy pictures please? lol
  6. I seem to be an expert at humiliating my dog
  7. Maybe pointing out legal issues may give you some leverage then. I would also shamelessly dob them into the ranger to make sure they get the chipping and vaccinations done. That way they will at least get some financial punishment for being stubborn :p Some people may object to this but I don't care :p :p But let's be honest, almost every Joe Public thinks puppies will sell for money, no matter the breed or cross thereof. The general public are just hopelessly uninformed, right until they get stuck with 10-odd puppies of indeterminable breeding and dump them at their local pound. It happens every day and those people sometimes learn and don't breed again but for every one who learns there will be 20 first time "one off" breeders who have yet to learn that lesson.
  8. I'd say by the sound of them they would not be the kind of people to fork out for worming, vaccinations and chipping on the pups. I say this because if they did all that with their bitch an then timed it by 4 or 5 (whatever number pups they think they might get) they probably wouldn't get all jizzed up over $200 bucks a pup since that probably won't even cover it, especially by the time you buy food and throw out some things that they will pee on and chew to pieces. Hence showing them a list of expenses will make exactly zero impression. Those kind of people do not expect to put ANY money into those pups. They will join the bitch, and wait to see what happens. Any pups they keep alive until sold will be extra cash in their pocket since they have no expenses. I would ask them to come visit a pound or shelter with me, explain how most of those dogs were once one off litters and that most of those dogs will be dead in a week. Probably still won't make an impression but that's about the best thing I can come up with.
  9. Not everybody dies from a heart attack. My Pop had two and he is still alive. If she was mauled after she went down she could still have died of blood loss. However, she may have been attacked first and then had a heart attack, they are still making enquiries into that I believe.
  10. I agree, prison for the owners of dogs involved in these kind of incidents would be a good idea. And mandatory education classes and maybe a ban on owning any dog until they can prove they are competent and educated.
  11. I have heard of dogs turning on frail or elderly members of their own pack and I would never be comfortable with that amount of large dogs in such a small area all unrestrained at feed time, whether I was elderly or not. I think people need some serious education on what dogs are capable of, especially when the person handling them can appear "weak" or there is food involved. I feel awful for everyone involve here.
  12. I am just trying to visualize you holding an Anatolian Shepherd up above your head :p LOL!
  13. It might be stupid but I also step in front of my dog when an unknown loose dog approaches. I will then proceed to give the dog a vocal warning to "git" in a stern tone, then I proceed to charge the dog and will kick if necessary. Several semi-serious dogs have so far reconsidered once I started to advance toward them rather than wait for them to get to me and my dog. Obviously a genuinely aggressive dog might proceed to attack me if I advance on it but I have never considered just letting my dog go or not standing in front of my dog to protect her. Thankfully she generally accepts that I am dealing with the situation and stays behind me rather than reacting to the advancing dogs. I really feel for this lady and her "Lady", it would be awful to go to this extent to try an save your dog and still be powerless to protect it.
  14. Lol I like the sound of that :D Yes, she is awesome but if I start praising the benefits of getting a pound dog or adopting from a rescue here I will probably be preaching to the choir xD
  15. Yes, bull breeds can be more dog reactive but I don't think leaving any unknown foster dog alone with personal dogs is a good idea. I would always kennel/crate/somehow separate a dog I didn't know from my own dogs if I was not there to supervise, bull breed or not. Also, in the last week or so I have seen about 5 litters of "staffies" on my local buy, swap and sell page alone. They are churned out like hot cakes. At the same time I have seen about a dozen or more "staffies" around the 12 m/o mark to give away for free on these same pages and nobody seems interested. Most of the puppies were selling between $50 - $200. Why do people keep breeding them? They can not possibly make money from them and once they get past the cute baby stage nobody wants to take them even for free
  16. Re Responsible Breeders taking back their dogs etc, I actually count contributions to the breed rescue as well. Not everybody can squeeze in more dogs at any given time, that is why there are breed rescues and I find that those breeds which have less dogs on the ground at any given time are more likely to have a good safety net in place. I find that bull breeds are incredibly hard to place, whereas gundogs usually have a breed rescue willing to step up for them. If the breeder can be found they will often have connections to breed rescues, temp/foster homes and so on and just because they cannot take the dog themselves does not mean they just leave it to its fate! Mixed breeds are usually not that well off unless they are visually appealing and members of the public are interested in adopting them. I have to say that I have found dogs that are not that attractive can have a hard time finding somewhere to go...
  17. Lol the best part is that this sheep is not actually hand tame. I can't touch it at all but its cool with the dog! I didn't really need to train her to do anything, she came knowing sit, stay and drop it and house trained as well and she just really likes all the animals. I think she just has a really, really low prey drive (if any). The baby chicks have been wandering between her pen and into the nursery pen (the mesh was a tad too big and they fit for a while ) and she has kept her distance, made no attempts to chase or even touch them, which is great since at that age they can be easily smooshed (we had an incident where my Wei somehow managed to coax my hand tame chick out of the chicken pen, no idea how it got out, probably between the door and the frame?, anyways, she retrieved it, happy as can be, only to discover it was dead when she put it down. She was pretty saddened by this as she has retrieved my rooster twice when I was not paying enough attention and he has been fine each time) She actually walks up to my young gelding and sits in front of him to have her back scratched. He is pretty mouthy at this stage and will lick and chew on her for ages? She seems to enjoy it, too. I think somebody missed out majorly when they didn't claim her from the pound, she is awesome and an all round gentle, loving dog. As long as she gets to hang out with us during the day she seems ok to be on fox guard duty outside at night so I pretty much got the perfect deal here I think. Hahaha! Love the OGD, I might have to make up a sign for the poultry yard that proclaims it protected by the Orange Guardian Dog :D :D :p ETA: I just realized you can't see her tongue in the photos but she was actually licking that sheep until her nose was all sloppy. I was wondering at the time if she was taste-testing that ewe or was just being affectionate... I will let you know how that works out when she is inside the pen lol She is good with kids, too, unlike Foxy. Here she is at a Wiggles themed birthday party (she was wearing a costume to begin with but took it off at tosme stage before the camera came out haha) And this is how she arrived: She definitely came a long way since then!
  18. This is my pound puppy who is not so little any more. She loves all my animals, including chickens, baby chicks, horses and sheep, so I got REALLY lucky with my skinny orange pup! She is going to move in with my chickens shortly, once the chicken fence is made dog proof lol I was considering getting a LGD but seems like that wont be necessary now...
  19. LOL Is that a Weimaraner in the Shapes box? My Wei loves Yoghurt and tends to get her muzzle stuck in the little yoghurt cups. Raspberry is our favourite!
  20. This forum for dog lovers appears to be full of dog haters from what I can see. I hope they go and figure out where that dog came from and how it came to be loose, first and foremost. Then I hope they punish whoever is responsible for it being loose by throwing the book at them. Publicly naming and shaming them would also be a good step in my opinion, so that the neighbours can report them when and if they get a new dog to replace this one. I believe targeting this particular owner will be more likely to prevent future incidents than all the BSL and dog targeting would. This OWNER now has a history. Somebody needs to start managing them and their pet ownership!
  21. I agree, and once the abscess is there, it might not be so easy to get rid of. As I know now first hand :p
  22. I have to say that a nerve has died in one of my own teeth due to trauma (a front tooth to boot) and I agree with Jumbaar. I did nothing with my tooth because I didn't notice to begin with. The nerve died and I got a HUGE abscess in the jaw above the tooth/nerv. I didn't notice until it erupted through my gum and that was painful and I am still battling with it after having a root canal and regular cleaning done. I am going to see a specialist about it soon. My abscess hole is the size of a pea. In my jaw. Seriously. It hurts and continuously re-infects despite root canal and plugs. Hence the specialist. A dead nerve in a tooth does require action to be taken. ETA: I should add that my nerve died over two years before I took any action. Hence some people who have done nothing may not have noticed any issues yet
  23. You know, I have a portable electric fence unit. Its ancient but it works well still. Maybe you could borrow one of those and connect it to a metal fence/gate when you go out and make sure doggies can't touch that gate/fence. Whoever is entering your yard will probably not come back. We had people climbing the fence and attempting to ride my horses back when we lived in town. They also fed them all sorts of crap, including maccas bags full of wrappers, tissues, chips etc The electric fence on the people side of the fence pretty much fixed that. Like.. Over night
  24. I am confused, what dog are you talking about? The neighbours 6 week old puppy needs an operation but is not getting it? And its wearing an electric fence collar? And Tralee stole it and then returned it???
