  2. Emotion aside with race horses being dogged for pet food I would have some concerns regarding drugs in their meat. Bute is being used very routinely on horses as a pain killer and anti-inflammatory and is not allowed EVER in horses for human consumption. There is no withholding period because it never completely leaves the body. This would not be an issue with Brumbies and pet horses that have not received drugs like Bute. I would have some concerns about the potential issues for my dog but would have to ask a veterinarian if there would be an issue for dogs.   6. I get parcels from overseas all the time, mostly from my family in Germany. They usually contain books, food items and lollies and such and over the years we have learnt which ones are ok (powdered herbs & spices in original packaging and such as well as gummy bear type stuff). So this one time, I receive an almost empty parcel (they pretty much always open them and put one of the "this package has been inspected by customs" cards in) with a letter listing the things they took out and why.... Obviously I just said "pheh, destroy it" but never before or since then have we had those exact same items removed? It was wierd, to say the least. My mother and I quietly suspect that the customs officer took the herbs and spices home for themselves ;)

I wasn't trying to be offensive or anything, just pointing out that this is a public forum and it seems to me that many people are quick to condemn anything that is not positive reinforcement :p I honestly think the collars can be a great training tool, especially when you need absolute obedience from your dog at a distance (I am thinking hunting dogs such as HPR and Retrievers here, they cannot put down an injured bird to go chase a healthy one, because the injured one could get away and die a slow, painful death). Their use is banned in NSW, which is where I am at, so I do not usually recommend them. If you are in QLD I believe you are allowed to use them, not sure about the other states. I think the ban on them is actually stupid, since many a sheep dog or cattle dog might be alive today if the collars had been available to deter from nipping/biting stock etc. I think they can be a great training tool when used correctly and I don't believe they are cruel. I would rather use one of them than, say, a citronella collar. I can't imagine getting sprayed in the face with citronella is all that healthy..
  8. Lol I didn't want to recommend the collars as they are illegal in some states and there is usually an outcry over their use but yes, they may be the only option to stop this behaviour if you do not want/are unable to pen one or the other

  10. I see no hope as long as the four dogs are together. They will pack up and hunt/play together. Maybe by training them separately you could get them to ignore birds when on their own but as soon as you add another dog or two to the mix they will go back to it, in my experience, especially since they have already successfully killed now.
  11. Many people around here with small dogs walk them with a big stick or even horse whip. I used to wonder why and asked a lady with a SWF once, and she said she had actually had to beat dogs off her dog with that broom stick repeatedly in the past. I was totally amazed.

I just wanted to say to the person who said 30 mins of extreme ball game would tire out their dog - If I tried that with any of my dogs, they would get so fit within a week that they would not even get puffed anymore. Then they would ask for more and in the meantime have a bunch of extra energy to start scaling the clothes line and eat the clothes... Most dog will want some form of mental stimulation, as well as physical exercise, and that should ideally be distributed over at least 2 walks a day. Of course some dogs may be fine with this, I just would not rely on it when acquiring a puppy that could grow up into either.
  13. I guess nobody would willingly recommend their breed as an outdoor dog, except maybe LGD owners, and even those dogs do not want to be alone but need either human, stock or dog company
  14. I believe they might have to increase the amount of time they are prepared to exercise the dog if they would like to go for one of the large/working dog breeds. What about the toy breeds? Did they specify what size dog they wanted? Not sure about their people-time requirements though
  15. I don't think a Pointer would be that happy outside, either. And they can do a bit of damage when bored and lonely... 30 mins a day walking might also not satisfy them
  16. Yes, I would like to know how they will tell if it is of breed X when they load it? Surely they wouldn't have a clue and even the experts are having issues positively identifying breeds if the dog does not come with paperwork!

I heard about an incident on the radio (perhaps the same one?) where police had to "smash a car window with consent)", because the owner accidentally locked the dog in the car (I assume with the keys in the car lol). People do it to their kids, does not surprise me that they do it to their dogs, too :p

  22. Thanks! Does that mean the course goes for 4 weeks? Or is it day long courses each day for 4 weeks?
