Sounds like a chant at a P.E.T.A rally Which brings us back to an opinion...... does a dog have the right to have a tail or not. If the dogs could have a vote on it, I wonder who they would vote to have blown up? You'd think that would depend on whether they have a history of tail injuries or not? ETA: I'd also think gun dog breed who traditionally only had about a third of their tail docked would be more happy than those breeds who only had a stub left after docking

A Shocking Example Of "training"

WTF? What exactly is the goal of this exercise? -
I don't think the whole big vs small dog debate is helping anyone. Hopefully the owner of the offending dog is found and punished but I sincerely wish everybody kept their assumptions to themselves, that includes the article's breed guesses as well as "the small yap yap had it coming". Can we just agree that this was an unacceptable incident and that everybody needs to control their own dog(s), no matter the size?

Unless there is news that this motion was passed by a majority, by 'will' I think you mean 'may'. No I mean exactly what I typed. At this point in time its all theory BUT if the motion is successful then it will be "Will". There will be no May in it. Under the motion the dog WILL NOT be able to compete. This is disturbing. So if my dog were to harm her tail on a shoot and needed it to be amputated to any degree then she would be ineligible to compete in any ANKC sanctioned event? Obviously the loss of the tail would not affect the dog's ability to work, just a the loss of some toes would not affect it, so I do not understand the need to include all events? Surely conformation events would be the only where the tail would make any difference? Also, inclusion of ALL breeds, even previously undocked ones, you have got to be kidding! Amazing, the impact the show world has on all other aspects of dog ownership! Other countries are at least allowing exceptions to the docking law for genuine working reasons, i.e. in Germany Weimaraners that are destined for working homes may still be docked and since the majority of pedigree Weimaraners are destined for working homes, most of them are still docked. GWP and GSP fare similarly and working bred Vizslas as well so I wonder why there are no such allowances made here? Although I suppose the number of genuine working gun dogs in Australia would have to be minuscule compared to parts of Europe

 I like it. They'd better be herbivores, too, can't have them eating other animals!

Jut to avoid any confusion, when I said "working dogs" I did not necessarily mean any unreg dog on a station that might look like a Kelpie and herds sheep for a living, I meant working lines of pure bred, registered dogs, especially in breeds where there is a large divide between working lines and show/pet lines. As far as I am concerned mandatory de-sexing of most unpapered dogs in pet homes would probably be a good thing, since they have nothing to give to any breed (being unreg and unable to produce reg offspring) and a lot of people really do think their bitch should have at least one litter before spaying, their dog is so speshul and pretty/friendly/whatever it needs to have a bazillion offspring (which will then be FTGH on the local buy, swap and sell page about 6 months later) and so on. A good start would be for all councils to require dogs to be de-sexed before rehoming from the pound if the owner does not claim the animal as this would cut down on eggheads getting random mutts from the pound for their little back yard puppy mill programs :p

Yes, I was thinking along those lines as well behluka. Genuine working dogs should be exempt as well in my opinion. Not everybody breeds dogs purely as pets and some working temperaments may not be suitable as pets. The gene pools for some breeds may become very small very quickly, especially when there are not many working lines to choose from to begin with.

I see no GSP (other than the colour) but then again he may simply have a deformed (roached) back and that would not normally be a part of his natural anatomy. He has a wierd flap of skin under his chin, I honestly cannot say I recognize that shape at all. If he is lazy that may seem to imply some giant breed influence maybe?
-
I doubt it. There is no difference between a registered pure bred dog of breeding quality and a random mixed breed mutt in the mind of non dog people. Even many people who are supposedly dog lovers think that the only difference is that pure bred owners are snobs. I doubt they would have enough knowledge to even consider that registered breeders should be exempt for various reasons. ETA: From what I can see through my daily fb interactions, Jane Public is opposed to anybody breeding any dog while there are still dogs in pounds :p :p :p Joe Public generally believes that he can do whatever he likes with his dogs regardless

There better not be any cats in that test or we can say goodbye to a bunch of breeds, mine included!

I think it is impossible to identify them unless they come with pedigree paperwork, which is why BSL is simply impossible to enforce unless you eradicate any bull breed type dog under say 40 kg. If there were a way, trust me, councils that are rabid with BSL would be all over it, not getting shat all over in court.

Ah yes, Spaniel is probably more likely at that size

A Whopping of Weimaraners

It has awfully long ears for a lab? I am not a lab person so can't actually be sure lol I thought it was a solid GSP!

Literally!!

Wow, that was awesome! I'd try to teach my dogs but I'm too scared they'll miss...

In Kelpies isabella is fawn and liver is called red or brown. These do look isabella- clearly a dilute but they have brown noses- thus bbdd. I assume there are some other intensity genes that have been used as modifiers if they appear different to a fawn Kelpie. ETA- crossing a blue and a fawn would produce blue puppies in the first generation, and then a mix of fawn and blue in litters there after. Yes, looking at the photos I do believe they are bbdd, same colour as Weimaraners.

Yet the dog is still showing signs of being bored. Having the information is one thing, but implementing it is another. I'd assume breeder and breed club would have mentioned how much mental stimulation the dog needs, yet it's not getting it. Minimax, I am loving how you manage to sum up my exact thoughts in so few words. This is exactly what I am trying to convey to you OP, "knowing" and "doing" are two different things. I have seenĀ“the damage a bored Weimaraner can do to a house, I cannot imagine that a Viszla would be that different. I am talking holes chewed through doors and walls and crap sprayed up the walls here..
-
Ok that is good but I think your repeated use of the term "high energy" indicates that you possibly expect her to need a lot more exercise than she really does and mental stimulation may be a little forgotten about. She requires a lot of your energy to be invested into keeping her entertained, especially on a mental level ;) I think you will find her a lot more settled if you tone down her exercise a little and spend more time making her think. Teach her tricks and proper retrieving protocol. Make things interesting by letting her scent her way to her dinner (for example a lamb heart dragged around the yard for a little way and hidden out of sight so she has to work for her dinner, this will introduce her to the basics of tracking AND she is pending some time keeping herself entertained). I can't imagine that obedience will be enough stimulation for her, it is repetitive and can quickly become boring. So if you were told all these thing why are you getting so prickly? Your dog is obviously trying to tell you something if she spends all day barking and your exercise regime seems a little excessive... Would you rather if your dog was suffering separation anxiety instead of boredom? Boredom is easily fixed and she is young and not doing any major damage yet
-
This. If she is a Viszla then you should have been made aware by the breeder that she will need a LOT of stimulation. If she was a WORKING gun dog, she would be doing long and possibly unseen retrieves by now. She would have been taught to come, sit, stay, lie down, stay while you are out of sight, stay while you are doing things within her field of vision, possibly some direction cues and so on. Also all these commands via whistle. Physical exercise is not what she needs right now, the more you run her the more fit she will get and the more she will demand. Your dog seems to be bored sh*tless by the sound of things and you need to start teaching her and demanding more brain exercises from her now before she gets older (and bigger and thinks of things to do other than bark to relieve boredom) :) What activities were you planning on doing with her to replace the full time job of being a gun dog? I do hope your breeder spoke to you about these things
-
"Smokey" is not by any chance Weimaraner colour? This is a dilute version of liver, some call it lilac or isabella and yes, it is very much separate from blue and also fawn, not a cross thereof ETA: http://www.doggenetics.co.uk/dilutes.html Both liver and the dilution gene are recessive so for the dogs to breed true two dogs of this colour are bred together

Yea, let's also bring back the rule where they chop off your hand if you are caught stealing! Welcome to the Medieval Circus!

That was a really interesting article, thank You Aloysha!

Yes, I was wondering why these predominantly white, potentially deaf and blind dogs are referred to as "lethal white" when they do not, in fact, die unless put down. If they had to survive in the wild they would certainly die therefore it is a lethal condition. If that's the critera for 'lethal' then it would apply to pretty much all toy breeds, there are a lot of breeds that couldn't survive in the wild for all sorts of reasons. To me lethal means it dies as a direct result of the condition, failure to survive in the wild would be an indirect consequence and as I pointed out could apply to any number of characteristics so it doesn't make much sense to me to use that terminology. Lol I was just trying to visualize a pug attempting to run down... Well, anything, really.. Or some easily corrected things such as ectropion eye lids which could cause a dog to become blind and die "in the wild" or dogs with bad dentition like bad overbite or underbite... Are these all "lethal" conditions?

You know what they say.. The worst homophobes just don't want to admit to themselves that they have an attraction toward their own sex.... Probably the dog is better off in his new home anyway
