Horses For Courses: Is $400 Phar Lap In The Pal?
BlackJaq replied to Sheridan's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
Putting to sleep and slaughter are hardly the same. I have put to sleep a horse with a bullet at home before and thought that was pretty peaceful. I've also driven a couple of pigs to be slaughtered before and found that a lot less peaceful, I'd rather kill my meat at home any day. And regarding a horse being better off dead if it can't race... Well that is a whole new line of thought.. Better off dead than starving in some hoarders back pasture.. Sure. But better off dead than going on to another career such as jumping, dressage, show hack, pony club mount or general trail buddy.... If you think so then I'm a little worried about your animals when they are no longer able to do what you want them to do... -

Umm what? WTF seems they will never learn??

If your puppy gets overly stimulated I suggest you put a lead on him/her and simply hold them still when they get bitey/aroused. Maybe put your foot on the lead so they cannot go anywhere and keep your hands out of reach. Wait until they settle, then praise in a calm voice. Do not use a high pitched or squeaky voice, avoid anything that might excite them. Once they settle, try again whatever you were doing. This has worked well for me with excitable puppies. If it is an aggression issue I would consult with a behaviourist. Obviously once they reach a certain size this may no longer be an option

When my dog accidentally got a hold of some cabbage soup and had the runs for three days (she did receive vet treatment and went in for fluids over night) I fed her a fair bit of natural yoghurt with psyllium husk for fibre in it to help bulk up her poo and help empty the anal glands. It also eventually helped with the diarrhoea....

Yes it is very normal for them to sleep a lot. Do not try to force her to run or play for more than a few minutes at a time (like 2 or 3 minutes) Also remember to take her out to toilet when she wakes up :)

I think you sound like a very understanding, empathetic breeder and I agree with others who have said maybe offer back purchase price but make it clear that you do not intend on paying for further treatment unless they return the puppy. Good on you for being so understanding, but I suggest you stop worrying about what else you coulda/shoulda/woulda done, if you know what I mean. It sounds like you did all the right things and you sold them a living, breathing creature, not a toaster with lifetime warranty. As someone else said, shit happens sometimes, despite everyone's best efforts. It makes me a little sad that the puppy owner seems to be trying to lay blame on you when you did everything to try and breed as healthy a litter as possible.. sometimes people seem to forget that just because a puppy comes form a registered breeder does not mean they have to be 100% perfect, it just means the breeder is doing everything in their power to try and produce the best litter possible. I hope the puppy owner comes to realize how lucky he is with such a good breeder and I also hope the puppy will receive successful treatment and live a healthy, happy life as others have suggested is well possible with her condition :)

Maybe try posting in the "breeders" section, I am sure there are many other breeders who had to deal with disgruntled owners when a puppy was found to have an issue. They should be able to offer you advice on what your responsibilities and rights are :) ETA: How do they know it has been there "since birth"? Is there an x-ray to prove this claim? And how does he know what the vet said when he wasn't there?
-
If all was found to be fine why did they suspend the contract and remove animals? Wierd
-
Did they end up figuring out what it was? Can they tell if it was a death adder or is it more of a "guessing" type situation? Pretty scary to think they are in that area now?
-
I doubt they'll catch anyone with a description like "white ute"....

There has been no help at all forthcoming for the dogs who are in this pound now and I am wondering if it is because of the assumptions and accusations made in this thread? The pound is full and Nina and Rhonda can not take every single dog in it. The other boofer girl who is suspected to be pregnant especially was in urgent need of spaying, not to mention eventually the pound will simply run out of space and need to start making some room... If this thread really is the cause of how quiet the other thread became all of a sudden then I really do hope everyone is feeling good about their "efforts" -
Geraniums are very poisonous for dogs (and most stock) so make sure they cannot get to them if possible

Horses For Courses: Is $400 Phar Lap In The Pal?
BlackJaq replied to Sheridan's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
I don't find slaughter confronting, we kill our own livestock for meat and will be running cattle and pigs in the future. I also had to put down a horse at our property before (via bullet) and if her meat had not been tainted by a buttload of medication we would have used her for dog meat. As it was, due to the injury that required her to be put to sleep, she had received medication that made her meat unsafe for my dogs to eat and we buried her instead. I am just trying to explain to those people who seem to know nothing about horses, why some people find their slaughter inhumane. ETA: I bet opinions on the humane slaughter of dogs after their "useful" lives are up might be a little different on this forum. Would you send your own animals off to be slaughtered to get a few lousy bucks out of them after they are no longer of use to you? Dogs as well as horses? -
Maybe he would have been better socialized if left with his Mum and siblings longer as you were told when you first got him ;)

There was a registered breeder of collies not long a ago who had people sneak into her property and take deceiving pictures that only showed part of her premises to make thing look worse. She did get council attention eventually and had to make changes but that does not change the fact that her rights of property and privacy were violated. An endless loop of a dog walking one circle was also played to make it appear the dog was walking in circles over and over. Did you miss that story? I'm sure there were more Are you saying that you are only entitled to privacy if somebody trespassing does not find ANYTHING wrong with your property?

Horses hurting themselves on transport has nothing to do with the thickness of their skin. They are prone to getting a scare at noises or sights and thrashing around thoughtlessly in an attempt to escape. -
Belgian Malinois Attacks, Kills 9 Yr Old Girl In Phillipines
BlackJaq replied to Lollipup's topic in In The News
I agree, and under a correct training regime, biting the sleeve is not an act of aggression for the dog, it is a move that is carefully taught and practised and performed to an exact set of rules. Prey drive is an important factor here, not aggression in general. The dog should be under the handler's control at all times and only perform direct orders, not randomly bite anything within reach. This sort of training is way out of most people's reach and so fear aggression and poor nerves is the easiest way for some undesirable dog owners to get their dog to perform what they think is "guarding" or "attack dog" behaviour... -

Have to agree with WoofnHoof, also horses come in a huge variety of sizes and temperaments, the kill stall does not vary, same size for each animal. On a different note, anybody who thinks only race horses and brumbies go to the doggers needs to take a long and hard look at any given auction where cheap horses are sold to doggers. Just like dogs in pounds, horses that go for dog meat come from a huge variety of backgrounds and pretty much all of them have butthead owners who cannot be bothered. Either they cannot be bothered to foot medical bills for their horse, feed their horse, train their horse, look after their horse or sell or responsibly re-home their animal or whatever. Nobody has to dump their horse or dog, and humane euthanasia should always be considered if you know you didn't teach your horse jack-all and nobody is going to want to buy it except the meat man... -
Chicken Carcass Frames How To Feed?
BlackJaq replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes, it is very fatty and definitely enough to be a meal. I would not feed a meal + chicken frame ETA: Chicken necks are also very fatty. Maybe it would be easier for you to go by weight since the serving size obviously determines whether it is a meal or not lol -
I agree that fearfulness in a dog is not a good temperament. I don't really think it is good for any reason. I do find that many people have issues telling a fearful temperament from a confident temperament and also from a temperament that simply holds no value for strangers. Culling fearful dogs, especially in large and powerful breeds and breeds with guarding purposes from breeding programs is very important in my opinion and no allowances should be made for such dogs in regard to breeding. Not wanting to be handled by a stranger is not always fear related though ;)
-
I don't think anybody claimed that they can't? There will always be "softer" and less soft examples of these kind of breeds, but that does not mean that the "sharper" individuals are not correct or all of them are unable to be shown. ETA: And sometimes it does come down to de-sensitizing dogs and training them to be a little more tolerant in a show situation than they would be at home or out and about. That does not necessarily make it a reflection of the dog's true temperament though, it just means the dog has learnt that in this situation, this is what is required I guess.

Chicken Carcass Frames How To Feed?

I bought a bunch of glass containers with plastic lids at the reject shop a few weeks ago and keep all my meat in those now as the glass gets a lot colder than all the plastic wrappers. If your freezer is full I would suggest you also get some glass containers, they are easy to clean and our meat has been lasting a lot longer, not to mention you can neatly stack them in the fridge. They should have those kitchen scissors at woolies and coles if you happen to do your shopping there. Otherwise you can try break them up with your hands but I think that might be a bit messy/gory lol. If you want to be feeding your pup offal and such I would definitely start now as some dogs really don't get into the taste later-on. If she doesn't like something I would skip a meal or two and then offer small pieces of whatever it is, she should gobble them up happily. Eventually you can just give the whole organ. My Weimaraner was not at all fussed on liver and kidneys to begin with but using the above technique she got over it pretty quickly and will take a whole kidney or whatever and eat it now. Still not her fave but oh well
