Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
BlackJaq replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Which one is the first one? xD -
I pay $250 for surgery and $150 per hour on top of that for anaesthesia + pain killers and fluids so I think $350 is a great price for a potentially exploratory surgery lol I would probably wait longer, as somebody else said, a retained testicle won't go cancerous over night and it might yet descend. I know of several monorchid stallions who never had their retained testicles removed and became cancerous after their 8th year or older

Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter

I must have missed those photos, don't think they are still on there now For fairness' sake though, I have to mention that plenty of people post photos of their children and pets interacting, where the pet is clearly uncomfortable and a sticky situation might result if no adult interferes. Many children suck at handling animals (especially if not taught properly) and most adults are not much better and hardly able to correct them.... -
BCNut, in your case I probably would have neutered as well. But if I was happy with the dog's behaviour I probably would not do it just for the heck of it. Both my females are spayed btw, one done after 3 heat cycles and one before release from the pound at about 10 months old. The main reason I had my pure bred bitch spayed was convenience as she is an indoor dog and I did not intend on breeding her (obviously she was the one spayed after 3 cycles, by this point she was about 18 months old, if I were to have my time again I might even leave it longer as my breed matures rather slowly). I would be more reluctant to keep a female entire forever than a male, mostly because of the potential for pyometra as they age

That is about the wishy-washiest answer you could have come up with. Which system do you refer to? Not the government one surely? Since we should not rely on the government to fix our problems? Now you're implying (without definitely saying so of course, so you cannot be called out on your contradictions) that we should play political games to convince the powers that be that what? What exactly are they going to do? Not enforce the existing leash, micro chipping and containment laws, as would be sensible? No? What then?

I would like to ask you this again, Luke GSP. Please give an explanation as to what you think we, as bull breed community, should do? Here you go, I am bumping my post again, for your benefit :)

In my opinion this is a well reasoned argument. Well done. So how do the two of you suggests this is done? I have previously asked this question of Luke GP (three times actually) What do you suggest we do, that is not illegal?

Personally, I have decided to no longer own staffy type bullies, possibly bullies in general, once out current ones go because of the public stigma, mostly. We keep ours well away from the public. It's a shame I find, but the scaremongering against them just makes even a quick walk through town into a big hassle and God help you if they turn toward a passer-by in an attempt to smell them. My dog is perfectly well behaved and friendly with people of all ages and other dogs by the way. My current breed of choice is pretty much invisible to the media and has no stigma that I know of associated with them and my walks with this dog are extremely pleasant and everybody wants to pat this dog instead of crossing the road even though this dog is not interested in meeting strangers (unlike bully girl)... Funny that

I agree. If your dog is being managed responsibly I see no reason why you have to neuter if you do not want to, although it can make management a lot easier obviously, especially if there is more than one dog in the household. If your breeders finds that their line of boys are likely to experience certain cancers due to being entire then I would probably opt to neuter but otherwise I would not see it as a priority just now
-
So what do you suggest, Luke GSP, if we are not to rely on the government for a solution I have even given options to choose from, see my previous post Methinks you have no solution.... Other than "don't expect the government to do anything about it!"

I think the government are failing everybody by insisting on persecuting random pets for their look whilst ignoring people who daily break the laws that actually make sense and failing to enforce said laws. If ANY dog, regardless of breed, is loose, the local council should be required to come get it, rain or shine, night or day and people need to be badgering their councils to actually do this. Why do you think we are paying registration fees? Rates? All those other taxes and fees? Only to find random dogs and cats shitting on our front lawns in the morning? Heck no, we pay so that we have the right to call the council ranger and that guy comes and picks up the roaming animal. Frankly, I don't care if council pound euth rates triple, if it means roaming animals are kept off the street. What exactly is it that you expect me to do? Take my rifle out on walks and shoot any bully that is roaming on sight? Find their owners and bash their heads in? Lecture them? Harass them into controlling their dog? What? The only available (read: LEGAL) option is to notify the authorities. Do you think Joe Bloe BYB bully breeder is going to give a shit if we shun him at dog shows? Or if we whisper about him in dog circles or don't invite him to the neighbourhood bbq? Luke GSP, please explain what you expect us (me) to do? I would love to do it, as long as it doesn't involve me going to jail
-
yeah, but your dog is being attacked - would you seriously just keep walking your dog and letting them get attacked? I assume you don't dogs that aren't good at defending themselves? You don't have to walk your dog to report loose dogs. Just pick up a phone and call council and police. Every time. No dog being walked required.

Is there a link where we can see said photos or have they been removed already -
So you expect the bull breed community to do what no other breed community has been able to do, which is stop BYBs using their chosen breeds or look-alikes? I think it should be up to the government to stop spreading misinformation and start enforcing micro chip, leash and containment laws and most of these attacks wouldn't even be happening, because all dogs would be safely contained or under effective control, which seems to be the number one common factor as far as I can see.

Personally, I wouldn't de-sex him just yet, being a Boxer and a large breed. People have kept male dogs entire for thousands of years and many of them live to a ripe old age, especially with today's improved veterinary care. You can still get issues if your dog is de-sexed and what you save in potential cancers he could make up for in growth related problems. Obviously you should do more research and speak with more people (and not just take advice over the internet lol) until you feel comfortable with whatever decision you make. Have you spoken with your breeder? They would know their lines and since their sire and other studs must have been entires to sire litters they should be able to tell you what, if any, issues they have experienced with their entire males. If they are a good breeder, they should have some knowledge about their dogs for several generations. Also maybe speak to Steve on DOL, she used to breed boxers and is very knowledgeable on these things. I get a little suspicious when a vet only addresses one side of the issue and since your vet does not seem to have mentioned anything about the cons of neutering it may be worth getting a few more opinions.

As far as I'm aware the AmStaff breed was founded when some people decided to take their APBT and write a standard and show them and cease any involvement with dog fighting... So as Hockz said, you can still dual register them (in the US). Not sure why you think one was "introduced" to the other?

Maybe it had Tetanus. Lockjaw is a common symptom (in all mammals)

One can only hope. Is there any way to slap him with a gag order? :p I would consider paying for it out of my own pocket -
Peeing Inside For First Time In 11 Years
BlackJaq replied to White Shepherd mom's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ah, thanks! I only ever had one boy dog and he had been de-sexed very early so I've never even heard of them  -
I think they meant "drop", as in, the command "drop" (to your belly)

Oh my God, he will make anti BSL campaigners look like total retards -
I just ignore inez now, he/she has repeatedly pointed out that he/she is dosed on Endone and clearly not in a healthy state of mind. To be frank I believe it may be best for his/her state of mind to stay away from these topics for a while since he/she continues to write themselves into a state of hysteria each time a topic like this comes up. We might be doing inez a favour by simply ignoring their deranged rantings and once they come back to themselves they may realize that Ednone is addictive and not good for them...... ETA: I also believe it may have been a Neo that attacked him/her but I could be wrong. It is so hard to make sense of their posts, it is easier to just skip them I find.

Yes, I read Buster's story as well. And suddenly, everybody asked "Why". But not "why did he do that" but rather "why would a Golden Retriever do that". I also found the bias appalling.
-
Absolutely and totally true, the owners of these dogs are to blame however, the other side of the coin is if these roaming dogs were not aggressive dogs, the people encountering them may have escaped with a good licking instead which creates the breed factor and let's guess the breed.....Bull breeds again, what can you say in their defence when it's the same type of dog over and over again?? I don't advocate to ban the breed, what needs to be done is investigate who bred this crap and who's got them........the old breeding free for all strikes again......law needs to stop these BYB's and random breedings in the hands of people that haven't a clue how to breed a stable dog fit for community habitation. Here you go, some attacks by non bull breeds. Happy now? Ridgeback: http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2013/06/05/243376_local-news.html Cattle Dogs: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-04-03/dog-attack-victim-27let-down27-by-justice-system/4606616 Great Dane x: http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/16434983/call-for-action-on-dog-attacks/ Rottweiler: http://www.caboolturenews.com.au/news/dog-mauls-five-year-old/1806453/ Great Dane x Mastiff: http://www.coffscoastadvocate.com.au/news/family-pet-killed-by-vicious-dog/1845614/ In my googling, I have discovered that attacks by other breeds are seldomly reported more than once and usually stay in the local news. Bull breed attacks get nation wide attention and often multiple articles are written on the same incident. The BH incident involving cattle dogs has been reported on repeatedly though, mostly because of the piss weak sentence the owner received.
