  1. Why would you even do that... The potential mix of breed traits makes me shiver
  2. I have to wonder what kind of SBT has a head like a crocodile..... But anyways, would be nice to see some sort of investigation into why the dog attacked, especially seeing as the owner thought the attack was out of character... I hope the lady and her dog recover quickly ETA: I would like to know how DD laws are going to stop stuff like this happening or have any impact on these incidents at all except after the fact.. If the dog is not a restricted breed (as here and in Deeon's case) and the dog has never come to notice previously, then how are ANY laws going to prevent this? surely the only thing that could have been done here at all would have been better training and socialization and even then, the same thing could have happened anyway?
  3. I got the same dog as you... didn't look overly impressed at being photographed... lol! T. Hahah it didn't look too happy, no :p I didn't mind this survey actually, I found it interesting what emotions I thought I could see in a picture without knowing the dog. Did it look like this: Or like this?
  4. It has obviously not crossed the minds of the powers that be in the UK that DESPITE their archaic BSL laws, attacks still happen, and quite regularly... Time for a different approach? Probably. Will they actually take the approach proven to work? Nope.
  5. Kinda reminds me of the photo of the shark eating another shark that is caught on a hook.... And people commenting that the shark doing the eating is "just trying to help its baby" They are animals, not people...

  7. Just about to say the same thing. Desexing a non sexually and physically mature dog that you intend to do extreme sports with is not a good idea IMO. This, but I would like to add that with a large breed I wouldn't castrate until after at least 12, probably rather 18 months or older, regardless of whether you will be doing agility or not. We had an entire boy and girl living together for over 18 months and never had any accidents either. still have the male entire (he's my OH's dog and OH cannot bear the thought of loosing the nuts), he's about 7 years old now and never managed to serve a bitch so far.
  8. I hope everybody who said to hang and quarter her at the beginning of the thread watched the video by her son that has now been posted... Quick to judge much? It's easy to make pretty much anyone look bad if you take footage at night after breaking and entering their property and only filming what you like and then editing it to suit. Let's see you find pure bred dogs that do not come from puppy farms when every breeder, no matter how small scale has to have brand new, fully concreted state of the art facilities to even whelp one litter. Who is going to afford that? Will you pay the amount of money for a puppy that it will take to be able to afford to cover those costs?
  9. This. Anybody who actually watched the footage would have noticed that the dog that was walking in circles in its pen was actually on an endless loop. They filmed one lap and then played that several times to make it look like it was going round and round. I don't provide water inside at night btw and am considering removing water from kennels over night this summer after loosing a dog to snake bite and seeing lots of snakes round the place last year. I remember that a relative of the owner made a statement saying the pens were night kennels and she posted photos showing the same pen from the outside. They actually had a dog door that opens onto an outdoor run. Sure, it wasn't pretty but it was clean from what could be seen on the footage. Some pups had torn up some bedding in one kennel but if all dogs had bedding and made a mess then everybody would have had a cry about that. Now there is no mess and people are crying about this. Many dogs sleep just fine on concrete, especially during hot weather. I don't know whether the lady provides bedding in winter or not nd neither does anybody else. AND she was feeding them RAW CHICKEN! OH, THE HORROR :p
  10. Well, I feel for you.... I went to the car wash yesterday and today got what looked like several kg of Maremma fear poop spread all over the ute tray during our trip to the vet for vaccinations.. The dog is new and not used to travelling anywhere.... He did the same thing on that first trip home but I thought maybe it was a one-off.. Apparantly not...
  11. Wow, Santo and Miranda should perhaps get together and write some comprehensive dog husbandry manuals.... Preferably on an island, far from anywhere to stop them hurting anybody else....
  12. Re hunting dog breeders. My eyes were opened a bit recently when I found out that there are some that are importing frozen semen from overseas (such as the US) and doing planned AI breedings to improve their lines - and using repro vets to assist them. Not just a case of throwing any dog together and letting them do their thing in some cases at least. Yep, I only recently found out that the bull arab crowd actually have some serious dog people, I'd only ever experienced the red neck type who keeps a bunch of dogs chained up out back and feeds them once a week. Just recently I have met a couple of guys who actually learnt how to properly train a dog to hunt and who are providing excellent nutrition, exercise regimes and of course vet care.... I felt pretty bad about my prejudiced views , but those kind of guys are still a minority where I live unfortuately
  13. Well, I guess there are a LOT of people studying to become vets.. Unless they start breeding dogs specifically for the learning experience (which I don't think our society now would find acceptable), you'd have to find a lot of dogs giving birth at just the right time, to be able to show all the students.. And it's not exactly something that you can schedule to happen during class... I don't know anything about the uni vet courses, so I have no idea how they would go about organizing this...
  14. I always find chicken parts to be pretty fatty, especially carcasses :)
  15. I feed a lot of chicken necks, wings and carcasses for weight gain, plus sardines or even a shot of veg oil. I would definitely feed more meals a day rather than feeding huge portions. Even three or four meals a day if necessary. Maybe also get a vet check, just in case (with blood tests etc)
  16. This is an interesting topic! We have a lot of BYBs and pig dog breeders who seem to use vet services for their dogs more than I would have thought (I might have been a little judgemental) as well as some pure bred breeders and my vet works lot with stock as well, so they have a lot of experience. I have never bred a litter, so I cannot say how good they are, but I am happy with their other services so far. I have to mention we live pretty rural, things might be different in city practices.
  17. There are plenty of countries where the Fila is not banned or even restricted and they don't seem to have bodies piling up? People can get mixed breed dogs of equal size and aggression right now if they wish, so I don't see a difference, except maybe of price and people can choose to pursue whatever breeding program they like and breeds like this could easily be replicated with what is already here by somebody dedicated enough. And just for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPd2J3HFJxM https://vitaminsforpitbulls.com/pitbull-police-dog-training/ http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=6625698 Western Australia accepts Rottweilers (I forget if you said they were crazy and ucontrollable as well but they are often lumped in with bull breeds) http://www.police.wa.gov.au/Specialistunits/PoliceDogSquad/tabid/1009/Default.aspx Another pit: http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=6625698 Some of Michael Vick's former fighting dogs are now therapy dogs http://www.abc4.com/content/news/special/special_assignment/story/Michael-Vicks-dogs-5-years-later/CACF_ysMe0ShlrdqUQUprg.cspx They certainly don't seem untrainable to me? This is all google page one (except Vick dogs, I put them in here to show that your assertions are ludicrous). I bet if you actually contacted military and police forces around the globe they would tell you about all the different kinds of dogs they use) Here is a vid of a Cane Corso learning protection work and bite work, this breed is legal here btw and its country of origin, Italy, does use them for police work. I would continue but I think your ignorance speaks (or should I say, screams) for itself :)
  18. I started quoting parts of the article to respond but realized "what a load of shit" pretty much covers all of it.
  19. There are plenty of breeds already in this country that are bred to take on a human intruder (or even a runaway slaves, I'm not kidding) and yes, hurt them or kill them, in their country of origin. Up until the bull breed mania hit Europe, my own breed, the Weimaraner had "Mannschärfe" specifically in their breed standard. There are occasionally incidents with these breeds (other breeds just seem to be preferred by the media for exposure) and yet nobody is screaming to have those breeds banned. A Weimarner is plenty capable of killing a child or even an adult and in fact, a boy has been killed by the family Weimaraner in the US. I think concentrating on controlling any breed is pointless because not only is any breed capable of violence and killing, but ignoring some attacks because the dog is a certain breed (i.e. a Lab or Golden) and then reprinting another story over and over, with ever more gory and emotive elaborations because another breed is involved just trains people to be negligent with those supposedly completely non vicious breeds. ANY dog can harm or kill a child or even a vulnerable adult and precautions need to be taken with all dogs. Owners need to learn about dog body language and behaviour to help read their own dog and be able to recognize when this kind of thing is about to happen (or when their dog is feeling cornered by their toddler and about to lash out or when their cousin's dog is stalking their toddler and about to lug it like a pig). Dogs are dogs and they will behave as such and if that surprises you then maybe you need to learn more about dogs.
  20. I think some people forget that what works for their dog (it seems to be a lot of BC people in this thread) does not necessarily work for all dogs....... Not every dog will turn itself inside out just to please you, even if there are treats involved. And if you cannot teach the owner to use whatever method you prefer or your method does not work as expected, then what? Call it a lost cause and PTS? Even if someone else's method could work perfectly for this dog?
  21. I touch mine regularly when I forget it is on and have had no ill effects.... I only use small portable units to contain horses and sheep though, not cattle strength. I guess you have to differentiate (and while the shocks are unpleasant, I have not found them to be painful as such) ETA: Oh, this was in response to TheLBD
  22. Ah, but stock electric fences are also cruel... At least to companion animals.. And not allowed to be used near dogs and cats in NSW (I don't know about other states)
  23. Wow, that article is devastating! No mention of the lack of supervision and involvement of food? Instead, more prattling on about how "these dogs" shouldn't be in the country and dangerous dog law revisions... Really? How are people supposed to learn about ways of preventing these incidents, if the dog is always the one to cop the blame and no lessons are learnt from the situation? Are they going to ban all mastiff crosses now? It would be funny if it wasn't so very serious! And calling it an accident like there was no way to predict this could have happened does a disservice not only to the family and the little boy, but to the dog and to all future victims of similar situations...
