I am interested in peoples opinions on what a person should do before becoming a registered breeder and deciding to breed dogs. Do you think they should gain experience showing dogs, learn from more experienced people, etc, etc. Another post got me thinking about this because I beleive people should gain as much knowledge and experience before jumping into breeding and I was wondering what other peoples opinions are on this. Do you think people should just be able to become a registered breeder and start breeding dogs without any knowledge or experience what so ever. I know people have to start somewhere but was wondering what others thought.

What are you going on about . All I have said is a person wanting to breed should do research and learn things before jumping into breeding and yes know about when to expect their breed to come into season especially if they are wanting to breed so you carrying on claiming I don't know when breeds come in season is not relevant to what I have posted. If you think it is ok for people to have no idea about the basics and to just start breeding without learning or doing research well that's your opinion and I disagree. I beleive that a person should do everything they can to educate themselves and gain as much experience themselves before even considering breeding dogs. I thought the true difference between a registered breeder and a BYB was that the registered breeder actually had more knowledge about their choosen breed and had some idea of what they were doing and went out of there way to improve the breed. How can someone improve a breed if they have no idea what they are doing. Generally I thought the average registered breeder started out showing and them after learning over time and getting good results with there dogs they would go onto becoming a reg'd breeder as they had some knowledge plus met alot of experienced people to help them to start out. My apologies if I am wrong but by the original post I got the impression that she just went out and bought a dog and a bitch with the intention of breeding and that all she had done was become a registered breeder and nothing more. She did say her grand-mother was her mentor which confused me why she did not ask her grand-mother about this in the first place. To the original poster I apologise if I was incorrect and assumed wrongly about you. I hope you do take up the generous offers you have received so that you can learn as much as possible before breeding.

I understand people have to start somewhere but I beleive that it is very important that people learn as much as they can before even considering breeding and I'm sorry but if someone does not know when to expect a bitch to come in season for the first time they are showing their basic lack of knowledge and that they should spend alot more time educating themselves before even considering breeding and I don't see what is wrong with that.

Sorry if this sounds nasty but why do people buy dogs with the intention to breed when they clearly have no idea about even the basics. Rather than looking at breeding I think this person needs to spend time learning about dogs before even considering breeding her dogs. There are so many things this person can do with her dogs that will help her to learn and there is a wealth of knowledge out there. I'm sorry but I find attitudes like this persons extremely frustrating as there are enough inexperienced people breeding dogs. I think the original poster needs to really have a good think about why she wants to breed and then get out there and learn as much as she can. Working in an animal shelter I see the end results of inexperienced breeders and BYBs on a daily basis

Oh my god. I would die if my daughter did something like that. Although I will add my dogs are desexed.

I find it very cute/funny watching my daughter copying my dogs. She is at the stage where she copies everything that anyone or anything does or says. I am amazed just how quickly she is learning new words and different things each and everyday. I always thought those stories you hear about a child being raised by packs of dogs or wolves were BS but after seeing how quickly my own child copies my own dogs it made me think if a child was only ever exposed to a pack of dogs I can see how this could happen. What are your opinions on children being raised by packs of dogs/wolves. Do you beleive this could happen?

I just wanted to warn people :D about how much time they allow their young toddlers to spend with dogs. My dogs are a big part of our lives and I have recently noticed that my toddler has started to immitate my dogs. I have caught her lapping water from there water bowl. I have also caught her following the dogs around and going to the long grass to copy the dogs and chew on the grass too. She will even pant when they do. Do you think my daughter spends too much time with the dogs? Has anyone else with children experienced this????

I can't get over the pictures of that poor little boys face. I don't care about what breed of dog it is I don't think it should ever be relevant this just should not happen. The owner should have had more control over the dog (I beleive the dog was off leash at the time correct me if I am wrong)and the mother should have not allowed her child to be near an unknown animal. Even if someone tells me their dog is fine I will not let my child near that dog unless I know the dog for myself. I would never let my child near a dog just because some random person in the park says their dog is fine with kids. Who knows what really happened in this situation as the facts are the media never get it right. I just hope this little boy is ok.

Do you think these people possibly stole your dog in the first place to try and get reward money? Glad to hear you got your gorgeous dog back

Family Sues Council Over Fatal Dog Mauling Of Child
tobie replied to samoyedman's topic in In The News
Thanks Katrina Like I said I am not really sure about what happened in this case. I don't even know when it happened but I do know what the laws are in NSW and assumed these are the reasons council is being sued as per my previous post but like you said if this came in after the death of the child obviously this can not be used to sue someone. -
Family Sues Council Over Fatal Dog Mauling Of Child
tobie replied to samoyedman's topic in In The News
I don't really know much about what happened but in NSW dogs used for the purposes of hunting must be kept in a child proof enclosure exactly the same as restricted breeds as per the CAA which was clearly not done in this case. It is councils responsibilty to enforce this so I presume this is why the council is being sued also if there was prior history with these dogs and council had done nothing this again leaves them at risk of being sued. It's a very complicated matter as it is very hard to prove a dog is a hunting dog unless the owner admits it. If these dogs were hunting dogs and the owner did not have the dogs in a child proof enclosure they are liable. Regardless of all this I can't even imagine the pain and suffering that poor child went through and hopefully this sort of thing will never happen again to anyones child. -
When did they change from No Kill to low kill because they claim that they are no kill on their website only destroying aggressive or sick animals. Obviously no animal shelter can really be no kill as you can not sell RB dogs, aggressive dogs or really sick dogs so they are as close to no kill as a shelter can possibly get. Unless this has changed and they now also kill healthy dogs with good temperaments .
-
How did you go??? Did you have any luck with the RB dog???
-
Surely it can't be the first in Sydney!!! I thought that there would be a number of NO KILL Pounds already or is that only in the suburban areas and therefore not counted as Sydney? City of Sydney Council have a contract with Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter so all there dogs and cats go there as well as all dogs and cats from the Sutherland Shire obviously going there too. I'm sure there must be other No Kill shelters around too but I can't think of any so if anyones knows please let us know. I'm not sure why the article would be claiming they are the first in Sydney to be no kill Thanks
-
I thought Sutherland Shire Council's Animal Shelter was No Kill and had been for years so this shelter will not be the first No Kill Shelter in Sydney. Correct me if I am wrong.

I highly doubt that the pound will allow this. If they think the dog is a restricted breed they will just euthanase the dog after the 7 days are up (non chipped) regardless of you being able to pay for the assessments. Good luck with it anyone.

It is a legal requirement in every State and Territory for dogs to be tethered when carried on the back of a ute or truck. So simply he is breaking the law unless the dog is tethered.

I have had someone comment about my dogs wearing muzzle's also. Telling their children to keep away as my dogs must be vicious. They were wearing halti's not muzzles. I just think some people have no idea.

I personally would never leave any living thing human or animal in a vehicle that was not in a position to help themselves in the event of heat stress or a problem. I would never risk my children nor my dogs under any circumstances. I was waiting in my car today and within a minute the car was too hot even with the windows open & parked in the shade so I turned the car on along with the air conditioner but a child or dog could not do this. Even 5 mintues would have been too long. I thought it was illegal to leave children or animals unattended in a vehicle. I presume I am wrong about it being illegal to leave an animal unattended in a vehicle. I know alot of people think its ok for a quick stop to leave the dog for 5 or 10 minutes but the concerned bystander has no idea how long you will be. It seems to be common practice for people to leave dogs in cars and I am annoyed and concerned everytime I see a dog left alone especially on a hot day. How am I to know they are only going to be 5 mintues which I hope that is all they will be. I have witnessed alot of people leave dogs in vehicles whilst they do the weekly food shopping which is a disgrace and cruel. I think it should be illegal to prevent people that do think it is ok to leave a dog unattended in a vehicle for extended periods of time on hot days.

Foxy Pups 7weeks Old With Demodex Mange
tobie replied to cma076's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have seem and treated lots and lots of dogs and puppies with demodex ranging from mild cases to extreme cases as I work in animal welfare. Demodex is diagnosed by skin scrape and then your vet will provide you with the best treatment to kill the mites as to my knowledge you can not just buy something for this off the shelf- you need a vet. Plus you need a vet to monitor treatment as sometimes secondary infections can occur if the skin is badly affected. I would say your vet is saying that the pups will require more skin scrapes because you must do more skin scrapes to confirm whether or not all the mites have been killed by the treatment. Alot of vets advise that you require two clear skin scrapes before you can stop treatment. Unfortunately this means that All pups in the litter must be re-skin scraped not just one pup. A dog can appear to be clear but the scrape can tell a different story so if you were to stop treatment when the dog still has mites you will end up back at square one. Persist with treatment as it works. I have seen so many dogs appearing beyond help (totally bald, covered in infected wounds from scratching etc) from untreated demodex and by simplying treating this with Ivermectin orally daily (cheapest) or Deptomax injections weekly you can fix the problem. Good luck with your pups and try not to worry as demodex is not that bad as long as you treat it its the untreated ones that end up with major problems from what I have seen at my work. Although, I have heard that not all dogs require treatment and some resolve on their own once the immune system has matured however working in an animal shelter we have always treated rather than waiting and seeing what happens as we don't have the luxury of waiting. Good luck with your pups hope I have been of some help. -
I have been working in animal welfare for over 10 years and am absolutely discusted and horrified to hear that this could happen. I don't understand how anyone could get away with this. Everyone I have ever worked with including myself would never stand by and let this happen nor would any of the shelters volunteers. This person has broken the law and something must be done and the person responsible must be sacked. You don't need a lawyer if you can't afford it. Contact the local councillors, department of local government, your local MP. Contact your local newspaper. Please do something to help stop this from happening again.

I found the footage really upsetting. That poor lady and poor dog. Life can be so cruel at times.
-
Vets no longer tattoo when they desex. When I had one of my dogs desexed I asked for it to be done and the vet had no problem doing it. I know a few vets have received complaints when they have tattooed dogs ears so alot don't do it for this reason.

I just spent over $1,000 on my dog at the vets. I would hate to think what would happen to this dog if it got sick. I guess they would dump it at the RSPCA as it cost too much to look after or god forbid the dog would just suffer and die in pain.
