I totally agree with getting the best out of the dog you have, most of us aren't breeders. With developing drive and desire for our reward/game, we can make our dogs better and more trainable. I am lucky enough to own three very different dogs, different breeds. One is super high drive, one high drive but weak nerved, and one middle of the road cruisy dog. I would pick the high drive dog any day, he makes it so easy, anyone that has met him would agree I'm sure. But I agree with what JoeK is saying, if the dogs were bred better we wouldn't have these issues, they could and should cope in any situation. Also the few people that do battle on and get the dogs titled make the pedigree look good when that may not be acheivable for most people. Anyway, building drive/ value for the game can help any dog:) We all just want the best out of the dog we love.:D

Keen To Start Competing In Agility
PAX replied to krustie22's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Vetting details will be in the trial catalogue for each trial, whether you need to vet or not, you usually have to check into the vetting table to collect your numbers. It;s great if you can get a height card beforehand but often people just guess their dogs height (not too hard) and get measured on the day of the trial, just make a note on your entry that you will need a height card if you don't get one before you enter. -
Watch out for V and Bo at an agility trial real soon:) She's got the bug and Bo is up for it

I am not sure so am thinking out loud. If I wanted to increase drive what would i do? I would definitley kennel/crate the dog, remove all sensory stimulation. Just food for thought.

Scent Discrimination Snatch And Grab!
PAX replied to Seita's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
From the little bit I know of training scent work but working perfectly for my dog. Make sure your cue is different to a retrieve exercise cue. Put random scented articles out there so she understands she is looking for your scent and not just grab the first thing. Do not pattern train it, make it random. If she is drivey for the reward, keep it low value so she is thinking and not too excited until she totally gets the exercise. I would never correct the dog picking up the wrong article as we don't know what they smell, just don't reward wrong choices. -
Left About Turns, Left U Turns And Pivot Turns
PAX replied to stan the man's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
About turns! Handlers are to execute about turns, i.e. pivot and or u turns, as they see fit during the heeling routine without penality. -
Left About Turns, Left U Turns And Pivot Turns
PAX replied to stan the man's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
According to the rules of Dogs NSW; All turns other than about turns will be of 90 degrees and be sharpley executed. Both left and right about-turns will be 180 degrees and may be either U-turns or handler pivot turns. The Handler must not become stationary during a turn. -
Left About Turns, Left U Turns And Pivot Turns
PAX replied to stan the man's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think there are three types of left about turns. The pivot turrn, like in the link above. The U turn, where the handler walks a tight u-turn and the dog continues to heel, taking a slightly different line And a left about turn where the dog has to almost turn on the forehand to maintian the possiton, the handler turns on thee spot and remains on the same line. -
So sorry to hear your very sad news.
