  1. No doubt about your skill on the camera.
  2. I think we (or I) are also getting caught up in 'what is a correction'. For me, I think of a correction in the worst sense of the word which I know is wrong but we really need to say what we think a correction is, as it will vary greatly from person to person. I do give my own dogs corrections but it might be a subtle 'ah' or it could be a time out. I think my dogs are beautiful happy, well behaved members of my family and I do not wish to hurt them as I know they always try to do the best for me. So this is really open to personel interpretation of what a correction is. How can you correct a behavoiur that hasn't been learnt? I make sure that my dogs truely know a behaviour before I would ever correct it. I know my dogs always want to choose the correct behavoiur as they are so heavily rewarded for that choice. If they did choose the wrong behavoiur my subtle disapproval would be enough of a correction to punish them. That is where my input to this discussion is, What is a correction?
  3. Very true. I also believe building drive from a puppy is the most valuable tool the trainer will have and makes +R training easy/easier.
  4. I know some one that is/was selling one. I will find out and get back to you.
  5. Jesomil, you should watch the Patti Ruzzo DVD's, you will see a whippet trained without correction. Patti got the dog to prove the point that it can be done.
  6. For example, I know of a dog, an 8 month old GR. This dog was jumping on visitors, stealing washing from the bedrooms and crying at the door when it wanted company, it was rewarded for this as a puppy as the owners thought it was cute. They got in the (what they thought were pros) franchise Dog trainers. They were advised to alpha roll the dog when it jumped up, throw chains at it when it cried at the door and I can't remember what was suggested for the stealing. After one month this rambunctious puppy was fright biting when the owners went to pat it, and basically was a nervous wreck. Another trainer was called in and taught the dog to go to a crate and pull the door shut when the door bell rang, it was heavily rewarded with a pigs ear or what ever when the door knocked. It was taught when it wanted to come in and go out to ring a bell, when this wasn't wanted the bell was removed. The washing was kept secure and the dog was taught to retrieve via the two toy game. All this was achieved in under a month. I am just saying there are plenty of crap trainers out there and I believe you can't do much damage with +R methods. How do pet people know which method is right for the dog and them, and what methods will help or hinder the relationship that they have or want with the dog.
  7. In real life I don't see that many or any (never seen one yet) truley dominant dogs. I don't think the general dog community is out for world domination, I am sure there are dogs like this, but I have never met one and all the dogs I see respond to +R and -P, it's a NILIF world. If I felt a dog was truely dominant I would always suggest the help of a Pro trainer. I think correction training can go terribly wrong for the dog in the hands of the inexperienced dog trainer and for the most part we are dealing with Pet people. Where as +R training can't go too wrong with a bad trainer. It makes my skin crawl to see a novice handler with a check chain, to use it effectively you need some degree of experience, some people have the knack but most don't. I would never suggest correction based cures for inexperienced dog handlers, so in saying that I agree with the post on behalf of RSPCA (even though I hate to agree with them on so many other levels). I also appreciate that the Pro trainers on this site maybe see tougher breeds then I see, as I see pet dogs. I wasn't going to post in this thread but here I am.
  8. Do you mean teach your dog not to 'mark' instead of cocking his leg. When I'm walking my dogs there is no way I stop for them to pee on everything, they get one pee, no marking or checking the tree/Pee mails.
  9. Make her daily meal up in the morning and let your OH feed her treats out of that. If it gets to the end of the day and there is nothing left, thats what she gets. It is the only way to watch her daily intake, tell your OH no cheating.
  10. It is just like how some people mozzies love. My Oh gets attacked by mozzies and I don't ever get bitten. Some dogs fleas love and the kennel mate wont have any. Your dog must have a smell that attracts flies.
  11. Just wanted to add, I live in a high PT area, I use Advantix fortnightly and have never had a problem although I check my dogs daily.
  12. My dog freaks out when I try to brush her, I would imagine any normal dog would think this was a special treat as she is short haired. Don't read too much into it. Sometimes dogs act weird for no reason. I think tick collars would be equally if not more toxic than systemic products like Advantix or Frontline. Also you do not have the worry when ever people and children pat your dogs like you would with collars.
  13. Crates are always handy. I'm sure you are doing the best for him.
  14. Give him a soothing bath to get the grass pollens off him, poor baby.
  15. If you are interestred in +R training for Obedience, buy the Patti Ruzzo DVD's. They are great and even though they are a bit old now they are worth their weight in gold. Also the Joanna Hill DVDs, the motivational DVD from Dogtrain.
  16. Fly blown means he has live maggots eating his ears, I think you mean he is already 'fly bitten'.
  17. [quote name='pomquest' date='16th So far by going with SubQ fluids approach and not by IV she has lasted 36-48 hours more than those that have been down the IV path. We were determined not to hospitalise her as the little Pom needs her family around her and a reason to want to live. On the good side she has no diarrhoea and is urinating regularly but she is so so weak and we hope she can stick it out. I think she would have more chance with IV fluids, she is also two weeks older than the your other puppy so that would make her that bit stronger. I hope she makes it for you.
  18. It can take a couple of weeks after a season for everything to return to normal, she could also have a phantom preganancy and come into milk later on. Are you going to have her desexed?
  19. If she likes her food, put her on a lead and make her train to earn her breakfast, it's all part of the 'nothing in life is free' and will keep her brain busy. When you train her have a plan so you know what you are going to work on beforehand. I think you need a secure/dog proof and safe dog run for her when you are unable to supervise her.
  20. I am thinking the more you restrict life rewards the more the dog enjoys training, I could be and probably am totally wrong because I am also often confused.
  21. I don't understand your post. I have read it a couple of times and I still don't understand the question. Just thought I would say that because there are no replies.
