Collar Restrictions For Obedience Trials
PAX replied to Snoozie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If you plan on trialling you should buy a ANKC Obedience rule book form your state CC, it will answer all your questions. I think it is foolish to trial without reading the rule book and your club should be advising you of this. -
I better not tell my Dobermann that clickers don't work, she might go on strike.
-
And yes I use a clicker for trainng anything new.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. I find it very frustrating when people compare dog training/dog obedience to working dogs obedience and how people like to say that the working dog gets no reward when in fact the working dog gets the greatest reward of all. Eg, my dog loves to work sheep, I could get some very fancy duration heelwork from her if I had sheep in the paddock as she knows to earn an opportunity to get to work the sheep it has to come through me. More often than not I don't have sheep in my training area for a reward so I will use toys, food or games as her reward for playing my stupid obedience games. And another, one of my dogs loves to chase the Ibis off the football fields, I will get her to do a few things for me then release her to chase the Ibis (that is a reward that is hard to control ) away as a reward, it's not food or toys but it is a huge reward for the dog and the same principle the farmer uses. If the dog doesn't play by the farmers rules he will not have the opportunity to work the farmers stock.

Farmers use the greatest reward to dogs of all, to work stock, no need for toys as they have the big gun of rewards.

He only knows you are cranky, he doesn't know that going to the toilet is wrong as it something he has to do. I would go back to basic puppy toilet training. If you search for 'toilet training' in the the puppy problems section you will find heaps of info. Also check out 'crate training' for night time, this will help you greatly. ;)

Yes.

You have to catch the culprit in the act or it could start a pissing competition. I you can't watch them probably best they leave the room with you until you get it sorted.

Rewarding When The Dog Is Fearful
PAX replied to WinGus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have a fearful dog that also hates a bath. I just make it very matter of fact and I don't care if she is afraid, it just needs to be done (this is what I try to display), she is getting better all the time. It's the same with nail trimming. Sometimes you just have to get the job done in a business like way, no nonsense. :D I will never reward my dog when she acts fearful no matter what the circumstance. I just tell myself it is like me going to the dentist, I don't like it but I know it has to be done. Someone offering me smarties isn't going to make it better even though I love smarties. :D -
I train three dogs, two are crated while one is worked. The ones watching are extra keen to have training time with me. :D

I know my friend won the CCD on 99 with her Working BC named Ink. That's all I know.

Have emailed you.

Make sure you use really yummy treats like chicken, roast beef, little bits of cheese, something that isn't his normal food. Get the treat to his mouth as fast as you can after the click and little sessions of c/t often is best so he learns to be excited about the click.

I Want To Share My Pride And Joy With You
PAX replied to joelle's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
So nice, I have something in my eyes now. -
I was just curious if they break the habit if the dog is a problem barker or just stop while wearing the collar, you sort of answered that.

Do the electronic no bark collars with 99% success rate teach the dog not to bark or not to bark while wearing the collar?
