If you feel bad about using a halti your dog will too. If you are happier to use a martingale collar then find someone who can help you get the result you want, maybe you should explain to your club instructor how you feel about using a halti and see what they suggest, if you're not happy using one it is never going to help.

Erny I agree, but don't you think it's sad for the poor dog when owners think the dog should know this without training the dog? I think that is what the OP is getting at.

You could give Shine to me.

Need A Good Behaviouralist/trainer Please
PAX replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I attended a seminar by Peta Clark and just loved her and her solutions to problem dogs. http://www.animaltrainingsolutions.com.au/...about%20me.html -
I would agree. Umm aren't Labs gundogs/guide dogs?

I would be horrified to put a check chain on a 5 month old BC when they clearly have no knowledge of how experienced you are at using it. Before everyone shoots me, I have no problem with Check Chains with an experienced handler but most novice people will happily walk along choking the poor dog and not ever realise it. I also would have a big issue with a 'one size fits all' method, so do as previously advised a go and have a look without your puppy first. If the club has nothing to hide they will hide nothing and welcome your questions and concerns. Happy training.

When Is A Pup No Longer A Pup?
PAX replied to Just Midol's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think all breeds are at least two years before I would stop calling them pups, large breeds are later to mature. -
What's Important To You?
PAX replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
To me it's motivation. if the owner has things the dog wants then training is easy. So play with your puppy, get it addicted to games and play. When boarding dogs, the dogs that like to play are so easy to care for and give exercise to. there are just so many advantages to playing with your dog. -
BC's love balls, they are the next best thing to sheep. She is very new to your place so let her settle in, in a few days or weeks she will be looking to you for entertainment. Get a ball and start having a game with yourself, I'm sure in no time at all she will want to play ball with you. I got a working BC at 2 years of age, she had only worked sheep and never seen a ball or toy, she now loves to play ball but it took a while for her to learn this new fun game.

Dog Training - Instructor Courses?
PAX replied to bonniedog's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Contact Dogs NSW and ask. -
Crate games. How old is your dog? You need to fix the typo in the topic heading. Oops you did.

Am, I'm so sorry for your loss. Hugs to you. xxx

I think it was just one of those freak things, the dog was involved in a bad fall then most likely took the quickest route to the lure, god bless it. I would think this dog was a very good chaser to do that.

Off Lead Recall, Not Staying...
PAX replied to grotty_rotty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have not been to obedience classes- but this doesn't sound very 'educational' JulesP, We also do this for a recall but not for stay. It is a great way to help with recalls, maybe the OP misunderstood the instructors criteria. -
Ness, it creates no problem at all.

I find most dogs can easily learn stand from a hand touch, they seem to quickly work out the difference between a hand touch and a stand signal once you get both behaviours and add a verbal. Another way to teach stand is to sit in a chair and have your dog sit infront of your legs. As you get up from the chair the pup should hop up as well, it makes an easy way to free shape it. Don't do too many reps at once or they will remain sitting. Don't worry about duration until your dog knows the word 'stand'.

I have three bitches fed on Advance and raw, we have lovely green grass and never have burn marks. After reading Am's post maybe because we have a high rainfall and it waters the urine in to the lawn.

That's not true, we have the same rules between exercises.

You gave her the life that she deserved and you will know when the time is right to give her wings. Your other dog will cope better than you will, dogs are strong and brave. Maybe you can rescue another canine angel for your dog to have a new best mate. It is a hard thing to do but you will make the right decision.

Perhaps you need to have a reward she wants more than throwing the DB.

One vet told me that my dogs should be protected now for five years and another vet said for life.

The two food game is the same principle as the two hose game except any dog can play that likes food.

*Warning* you could be stuck looking at Cafepress for hours.

It is really hard to not get hung up on making it formal but don't. I don't think it matters what you train the retrieve on at first as long as it's the same article until they understand the exercise. I also don't think it matters what the dog has learnt as long as you don't rush and your dog knows what a click means. This is what I did. Get all the treats (the best you can have, raw chicken, cooked liver, whatever she goes crazy for) the clicker, DB a chair and get cosy next to your kitchen bench with all the things on the bench ready. If she loves cheese and stuff have something better, you want the best food so she wants to make the effort. Have the db behind your back and the clicker in your hand. Show her the DB and as soon as she makes eye contact click and get the DB out of her sight and treat her, build from there. You should already have this part strong if you plan to progress and have followed the Keepers retrieve. If you let her see the DB and you are not paying attention you could miss really good eye contact and attention on the DB so you must put it out of her sight when you're not ready. You want her to see the DB as the greatest thing in the world and always be rewarded for her attention/happy attitude to it. By the time you are at putting it on the ground you should almost have to fight your dog (in the nicest way) to be able to get it to the ground as the dog wants to get it so bad to get that click. Don't worry about a sit or anything else, all you are aiming for is the DB flying and having lift off, if she gets it off the ground just click while it's in her mouth and have a party. When she understands this, if you delay the click she will(should) go back to the DB and pick it up again, then you click and have a bigger party. Always quit while your ahead. The easiest way to stuff it up is by going for too much too soon, don't be greedy, make haste slowly. The beauty of C/t'ing is you can't stuff anything only take longer. Do you know how to play the two food game?
