Baltimore Police Dog Training Video
PAX replied to huski's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
From what I could work out of the training it looks sad, poor dog. IMO it looks like they are trying to get the dog to lose focus on the attacker...(but who knows) it's very sad, and god bless Malinois drive, looks like really bad training/handling and I don't imagine the poor dog learnt anything that helps the handler. Wonder how anyone could think slamming a dog on it's back that many times would make training better, no matter what the drive. -
I think it's next year Huski, when he is back in Australia and going to WA also. Really?! Where do we find out more info so we can get in on that?? Not 100% sure but email Gina. for more WA info.

Lol, I was thinking WT?, first I have heard of it.

It can be really hard at a club.....big classes and one trainer. I suggest you watch the trainers at you club, there is most likely an advanced class after your class. Pick the trainer thats dogs work the way you want your dog to work then stalk that trainer.....kidding, just ask them for advice.

OT but...I was at the pound one day and there was a lovely older BC boy whose owner had passed on. He looked so sad and confused at the pound, you could tell he was a spoilt and much loved boy, his owner was middle aged and died unexpectedly, he apparently was sitting with his owner when she was found. There are a lot of dogs that would love to live with an older owner as a constant companion, they are often good ears for their owners too. My Nan is 95 and still going strong, she had a lovely mini smooth Dacshund, retired from a breeder, she was my Nan's constant companion, and always let Nan know when someone was at the door or the phone was ringing, she would race Nan to the phone:)) I dread the day that a breeder or family members think I'm too old for a dog, but I think puppies are too much for an elderly person.

Looks like dog heaven, lucky Pep! Whoops I said Pep, I meant E I O )

You can keep treats on you, just don't feed them. Before a training session, without the dogs seeing, stash food pots about, then you can randomly reward from different stations in the training area. Also good for the dogs to learn that just because you have treats on you, doesn't mean they are available.

Go to some dog shows and research your breed, then you can make an informed decision whether breeding is right for your dog and you. Good on you for asking advice. Lots of cute puppies out there, you need need to make sure you're helping the breeding cause and not breeding more puppies that will end up as BYB breeders.

I was blown away with Bedazzled and Plotomys stays at the Royal, those dogs just sat in the benches with no restraints all day. was awesome. Lets me know where my training needs to improve:))

I used to have two Dobermann, I taught them to fetch me a tissue when I said Achoo!. Was a great trick and won the Dobes many friends. it was all just shaped by changing the fetch cue....just another behavior for the dogs but a trick for us.

Dog Mince - Curious On Your Thoughts!?!
PAX replied to Sunnyflower's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am lucky because I live in a semi rural area that is shared with tonnes of greyhound owners. I get fresh chicken, available three times a week at 50 cents per kilo, I can buy whole frames, that are so meaty and include the livers. or minced carcasses, it is minced in front of me on demand, so I can see it is preservative free, also can order necks or whatever. I buy beef mince, human quality, that I can watch be minced for $2.50 per kilo. It's beef skirt. Fresh duck necks for $2.00 per kilo, used to be $1.00 per kilo but just doubled. I also buy fresh, snap frozen pilchards from my local fish monger for $5.00 per kilo, the most expensive purchase. I don't feed my dogs pet quality food as I don't want them to consume the preservatives and artificial colourings, they eat better than me. -
Can I also add, I train quite a few pet handlers, if the puppy or dog knows a trick or two, that dog moves from dumb dog to smart puppy. IMO this is a great thing, if people are proud of their dog they will put in the effort and keep training. I also agree that there is a difference with laughing with joy with your dog and laughing at you dog. Dogs are smart, they get it.
-
I started to train tricks when I first started with clicker training, trick traing adds no pressure to the handler, doesn't matter if you stuff it up, it's all just fun training. IMO, to the dog, all taught behaviors are just tricks. how can the dog tell the difference between shaking hands and drop, just behaviors on cue. and all tricks. I don't like the dancing salsa clip of the Goldie, it spends way too much time on it's hind legs. It is a poor example of dancing with dogs and does the sport no justice. If it was in a competition here (from the little bit I know) I think it would score badly. Did not like it and felt really sad for the dog.

hmm.. after watching this , I can understand why people see obedience trained dogs as 'robots'. It certainly is not anything I would be interested in ..I do not find it attractive , or showing off a dog's cleverness (apologies) I think it's brilliant, would love to be as good a trainer as IB. Don't have to worry about seeing dogs like that here.
-
I really think all the judges and spectators want us to pass, no one wants to see failure. When I saw your Dane trial I thought you were both awesome, I'm positive most people thought the same, so take that on board. Just like how you felt watching the greyhound.
-
I get really nervous too, it does get better the more you trial, also watching clips like the one Ptolomy makes you realise it should fun, its not like we win a million for it...lol Be confident in how good you have trained your dog. Think of it as a chance to show your dog off (as a wise trialler told me today). At the end of the day, you do take your favourite dog home:))

They should head off to a dog show and meet the breeds. So many choices.
