Do chicken frames have enough meat on them? The ones I get from the butcher near me have minimal meat on them. Pet mince is usually minced chicken frames, not something I would feed my dogs anymore. I know plenty of dogs fed frames and good kibble and they look a treat. They usually have plenty of fat which is what growing pups also need. I've always thought that RMBs stood for raw meaty bones, don't see where the meaty will be in terms of frames. I've also heard that some people like to feed their pups (esp large breed ones) adult food instead of puppy food which has more fat, so I guess it boils down to individual choice ETA: Also, how would adding frames to kibble result in balanced calcium : phosphorus ratio when you're adding more calcium to balanced ratios in kibble?

Heart Worm Protection For New Pup- Help Pls!
minyvlz replied to rose11's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I used to give Valuheart, a cheaper alternative to Heartguard, that prevents heartworms only. I believe flea protection should be administered if and only if a) there are fleas in the area b) it's summer time. I worm them if they have worms, or show signs that they do. I don't give any heartworm protection now, under the advice of my vet, but it would be unwise for anyone else to do the same without consulting their vet. -

Temperament Differences Between Maltese And Shih Tzu

Thanks I found the way to get him to move forward is using targeting. Just have to modify each trick to suit one's dogs! -
Temperament Differences Between Maltese And Shih Tzu
minyvlz replied to Shakti's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have trained many dogs .. and none with food or toys . Find something he does like! perhaps a squeaky toy? a game? a cuddle ? vocal/physical praise works very well IF the dog isn't cuddled and patted for doing nothing except being there ;) that, and being smart - you should have a very willing student if you try Nothing In Life Is Free ,orNILIF . CLICK HERE for info on what that is . There is also info HERE Oh - the few shih's I've known have been just delightful and so laid back Malts I've known have been much more active and willing to try anything . I knew one who used to enjoy pretending he was a sheep dog! Ah, to be clear I was talking about tricks. I had the hardest time teaching him 'crawl' as his nose (and body) would not follow the treat! Obedience is carried out without food or toys or anything. He is picture perfect at obedience. Yep I've always done NILIF. Thanks for the 2nd link, haven't seen that one. My boy is very into praise though! Loves attention from humans -
I agree, I would probably give the necks a miss as they are too small for a dog Chester's size. I would also give more meaty bones instead of frames, but then again that's just me I was wondering about the calcium:phosphorus ratio with too much bone too.

Temperament Differences Between Maltese And Shih Tzu
minyvlz replied to Shakti's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a Maltese x (mostly Maltese) and he is 4kgs. He loves strangers and would go home with them, especially if you are under 10 or female He is very smart but not very trainable due to his lack of food drive. His nose will never follow the target no matter how tempting the food is or however hungry he is. According to my trainer it is a common issue with small dogs, not sure how true that is. I know of a Pomeranian who will eat until his stomach bursts. Very sweet, affectionate, loves people and large dogs. Likes Doesn't really like small dogs who bug him to no end but will say hi no matter what. He loves to sit at OH's feet and at our beds and only comes up onto the bed if I tell him to. He is content with being alone. He is kept in a puppy cut all year long. Not barky at all. For me I preferred the looks of the Maltese, the smaller size, their 'smiliness' and silkier coat as compared to the Shih Tzus. Not familiar with ST temperaments although have seen quite a few out and about at parks and on walks. -
Small Inside Dogs And Desexing - Why And Why Not?
minyvlz replied to Hugobbear's topic in Puppy Chat
Agree with this. I also wouldnt consider 6 months to be fully grown. My maltese x was fully grown at about 8 to 9 months of age, so it really depends on the individual dog. I didn't desex him because he had an undescended testicle (until 10months) and could do with a tad more testosterone. Once his hormones appear to be a problem he will be desexed. We also are planning not to bring him to the dog park anymore incase he starts humping other dogs. If you read the article on early desexing floating around here you might be more willing to wait too. -
Give kitty her own room, let them sniff each other from under the door. Rub them with each other's scent from towels. Let them go at their own pace. That's what ive learnt when I brought my kitten back a month ago, but turns out we didn't need that - she was scared first day, then living with the dogs became second nature. Although my terrier would need supervision with her as she's so tiny! She also might not be used to so much licking!

What Is Your Favourite Time Of Day With Your Dog/s?

Would induced vomiting help in a situation like this?

I have two little ones, but spend quite a bit on their diet. Hormone/AB/GH-free (at least I haven't gone to organic) red meats etc. Then there's obedience and vet visits. Already have grooming tools, jackets, toys, leads, collars etc so those already cost a bomb. We used to go to obedience in a taxi before we got the car so it was about $100 per trip in cab fare alone, weekly...

There is another Eagle Pack though, those come in solid coloured bags with very different ingredients. Holistic Select is the Eagle pack one. It was renamed Holistic Select and given its own website. They are both owned by Wellpet foods.

Yep, have had a look although their prices seem too high. I can get RC Max Junior from my local Pet Barn for $124.95, Pookinuk sells it for the same then have to pay shipping. I was asking about the other one, umm paws four life, because they have it at $109.95 including shipping. That's a big enough difference for me to give it a try I think... Yeah well, pawsforlife has a very limited range though. Just had a quick look at Pookinuk and from what I can see, it looks like Pookinuk do not offer the "Auto delivery". I tend to always run out of food at inopportune times and this feature would be pretty handy I think. Also Paws seems like better value (free delivery and better prices on my Royal Canin food). Overall, $20 cheaper from Paws For Life delivered Let me know how the test goes - I am keen to try if it all works out. Ah I think they are launching it. Not that I'm interested in either service (dogs not on a commercial diet) If you're looking at RC then yes pawsforlife looks like a better option

Doesn't Pookinuk have a similar service?

I would like yoghurt treats without sugar, or not a lot anyway. Tuna treats are always a big hit. Air/Refrigerator/freeze dried will be my first choice. Maybe an organic range? If you can make roast chicken treats without wheat/carbs I would like that too Smelly treats are also good. Maybe with bits of cheese.

No raw meat is mostly moisture. I think it's about 16% protein if I'm not mistaken.

Are you talking about Eagle Pack Holistic or Holistic Select? My local Petbarn sells both and they did not have EPH for the longest time. Holistic Select has always been there. Not sure if they are now the same product. They seem to be from the same company?

I don't know if it's okay to post this here, but I was wondering if someone can help identify this dog? I am new to the world of dogs so haven't seen many. I'm thinking a Sheltie or Collie but the dog's snout isn't that long? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz1idnMQFOA at about 1:54 Thanks very much

I've never heard of it This sounds like a good alternative to the usual 3 puppy vacs. If anyone has the name that would be awesome.
