  1. hey LP I read your post as "feeding mice without bone" Thought it was a little odd coming from you, and my next thought was geez you'd have to have a small filleting knife ahem...carry on, don't mind me
  2. I really don't know how much the boys cost us foodwise, I don't want to know and don't really care! Their groceries are the same as ours, with the exception that we don't eat their kibble, and they don't use our deodorant Their meals are as follows: brekkie - kibble lunch - BARF patty (usually frozen, slows them down a bit so they don't gobble, and keeps them cooler) dinner - chicken wings for Indy and necks for Keg. These from Lenards @ $2.50/kg. Coles is $4.50/kg. Once or twice a week a nice big bone to gnaw on. The BARF patties (more like balls, but patties is sooo much more tasteful ) consist of mince, couple of egg yolks and shells, tinned mackerel/tuna/salmon, grated carrot, broccoli, zucchini, lettuce, bok choy, snow peas, apple, strawberries, squirt of honey, teasp garlic, teasp kelp powder, teasp baker's yeast. I don't put in tomato, grapes, capsicum and of course onion. If we don't buy it for us, then they don't get it ie we're not real keen on bean sprouts, so we just don't buy it. Indy is now banned from cheese as his farts REEK afterwards! The kibble to date has been Euk Puppy as it's easy to get and no dramas with it, but when at the vets on the weekend they gave us a free sample of Hills Science Puppy. There's a special on it with a $20 cash back, so we bought a bag of that. I'm a bit suss about it now as the blurb that came with it is really quite anti-BARF without mentioning BARF - ie don't feed raw meat or bones!!! Seems like a ploy to get you to buy their stuff and only their stuff. So once this bag is finished we'll go back to Euk on principle.
  3. I whacked a thread up here called "101 uses for apple cider vinegar" back in March. Brilliant stuff.
  4. where's whitewolf? Haven't seen her around for a while...she'd have loads of advice.
  5. Can't say I like them much either. Indy wolfed his down within seconds, so hardly was going to be beneficial to his teeth. And yup, went straight through him eeeewwww
  6. That is heartbreaking news. My sincere condolences to you. Take care.
  7. Indy had a rear claw that just flopped - no bone connection to the leg itself. He never got it caught, but it would have one day I'm sure. It was chopped off when he was desexed, and I had a greater fear that he would have a go at that wound than his ex-dangly bits, but he wasn't bothered at all by either. The vet did a good neat job, there is very little scar, the wounds (both ops) healed very nicely and it cost an extra $18 to do it. I was hoping it would be a freebie!! But sounds like we got a good deal compared to some. Would do it again if the situation required it.
  8. Also for a treat, a small can of tuna, salmon etc - Indy loves it! Also had a tin of smoked oysters (blerk) but Indy gobbled 'em up. Gave him a good few hours before he was allowed to give kisses again! Or mix them up with the mince. Whack a whole bunch of fruit and veges in the blender to roughly chop them (except onion of course) and mix it up into the mince. Ration should be more fruit/veges than mince. Doesn't matter if it's beef, chicken, pork, lamb mince or whatever. This is our Sunday arvo ritual to mould them into round handful sized patties, then freeze them. As it's warm up here we feed them to Indy frozen - it also takes him longer to wolf it down. Don't fuss too much - they're tough!
  9. Exactly - and not just in this issue either of course.
  10. Johnson's no more tears baby shampoo/conditioner here. Probably tested on beagles once upon a time ;) , but it's actually lovely and makes Indy smell bootiful, gives him a smooth shiny coat and serious mad zoomies! Also says it has a neutral pH. If it's good enough for skin babies... Congrats Ashka!
  11. awww give the guy a break, I've seen my little nieces when they were hours old and their bits were a lot different to what I expected due to hormones straight after birth. They were disproportionatly big! If the bits aren't quite what he expected, well naturally he'd be a bit confused, and it's easier to get an anonymous opinion over the 'net. It's been a long time since I've seen girly doggie bits, so I probably would have been none the wiser! DD that's a beautiful pup you have there, let her meet lots of other doggies so she's a great canine citizen. Can't recommend puppy school highly enough!
  12. Good stuff! Might just be a case of experimenting with different foods, try to wean back on to raw meat/veg/fruit/bones. As long as she's healthy and energetic she'll be fine. She looks lovely!
  13. He he Indy is in hyper mode this morning apparently - better knock out more food so he doesn't have the energy! His favourite trick is running up the hall and doing a belly slide I think Daddy will need to have some naps so that Indy cuddles up too to calm him down! Swallowed the chicken neck whole, eh? That sounds more like it! I'm sure Indy inhales his :D . Yep, sounds normal to me! For the first few weeks we watched like a hawk everything that he did, after a while you figure out, yep, things are pretty well sorted. I only lift a head now when things are quiet...too quiet...must be up to mischief!
  14. Sorry, I'm all growed up now and I don't know any nightclubs anymore Ah, it's late, couldn't resist, and seeing it's gone off topic at least once, another one won't hurt :D
  15. Well, he's 6 months, just hit 10kg in a pretty linear way (no obvious growth spurts), and he's very trim. Looking from above he has a good waist, and he has good muscle tone. He's very active, and in no way do we want him fat. He eats what he gets in less than 10 minutes, and he has never had additional treats, other than say half a doz 5c piece-sized liver treats. If it looks like he's on the verge of porking up, we'll reduce the amount, but right now, he looks the goods
  16. yep, whole and raw. Although at first we broke the wings into thirds at the joints to make it a little easier, these days he just seems to inhale them Chicken bones are ok, like any bones, with supervision. When they are cooked, that's when they are more dangerous as they splinter. You can also go for chicken necks. It's the calcium and other goodies in the bones that's good for them. Also, when they're fresh, it keeps teeth clean and breath ok. Any large meaty bones we give Indy basically have a day's lifespan on them as they get really manky with the heat, and that's when he gets bone breath. Fresh is best, naturally The other meal Indy gets every now and then (weekends mostly when I've got more time to make it is a porridge meal with raw oats soaked for a bit, and then add some dried fruit to it (and a few more goodies, such as egg yolk, honey etc (like in the barf patties)). He wolfs that down too.
  17. Don't cook 'em Here's what we've given Indy since we got him: Advance Puppy/Euk Puppy for brekky (about a handful), occasionally 2 or 3 tablespoons of plain yoghurt by itself. We started off with having it moistened, but he didn't like it after a few weeks, so we just gave it to him dry and it's gone in no time. Lunch: frozen barf patty (includes mince, fruit/veges, tsp garlic, tsp kelp powder, tsp brewer's yeast powder, tin of sardines, bit of olive oil, spoon or two of yogurt, sometimes honey) all mixed up homogenously. Sometimes a fish oil capsule broken over the top too. This is about snowball sized. Dinner: 3-4 chicken wings. Every 2-3 days he gets a lamb shank or pig's trotter (cheap as). The only treats he gets are liver treats when doing commands. We don't succumb to the pleading beagle eyes. She's got you wrapped around her little paw! Put the food out - if she doesn't eat it in 10 minutes take it away. She'll eat whatever you put in front if she's hungry enough! As long as there's plenty of water she'll be right.
  18. I've heard too that until about 6 months you shouldn't feed egg white. Just as a precaution I've just used the yolk, but also put the shells in the patty mix and tossed the white. I'd love to see Indy's reaction with a whole egg though! I don't cook them though.
  19. hey Dublin - looks like BL answered for me - ta! Nuther thing - it's also supposed to neutralise urine a little so it doesn't burn the grass. Trouble is, that worked for a little while, but the grass has burn marks all over it despite putting a splash in Indy's water bowls. Any suggestions?
  20. Just found another use for it - figured a list would be really useful, particularly for those who have not discovered the wonders of it. Anyway, I've been using it for the following: - A splash in drinking water as a natural flea repellant - Gives a shiny coat - A bigger splash in Indy's water bath to keep the mozzie wrigglers out - Good for keeping intestinal flora in check - Mild disinfectant latest one I heard (thanks Kez) was to soak meaty bones overnight to prevent bone splintering (also toughens meat for a longer chew) Any others...add away! This stuff is better than sliced bread!
  21. Ooh I like "get the stubbie"!! ;) Only trouble is we do home brew in plastic bottles and Indy's favourite toys are...plastic bottles But, you raised a good point - given Indy is a beagle we should try some "scent" tricks, and the cards one isn't bad. It could evolve to a "psychic dog" magic trick with some more thought! Thanx for the ideas all
  22. Haven't used it, but I think it's related to Aloe Vera? Sort of a cactusy succulent plant that grows in arid areas.
