Yes he is not exhibiting any signs of lethargy etc. I suspect he is has been licking it and have told him off a couple of times for doing so. Unfort though I cannot do much about it during the day while I am at college? Only for the reason that he then cannot get through the doggy flap to go to the toilet etc and he would have no qualms about doing it on the floor which we have only just got back on track again. I can imagine he may lick it a bit.....! Is there anything else that would be effective? Thanks so much

My boy has currently been desexed (last Thursday) and appears to have a rash around his stitches. Is this something I should be concerned about? Thanks in advance!

So......what do we nickname our dogs?! Any odd ones? Poor Chase is also affectionately known as "Potty" and "Poopy" by Mum and siblings it wasn't until my friend commented on how we seemed to like names associated with toilets that it hit home unfortunately Chase got so used to being called Potty that he ONLY responded to it for 2 weeks so of course when we were out and about, I would call his name to get his attention with no response.....until I realised I had to do the "Poooooootttttttyyyy" and pup bounced back over- needless to say we earned some weird looks!

I was wondering how hard it would be to train a pup to use a dog door - good to read it's doable. We'll be doing the same - crate and closed laundry and doggy door to the side of our yard which is mostly granite path but will include a 2m2 grass area and a bark section we'll try for toilet training. Very doable! Depends on pup though and how quickly they learn to go in and out, if you give them a bit of a push in and out a couple of times then they should get the gist of it- Chase on the 1st day could get out but couldnt get in. He was so determined to come back in he mastered it on his 2nd day at home ;) we have a similar set up to what your proposing Stone cutter......we intended to crate train but he just went in and out of his flap anyway, there didnt seem to be much point if he took himself out to toilet.

I think searching the Maltese breed page and puppy page is a good idea. Generally most of the breeders would be reputable I think but there are the odd bad fish. Make sure you give them a call, ask lots of questions and go over their website if they have one. Look at the puppy listings then maybe go into the profile section and see if they are actively showing! Questions and more questions! If they sound 'off' or display BYB'er/Puppy farmer characteristics in anyway then I would probably not purchase a pup from them.

I don't have a pure bred Maltese, but a maltese x poodle who looks predominantly Maltese. He is an absolute delight- laid back, fairly docile, playful, affectionate, adores cuddles, confident (not excessively but a nice self confidence) and is so friendly! Loves everyone (human and canine) and everything, fabulous with kids and people of all ages. I have had moments when taking him out for a walk and when I am fixing my heart rate monitor, I turn around and a 3 yr old has picked him up but he just snuggled close. Just a happy, happy little boy. Very intelligent and picked up tricks and training in a heartbeat. I find his coat really easy to maintain and non shedding (although I am not too sure if this is a Maltese trait....) with regular brushing- we just incorporate it into our routine. I have rarely heard him yap/bark and only while playing (count it all on one hand) but it is so quiet it doesn't disturb anyone. I don't think he has little dog syndrome.....but we have worked really hard to treat him like a normal dog and he has not had any behavioural issues. I wouldnt count on him being helpful if we were robbed or anything though! He would just wag his tail madly, greet them happily then lick them to death, strangers and over friendliness don't faze him in the slighest Obviously he is a little muttie and you may be better off listening for someone who can feed you some Purebred info! He does obviously I am sure have some Maltese traits. But not all small dogs has SDS. Good luck! I wouldn't rush too much for a pup, you need to ensure you find the right reputable breeder and puppy for you! Prices will vary, although I would be wary of ones which are going cheap. You have to decide how much you are prepared to spend and look into who you are getting the puppy from, ask around (even get a reference) and decide if it is worth your money. I for an example, would be happy to pay more money for a pup who I knew had good lines, health checked parents with proof of testing, registration info and is raised within the home evironment with the breeder. I would personally look for recomendations through the fabulous people here at DOL!

Thanks everyone! I think a trip to bunnings is in order tomorrow!! You have all given me some good ideas Yeah Stonecutter, I would prefer something like that but we have 2 we joined together and it isnt really big enough for him to run around during the day (Lots of zoomies from our boy).....would buy a stack if they werent so expensive! Would prefer to go and pick it up at a store/warehouse as I dont have a credit card. .......would love it if I could buy about 4 for under $150 (I'll keep dreaming!)

With Chase, we got a doggy flap and built a dog pen which connects to the house outside. That way he has access to inside and out. We therefore never had to worry about him having accidents as he was acustomed to going in and out of the flap from day one. He has the option of lying on the grass under the trees in the shade or the cool laundry tiles for hot days.

We have an unfenced swimming pool so we built a dog run for Chase. He HATES the water with a passion and refuses to go near the pool though. However when we go to other peoples houses he can still get through the pool fence.......10 cm wide/off the ground is no problem for him to get through. Most of my friends put up chicken wire around the bottom end of the fencing for their small dogs as a precaution

Hi everyone, We are in the process of redoing our garden and the houses next door are wanting to put up new fences. Hence we need to put in temporary fencing for a small Maltese x puppy. I was wondering if anyone could reccommend cheap, yet sturdy temp fencing? It would probs be up for around 2 months. He can't jump etc and can escape through small holes......

What's Wrong About Giving Dogs Human Names?
Katie P replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
My Dogs name is 'Chase'........After the HOUSE character and also because I liked 'Chase the dog'.....suits him terribly well! I am suprised as to how many boys I have met with that name......I consider it to be a dog name. I know someone who named her Cat 'Sifa Cat' hahaha I have 2 favourite shows so my animals will be called after them. My next on which will hopefully be a girl, I shall call 'Tempe'........not too many ppl like it but its different! -
Good Luck! Hope you get the Job
