  1. Yep, they will. One method is by fighting. That's not acceptable to me, particularly when the odds are stacked against one dog. People take their dogs to offlead dog parks to run them offlead. Who says they have to want to play with others? Allow your GSD to approach my dogs and I'd be telling you call it off very quickly. Allow it to chase them and it would be copping a boot. A dog in prey drive is capable of harming another dog and I've had the vet bills to prove it. No offense but if a big GSD comes over to me while I'm carrying my Charlie and won't leave me alone, I will be piss off too, especially is you stand in a distant and do nothing about it. You should of called your dog off that person straight away, especially if you see that they are uncomfortable. I wouldn't hit your dog but I will definitely have words with you about it. I understand where you guys are coming from and since being a member of here I have learnt quite a lot about what to do in all different situations. I would've handled things much differently in my dog-owner time if I had been on here longer but in this case I didnt see a problem with what Max was doing. I do disagree with some peoples comments about a dog chasing another dog - maybe it is wrong - I don't know but I would like someone who is experienced in dog behaviour to tell me what is wrong with it and I would be MORE THAN HAPPY to listen and take the advice. If someone tried to 'remove' my GSD or hit my GSD and they got bitten (I know they wouldnt because of previous experience and Max's responses) - TBH I wouldnt give a s**t. And let me say before I go on that YES there ARE stupid people out there (like I used to be) who dont understand that a dog is distressed or that MY dog shouldnt be doing what it is doing - and some people wouldnt remove their dogs if asked...but I DO NOT under ANY circumstances think that someone should take it upon themselves to remove another persons dog - IF it comes down to it - LEAVE. Dont touch another dog that you don't know. That stupid lady could've gotten bitten by hitting my dog. THAT is also stupidity IMO. By all means - go and have words to the person. But don't take those kind of matters into your own hands. And I hope you guys are referring to 'a GSD coming up to my little dog' as the fact that a GSD is a large breed. Not because they are GSD. Then it comes under Breed specific S**t. I have read everyones comments on here and realise I have been doing things that would make other little dogs uncomfortable and in having little dogs that arent good with big dogs I know what owners etc feel like. I will be changing my behaviour from now on. But it doesnt mean I don't disagre with a lot of things that are being said.
  2. They're actually doing that in Doonside as well. They just need the funds to get it going.
  3. First of all - Welcome MuckyPUg! Im sorry to say but I have been in this situation with my two very large GSD - and to be perfectly honest I got EXTREMELY annoyed (and please dont think I am talking about you in this situation - this is a personal experience) when a couple came in to an offlead dog park with their JRT. They carried him in and wouldnt put him down because Max was following them trying to see what they had in their hands (I was the only person in the VERY LARGE dog park and I was sitting under a free)... When they put their dog down the dog started doing zoomies and max was chasing him - the dog kept going and going and didnt run to the owners in fear of max - he just kept doing zoomies... Long story short - the woman owner hit my dog because it wouldnt styop chasing the JRT. I got up and abused the s**t out of her. I do NOT in ANY way think max OR I were in the wrong. The dog CLEARLY wasnt scared and Max wasnt being aggressive at all. I went ape s**t at this lady because she asked 'is this your dog' (well duh I was the only one there) and then she hit him... Max came running back to me because I started yelling my head off at her. Since this has happened I have been extremely aware about people and their little dogs. Dogs will sort themselves out. (Most of the time). Has your little pug hurt any of the other dogs? Have the other dogs hurt your little pug? (All you can do is take charge of your pug - unfortunately you WILL get deads**ts at the dog park who dont care that your dog is distressed - and I AM the kind of person who would say 'its alright hes great with little dogs) - but if someone said to me well my dog isnt good then I would take max away - but I would ALSO ask 'why are you at an offlead dog park then?' Your pug is lashing out at bigger dogs because that is their way of saying 'no I dont want to be sniffed leave me alone' - if the big dogs wont leave then I would politely ask the owners to just be mindful of their dogs because your dog doesnt like them and you dont want any of them getting hurt... As I said - dogs learn to sort themselves out - doing little snaps and doing little barks is your pugs way of saying leave me alone - and that is ok - it only turns bad when you dont know how the other dog will react... And you never do. So honestly? I would steer clear of THAT dog park - you said you go to another one? Stick to going to that one.
  4. There's a lady at work we call the Terrier but that's another story completely. Aren't they a terrier at all? I've always thought they were classified as terriers and I've often heard them referred to as Maltese Terriers. Is this wrong is it? Well, I've learned something new today! This happened to me just last week! LOL I thought they were terriers as well! lol We have a purebred maltese - she lives with my MIL. I have to say - they are amazingly awesome dogs. Mia is an absolutely character - she has such a BIG personality. She does zoomies at least once a day. She will play hide and seek (literally - like, I will hide and she will look for me until she finds me). She sits on the windowsill like a cat and watches the front... shes a pretty big barker. They are fantastic little dogs and Im sad to hear that they are rare - I actually thought they were extremely common. Btw/// what is a swf?
  5. Im not a breeder and I dont have staffys but I am assuming it is just the colour of their fur or their pigmintation. Think about how our skin changes colour as we get older - we get darker in summer and lighter in winter - some of us get freckles... same sort of thing with dogs... especially with white haired dogs because they are more likely to have their skin change from the sun (like APPARENTLY blondes and redhead humans). Think about chinese crested dogs - look at photos and look at how different colours their skin is. skin is commonly changing and I really wouldnt worry about it - but again, as I said - I am not a breeder
  6. I agree with this. There are many deaf dogs living great lives - but it takes a lot of commitment from the owner. The thing I'd worry about most is recall (but it can be trained). Sure the dog can read hand signals, but they need to be looking at you to see them. If they're focusing on the new dog that has just come into the park, that can be hard! I find it odd that some people say it shouldn't be taken into account when looking for a dog?? I meant in the sense that when you are looking for a dog and then someone says 'oh they're deaf' dont just go - oh ok don't want it then. That's what I meant. Not necessarily that it shouldnt be considered but that it shouldn;t be the deciding factor (unless it wont fit into your lifestyle or unless you dont have the means to care for it properly).
  7. Fantastic advice! I have noticed that with my old dog (passed away) - he could only see shadows and couldnt hear a thing - but when he saw movement and realised it was another dog then he would follow them to go out the back door.
  8. ABSOLUTELY COMPLAIN!!! Don't let it happen to someone elses babies. That is effing ridiculous - I would have gone absolutely ape s**t if I came back from a weekend and saw that. Think about it - when we get scratched or (for eg, me today - my toe got sliced by a high heel on the bus) and we are in pain. Its the same with dogs - your poor girl was probably in pain for a while because of what happened... and they did absolutely nothing about it. I would EXPECT from a boarder that if ANYTHING were to happen they would call me and tell me about it - same with day care centres when a kid hurts themselves etc. I would be ropeable if no one told me and I came back to that. I would absolutely complain. And never go back there. And tell EVERYONE you know to stay away from them.
  9. LOL it must be a Cav thing because my sisters dogs are both cavs and do the same thing - and my two OLD dogs (one passed away) they are both cavs and... again... same thing. LOL
  10. I should probably note that the two dogs I was talking about with the hand signals are my two GSD - the two old ones I was talkiong about are two other dogs. lol
  11. I have heard that deafness is absolutely no issue and shouldnt be taken into account if considering getting a dog... My dogs have learnt both speech commands and hand signals and they respond very well to both. To make them sit I raise my hand and say nothing, they'll sit immediately. To make them drop I tap the ground and they drop immediately. To make them eat I tap the bowl and they start eating again. Sometimes I think hand signals work BETTER than speech! LOL I have two very OLD dogs that are deaf and blind - but they know the families movements and what times we do everything so they're pretty easy to control. why did you want to know about deaf dogs or puppies? PS. And it doesnt mean they arent any less intelligent than a non-deaf dog... or any less affectionate. They are completely the same except they cant hear. That's it No big deal for doggies.
  12. I know someone who does ALLLLL of these!!!! She is shocking!
  13. Please - I hope no one takes offense to this - but could we possibly keep these posts to the in the news (cruelty) section? I saw the heading and immediately felt sick... I really hope no one is offended by this... I would just prefer not to see this kind of awful stuff.
  14. It is absolutely beautiful!!!! What an incredible work of art!! I would pay a lot of money to have something like that in my backyard!!
  15. I understand completely! Keep your eye out in the local paper - I don't know whether you know but each week in the Chronicle they have a 'Dog of the Week' and every weke if you look in there you might come across scootas soul mate! I also understand that you wouldnt want to traumatize them. I think they best thing in a situation is to take the dog to your house for a few hours and see how they go - Im pretty sure the pound is actually reasonably flexible on that sort of thing
  16. If someone said to me 'we only want a pet' - I would immediately say no to them. clearly they dont know enough about prices or about the going rate for the pups... I dont know - am I wrong in hyperthetically doing that ?
  17. Sorry to hear that she has cost so much. That is a lot of money, but you know what - I would pay that much for my boy and girl too.
  18. When ie what year did people buy their dogs also (as this will reflect on price also. I bouight Max in september 09 and Jenna in October 10
  19. If they are already very vocal then you can capture it and put it on cue with clicker training. You have to do it properly though, follow through so that it's properly on cue. Changing a bark to a growl is not a lot harder, you shape through selective reinforcement. I taught my Golden to bark at the door when he wanted to go out. This was a terrible mistake, once he figured out he could ask he would come in and out a lot more often. It was also quite jarring, having him bark inside. So what I did was shape him to "whisper" by ignoring the loudest barks (at first), then rewarding only progressively softer barks until we got down to a whisper. He figured out what I wanted very quickly, mercifully. After I had taught that, I conditioned another cue (known as an "S-delta" if you want to look it up) that meant that I wasn't going to reinforce for some time. So he might ask, I would say "shush", then he would go do something else until I had finished what I was doing. Thats amazing! haha very cool! My dogs are normally pretty good with needing to go out - the back door is kept open most of the time anyway but if it isnt they just come and sit next to me.
  20. I am disgusted that the poor little pup could have parvo and still get sold for $1800???? Thats absolutely ridiculous. And what kind of conditions are in that shop where puppies get parvo?!?!?!? When my sister and her OH went looking for dogs - they desperately wanted a beagle. they loved the breed, but when they went to a breeder they were pretty much told that a beagle wasn't the right dog for them and they werent allowed to buy one. They werent upset or anything and theyh researched more into it and now have two very old cavs. I think they did the right thing by going and researching about the breed before they did anything.
