How Do 2 Golden Retrievers Get Along With Each Other?
Leelaa17 replied to goldee's topic in General Dog Discussion
Set him up so that he can't ignore you. Feed him on a long line and call him off if he heads towards her bones.. and if he doesnt' come you reel him in - no need to jerk. just pull him quietly back to where he should be. Or feed them in their crates as suggested. Alright, I'll try both. One of them has to work! thank you guys. -
My gsd is a year and 9 months old and I swear he's still filling out. SOME dogs, not all, but SOME... i have heard, can grow up to the 3yo mark. I'm not sure whether that is true or not but that's hat I have heard. I have also heard that gsd's (and larger dogs im assuming) grow in height up until a year to 15 months and then they start filling out until they are 2 (or 3)... Again, I could be wrong... but at 8 months? I would be surprised if your dog stopped growing now. my girl is also 8 months old and she has a lot more growing to do (Steve checked her growth plates).

You'd be better off insisting he leaves her bones alone. I don't allow my dogs to monster each other for food and they know it. How do I that? Normally what i do is say 'Max' in my stern voice and he looks at me and then leaves Jenna alone... but sometimes he just doesn't listen. That's when I go over and try to intervene. Jenna doesn't like him stealing her bones either but she knows hes top dog and eventually (after a lot of baring her teeth but not making a noise) just lets him have it. Neither of them hurt each other to get it because jenna just ends of giving up. I hate seeing Max take stuff of her because I think she is entitled to it as much as he is. ESPECIALLY if she got it first. What would you suggest I do? Feed treats in their crates. Or one inside and the other outside. Don't give him a chance to take her treats away. What do you do when he doesn't listen? Let him have his way? If he doesn't listen.. you go over and make him go away. Ok. Ill try that tonight. I only just recently got them crates and haven't started the crate training process yet so I will have to read some of K9 pro's training ideas and will incorporate that into it. Thank you. -
No dog in car, no thread. It has a lot to do with the dog in the car. And that's a fair point Although my intention WAS just about whether or not the guy should have been charged. Not to start up another debate on dogs in cars. lol

If a cause of death isn't obvious or needs to be put beyond doubt, then this is how you proceed. A young fit? dog left in a car on a mild day is an unlikely candidate for death by heat stress. If it wasn't that, then facts need to be established before charges can be laid. I'd have thought asking whether or not a necropsy was performed would have been part of any follow up. The facts are that thousands of dogs spend thousands of hours in cars every year and very very few of them come to grief outside of summer months. Of course "dog waits in car for owner without incident" stories don't sell papers. Asking about an autopsy isn't part of the follow up unless there was some indiciation that the dog DIDNT die from heat stress and died from something else aside from what was stated in the first report. For eg. Man left dog in car and dog died from heat stress. and the follow up would be Man that left dog in car with dog dying of heat stress will not be charged. If something was said to indicate that maybe the dog DIDNT die of heat stress then thats when one would ask about the necropsy (I would've said autopsy because that's what I thought it was ) Follow ups can be annoying things. I followed up on whether or not charges were being laid on the man, not whether or not the dog died from heat stress or not. Does that make sense? And I don't think the article actually said anything about heat stress did it? I thought it just said the dog was distressed? I'm not sure.

Im so sorry to hear this and I can imagine you would be quite distressed. I agree with the others - the first thing I thought about when reading your post was 'vet'. Go the vet because if worst comes to worst then he might need to be put on a drip to get some sort of fluids and nutrients into him... (I don't know whether a drip provides nutrients - pardon my ignorance on that matter!) And he does look skinny - you can see it from the photos. Again, I think your first point of call needs to be the vet. Also, he is probably lethargic and exhausted after exercise because he hasn't eaten anything. When exercising for such long periods of time and then not eating can exhaust you because you aren't eating anything therefore you aren't getting any energy into your systems which means when exercising, you are burning off the energy that you have stored. Does that make sense? Basically it means - I would stop exercising for the time being, until he starts eating again, because I would say the exercise is what is making him lethargic. Is he drinking water?

And you allow this? Haha Oh ffs. No I don't 'allow' him to bully her. She absolutely LOVES it. she sneaks up when he isnt watching and then they do zoomies around the backyard for ages. Then she runs back down the stairs again and he waits for her... then she sneaks back up and they start wrestling again. She absolutely loves it. Perhaps my post wasn't that clear... he leaves her alone when she needs to go to the toilet etc. the rest of the time while they're up there they are either waiting for the horse to walk past or playing. Nope it wasn't. Read the bits in bold above. No mention of play behaviour at all. You painted a picture of a dog behaving territorially towards your other dog and denying her access to parts of your yard. Forgive me for not being a mind reader. Lol fair point fair point. I forgive you! No, my post wasn't clear at all - I apologise!! But there is no way in hell I would let max treat her like that if she didn't enjoy it. He does try and steal her bones... he will actually go over to her, take her bone, walk a few steps and then drop it and walk on... if he can't have it - no one can... But whenever I am around and I see this, I take it off them both. -
What is a necropsy? Is that an autopsy for dogs? Yes Ok. Is it common for dogs to get necropsy's after they pass away? Or is it only in animal neglact/cruelty/unknown cases?

Actually thats incorrect. I work for the paper that covered this story, locally. And whilst following it up I was curious to know what other people thought. It just so happens that it had to do with a dog in a car. I'm not saying 'I told you so', because I don't like being that kind of person who rubs it in when she is right. And apparently I wasn't right in my other thread so why would I want to bring all that s**t up again? I was merely asking what people thought about the PERSON in this incident. NOT THE DOG. This thread has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact the dog was left in the car (RIP) but the fact that the man didnt get charged. No matter what he had've done, whether it had anything to do with a dog in a car or not, I STILL would've asked the question. And I pulled up an old story because I was interested? If you don't care then why bother commenting? The reason the 'old story' was brought up was because I was working on a follow up story yesterday and hadn't seen the story previously - so not knowing how old it was.

There is no guarantee that getting another dog will make your current one less clingy. You might end up with two clingy dogs! I'd be strongly recommending you get a male, not another female. It lowers the risk of any friction between two dogs in a household. Golden Retriever or not, your current girl is still a dog and pack issues are a possibility. I agree. That is the reason we got a female instead of another male. Max CAN be quite dominant... however he is willing to admit defeat... but when it comes to his backyard... you better watch out... he 'beats the crap out of' Jenna... she isn't allowed up the stairs to the grassy part of the backyard unless she needs to go to the toilet. Max will actually sit there and lie in wait... hes not aggressive towards her... but he is EXTREMELY territorial. i've never seen such a territorial dog.. so we knew if we got another male it would be a very big problem... I always suggest getting the opposite sex because you are less likely to encounter problems! The only problem you'll have is instead of saying 'good girls' or 'good boys' you'll have to say 'good girl, good boy' which can because a pain in the ass!!!!! lol -
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/man-...9-1226026798274 A MAN is being questioned by police after his dog died as a result of being left in a car in Sydney's inner- west this morning. Police officers from Leichhardt responded to reports a dog was in distress inside a vehicle on Grove Street at Birchgrove. When police arrived the three-year-old Labrador "Ella" was unconscious in the back seat of the Toyota Prius. After smashing the window to gain entry into the vehicle, the officers poured cold water on the dog and tried to resuscitate it. The officers took the dog to a nearby vet where it was pronounced dead. The 61-year-old male owner of the dog is assisting police with their inquiries. It is expected he will be charged with animal cruelty. I have just contacted the LAC and asked whether or not this guy is going to be charged... they said he wasn't - that is was purely an accident and that he was a big dog lover... What do you guys think? Should he have been charged? Personally I think he should have - maybe just a fine or something. Its all well and good that it was an accident and I'm sure he was very distraught and my heart goes out to him... BUT... the dog did pass away... so I think he should just get a fine or something... I don't know - what do you guys think???

I just remembered... I was walking Max around the block one day and I was walking past a dental surgery... There was this very old cattle dog that wandered out of the parking lot and started following me and max... the dog kept trying to hump max and max was freaking out... at one point he actually threw himself onto the road (he was on a short lead) but managed to pull me almost onto the road with him and rolled on his back... We were on a very main road and I kept having to pull him back off the road because he was trying to get away from this dog. The dog was very friendly but max didnt like it trying to hump him so he kept trying to get away from him by jumping and rolling everywhere... ultimately rolling and jumping onto the road a few times. Problem was - this dog didn't have an owner and just kept following us. Lucky I was close to home - I went in and grabbed a lead and put it on the dog, then called the owners and told them he was here with me. it wasn't a nice experience because there was no immediate way I could get max away from this dog.

dogsrawesome - you have an amazing talent! I wish I could draw like that! The only thing I can draw is stick figures! lol - and funnily enough im quite good at drawing houses? LOL If you go onto the thread 'black dogs bad luck' (or something - I cant even remember the name of my own thread!!! lol) there are pictures of max and jenna on there (purebred gsd) you can use them as a go-by for your drawings and if you do by any chance I would love to get a copy of the picture you take of the drawings!! -

Go the dragons!!!!!!! I would love to get my dogs dragons coats!

I had a friend from the dog park who said he got his dog from a pet shop - the pet shop gave him papers saying he was a purebred gsd... it was not a purebred gsd - it looked more like a purebread dobe.

The dog is in the wrong if it injures the other dog.... whether or not if it was provoked. However in saying tgat, if the dog was provoked then the attacked dog is also in tge wrong... but if the attacked dog doesnt injure the attacking dog then the attacking dog is held responsible...... if that makes sense!
