  1. Yep, gotcha, we are training for tracking (although we won't be trialling due to isolation ATM), very similar situation where tracking trials are quite different to the real life situations, most dogs even with inexperienced handlers like me lol, could track for tracking trials.
  2. Well i'm sure other breeds have been down this road, maybe if more people were interested in the working Dobe, it's abilities can be improved. Like Rottnbullies, I hope someone can resurect it's capabilities. Sorry not to highjack Doberwatch, but how different is Schutzhund to a police/ defence dog training?
  3. I have a show line Dobe so can't comment on good working lines really, just wondering why in so many working breeds of dogs the ANKC standard (which show lines breed for) doesn't include or prioritise working ability- shouldn't their beauty be in their suitability for what the breed was designed for? I am so suprised that Dobes aren't considered good working dogs, what the hell are they for then?
  4. Sniper= Sniper diaper windscreen wiper, Snipey Snipey Snoo noo, Slobadan Molosovich
  5. Yep, he will not be going anywhere, right now he is on lead sleeping near me.
  6. Thanks, yes when he was outside and not on lead he ran at the chickens and didn't look sore, but maybe it was only because he was excited at the time. My son does the miraculous recovery upon entering doctor/ emergency room/ clinic nearly every time, especially when they bring out the jelly beans. I will try ice on his shoulder, though not totally sure where he is sore
  7. Thanks, I will confine him over the weekend and will take him to the vets on Monday if no improvement, but I would like see if it's just muscle soreness, I have rang the vets they have advised to confine him but otherwise can't tell me anything without seeing him. I shouldn't have been letting him outside by himself I know :D , and I will go out with him on a lead until it improves. I will try and keep him occupied for the weekend and see how it goes.
  8. Hi everyone, my 19 week old Dobe had unintentional rough play with another puppy three days ago, the usual zoomies and running into each other that puppies do resulted in a big stack for Sniper. He is limping slightly since the day after, not straight away though. When he stands or sits he holds the sore leg out to the side a bit but still touching the ground. I have checked his pads for cuts, checked the range of movement in that leg compared to the other front leg, used pressure along the leg to try and find any painful areas, observed for heat or swelling and Sniper does not react to anything, but he is not using it 100% My feeling is that it is his shoulder due to the way he holds it when he sits or stands. Even though we have been confining him most of the day, he has been out free ranging in the yard to go to the toilet and has been running around. so my questions are As we are 220km from our vet, how urgently should he go? Should I not allow him out of confinement in the house and crate except to go to the toilet on his lead? Can it be assumed by the late onset of the pain, that it is muscular and not skeletal? If so should I ice it?
  9. Thats true, given human nature, but I personally have made numerous posts on other topics related to how wonderful my puppies breeder was, but I don't think a single reply has been posted to say "thats great, me too ect" It is a hot topic for DOL atm anyway :D
  10. I used Dogsvic's guide to put one together http://www.dogsvictoria.org.au/Content.asp?ID=160
  11. jacqui, I know I already heard that on the dobermann thread, but still.... !
  12. Yes I get the same thing with my brown/rust dobe, apparently they only come in black/tan so my dog is a kelpie x!!
  13. MalteseLuna, even though you have not cited any of your references, lets say your argument is true..... The point is in this instance, whatever these dogs are, the chances of somebody actually being interested to go to remote WA and remove them for genetic testing to determine their purity is slim, wouldn't you agree? Far more chance that drawing attention to them will result in somebody (Parks, farmer, police) destroying them, which was my point. The OP was looking for advice as to what to do as they appeared in poor condition (though yet to see photos), getting into a theological debate on the dingos importance, purity, location ect is really OT and far from conclusive at this point.
  14. I've heard balloons, but I would be worried that my dog would eat the balloon. Maybe put his poo in the hole before you fill it up?
  15. I think some people have got into an arguement that is not really related to topic. What is likely to happen to these dingos or hybrids if authorities are involved, what is the best outcome for them?
  16. http://www.wadingo.com/HOME.html I read a study on the genetics of dingos on this link that keiraandpheonix posted. very interesting and rings true for my observations I live in remote NT SE of Alice Springs with a local population of 80 people, similar to remote WA and I do not think that these dogs are any more likely to be pure because of this. Most Aboriginal communities are in these desert areas, and they do not practise desexing or restrain or contain their dogs (of which they vastly outnumber people in many cases). Any body who likes dogs would probably be disgusted by the camp dogs conditions and they do wander a lot to find food. I consider it very sad that the Dingo's purity is all but gone, female dingos only have 1 heat a year and dingos are much more selective in their eating habits. They suppress feral cat and rabbit numbers. Hybrids do not offer the same environmental services, they will eat smaller prey like native mammals. With the subject of this topic, maybe wait until after summer to see if they leave the mine site. The pure dingos I have seen wild are very lean ie hips ribs and some backbone visable. If they are eating grasshoppers they will do ok, and they may just leave when the grasshoppers run out.
  17. My puppy has just had the last C5, Vet said do again in a year then every three years or titre testing.
  18. I was poking my puppy in the ribs saying "look Sniper, look at what they can do!" It was a great show, much better to see great working dogs than fluff pieces about a certain vet and some silly clients choosing puppies!
  19. Oh the beds you win are part of their current promotion - buy a big bag of food and get one free. The beds are pretty small But a years supply of food would be pretty cool Loved the program though and great to see dogs at work! Hee hee hee! Poor puppy, so hard to get comfy when you're big
  20. Yep, so stupid- you could see she was one of those "now darling don't do that" types. I was thinking the same thing about sedation and my OH and I thought it was a good idea the dog was readmitted as the owner was not really up to his post op care.
  21. Just be aware that pure bred dingos are extremely rare, and you are more likely to see a dingo/domestic hybrid. The hybrids can look almost identical to a purebred dingo with as far as i'm aware, little for the average person to go by for identification. Also, if there is Aboriginal Communities near by the chance they are hybrids increases. In terms of the dogs body condition, Dingos are naturally very lean, maybe you could get a photo on here? I imagine that it is not very easy to provide them with assistance given your remote location, unfortunately sometimes the most humane thing is for them to be destroyed if they are suffering. It is important that you don't feed them as they are dangerous when they lose fear of people. I would recommend checking with Parks and Wildlife service, if they do cull it will prob be carried out with more sensitivity than what might otherwise happen to them.
  22. So frustrating, and the SHP applies to children and pregnant bellies, although that would have to be called SBR! I wanted to slap some people who touched my baby belly- would just walk up out of nowhere! Now with Sniper I have to protect him because if he reacts badly to a SHP it will be his fault. I guess he needs to become more tolerant to people approaching him, but it would be better for the general public to be more savvy.
