  1. I can't believe she hasn't turned up what about the other beddlington that went missing from Alice at the same time, have they been found?
  2. I own a dobermann, and although they could fit the bill for you, I'm inclined to agree with the suggestions of Kelpie and Standard Poodle. At my dog club there is a standard poodle who is fantastic at everything, and Kelpies are such a hardy breed and certainly seem to do well at dog sports
  3. My dog has eaten a few mouthfuls out of the bag with no ill effect...... it does seem to encourage him to dig up whatever the blood and bone has been on. Although after a week it might not have such a strong smell. I think of dogs and gardens as a poor combination, therefore at our house my dog has a yard with lawn and some spikey plants he won't eat and is not allowed access to the garden proper
  4. One of my dogs was bitten on the neck by a western brown snake last year and collapsed maybe 5 minutes after. We did not see her get bitten, but she was sniffing in a bush and then collapsed, lost control of her bowel, had convulsions, difficulty breathing but these symptoms all passed after another 5 minutes. She then got up and seemed drowsy but ok, but unfortunately died at the vets 24 hours later from internal bleeding. If you missed the initial symptoms, but had a dog that was not behaving normally I would take them to the vet anyway, there is so many things that could be wrong. The bite itself on my dog was almost impossible to see and she was a black and tan Dobe with a short coat. The next day the bite area had swollen but it did take some time for that to happen.
  5. Tracking Club Vic My puppy is from a member and they have beginner workshops in Autumn every year that run over a weekend. I think also many of the members would be happy to help you get started by having you tag along with them when they train.
  6. I think many councils consider dogs not to be under effective control on a long lead, but really if thats the case its no where near as bad as the guys behaviour. Report it to the police and the rangers My only concern is if you run into him again, will that cause issues, I hate to say this but maybe you should change where you take your pup at least for the short term.
  7. I have a skykennel for puppies, a bit pricey compared to collapsable crates, but much darker for sleeping in, and can't be destroyed from the inside, although someone has chewed some of the plugs from the outside
  8. that last one and the turtle are hilarious!
  9. Yes, my nearly fully grown dobe hasn't jumped our low fence between backyard and front or learnt to jump up into the ute, he just does a fairly graceless scramble in. I think like with your dog, he hasn't worked out that he is quite big enough to jump these things. My last dog was a fantastic high jumper which we encouraged, but learnt our lesson when she scaled any six foot fence we put her behind, so I'm happy to have a big tough dobe that needs to be lifted into the car
  10. I wouldn't worry too much at this point. It's pretty common for puppies to be 'in your face'. They are babies and they believe everyone will love them. The best way for them to learn how to behave is experience. As they get older they typically grow out of the impossibly exuberant greetings and calm down a little. Kivi was about 10 months old when he started thinking twice about approaching every single dog and loving on them. Erik was about 14 months. I got pretty excited and proud of them when they started making sensible decisions about other dogs. It's a coming of age. Before that they will just approach every dog and they need you to keep an eye on them and hover over them and stop them from approaching some dogs that are giving them the eye and growling. That puts my mind at rest a bit, my 14 month old dog is exceptionaly rude and has been bitten several times by other dogs for staring and getting up in their face (this happened after against my better judgement I let him off lead at a training session) I try and stop him from staring all the time by distracting him but I feel like the day will never come when he will be less confrontational. Maybe when he gets older, as he wasn't well socialised until he was about 9 months due to our remote location, he will get a bit better. I was pretty excited when Sniper achieved an off lead recall recently in the bush, albeit without any other more interesting distractions around
  11. I've flown my previous Dobe Syd-Townsville Then Cairns-Darwin then Alice Springs with no problems (3 separate occasions with Virgin and Qantas). We had our own crate which was a sky kennel, there were no major problems except Trinity poo'd in her crate and we had to clean that up before we could put her and her things in the car. My dad recommended fasting her the day before but she still had some in reserve The vet in townsville prescribed sedatives but I don't think it calmed her down much and they are more likely to overheat that way because they don't stand up and pant. We also wrote her name on her crate.
  12. I know someone who watches that show religeously, and they want to get a chocolate lab like Scooby Doo (I didn't point out to them that scooby doo is a great dane )
  13. Its always poo for Snipes, although he has eaten rocks once while he was tied up next to our car. I only knew this because he threw them all up later on that day. His sire ate a sewing needle and a eye of a teddy bear and had two lots of surgery I believe.
  14. I have heard of dogs sniffing out cane toads on the WA NT border, great to hear of more dogs at work in the community. I wonder why they don't employ a guardian breed to actually protect the penguins?
  15. Great Idea Sheena, tell your sister to put me down for one when she makes one :D
  16. Hi, just PM'd you. I agree with Jacqui835, they can wreak havoc (like many dogs) when they have the opportunity and I too go through many dog toys, but they balance it out by being velcro dogs and big goof balls most of the time. Health is a big issue but a good breeder screens for Cardio Myopathy and Von Willebrands which are the biggies. Wobblers is less of a genetic thing and harder to avoid. If you are in Brissy you should try and go to one of the Dobermann Club Shows to meet some, because all Dobe owners think their dogs are perfect, so maybe we are a little biased ;)
  17. Oh we had that happen too- smart alec kids pony learnt to barge through the tape and break it and let everyone out
  18. I use electric fencing for my horses, and when Sniper has started to jump up on fences I have used my electric fencing. He only gets zapped once and never tried again. I did feel very mean after because he was very scared and went to his crate for the rest of the day, however I have zapped myself plenty of times and I know it doesn't hurt much, and like you say better that than running away and having an accident. He was fine the next day and stayed well clear of the fence and I haven't used it again. I don't know how much dog specific hidden fencing is, but you can buy the horse things for about $200 for a basic set up with a battery operated energizer.
  19. I add spirulina powder to my raw mix- gives it that herbivore stomach contents taste and smell he likes it has toned down his cow and horse poo eating too.
  20. Sniper (Dobermann) is insured with PIA, its the first year and have to renew soon but had one claim (for ringworm treatment) and it was all good. I have the $500 excess per condition with cover up to $13000 annually for injury and illness. For this my premium is about $300 I think, but I will see if it goes up for the second year.
  21. I'm sure others with more experience than me will have some ideas, but I would have the lead on more than 30mins if she is not getting over it, and maybe hold onto it the whole time rather than letting her play with it. Play with her toys on the lead or just sit around holding onto the lead, or walk her to her dinner with the lead. I think the main thing is don't reward her for not coming by patting and talking to her, just ignore her until she stops resisting and then praise with food, play or whatever floats her boat. I had my pup from 3 months and he already walked on the lead, but while he was inside I often had him on lead in the house walking around with me while I did things. Good luck
