  1. ...and why don't the council or RSPCA do the right thing and use a firearm to end that suffering right now? Allowing this suffering to go on, once it is known, THAT is cruel, in my book. Generally the police do have that permission. They can't discharge a firearm in town but they could take the dog outside of the town and do it. That was the problem, they couldn't catch the dog to get it out of the community
  2. I have opted not to post photos of this as it is visually disturbing and also I am not in a position to identify this community or the dog publicly.... A report was made to police by a local government employee of a dog seriously injured and needing to be destroyed. The dog had been attacked by another which resulted in the dog loosing all of the skin around its neck and one ear. Amazingly the dog is still alive a fortnight later, the dog itself was signed over to the council by its owner to be destroyed sometime prior to the dog being attacked, but they are unable to hire someone to manage camp dogs including destroying unclaimed dogs. The police were unable to catch the dog because of concern relating to using a catch pole on its injured neck, so it is still wandering around the community until vets visit in April when no doubt it will be PTS if it can be caught. There is also a horse which has lost an eye one way or another and is still in a paddock with muck running out of its eye, another horse has chronic founder with seriously deformed hooves. Basically the dog will suffer the pain of a large untreated wound, by some miracle survive, only to be PTS when someone can manage to catch it. There are reports that many dogs are eaten by other dogs because they are starving, perhaps this dog was a victim of such an attack. Some people are worried that the dogs may turn on children or weak adults although perhaps if they fed their dogs the situation would be different. In other communities I have seen day old foals whose brumby mother have been chased away, being ridden by children until they collapse and die. The vet visits cost nothing to the individual (and they often hide their dogs from the vet to avoid them getting desexed) Imagine if someone in any other state or territory failed to seek veterinary treatment for such an injury, yet here there will be no prosecution against the council or the previous owners If only the lerger part of Australian population could see what goes on up here, its so disgusting...
  3. Where are the manners here? Or does that not apply because it is a faceless net forum? There are parents on this forum, and some people have suggested having children is some disgusting primitive compulsion and that any parent commenting on here is only led by their raging hormones! Some have gone on to say exactly whats on their mind when they see children of which much of that is pretty vile, but only IMO I don't think that is good manners it can actually be quite insulting to have someone you love more than anything referred to in that way. I think that is why there is such passionate arguement in this forum, there is a lot of hurtful things being said.
  4. Neither do I, when it is done thoughtfully and is not driven by profit or whim. Thanks everyone, yes the profit is what makes the distinction between this sort of cross breeding and the "oodle" breeders. Thats what I was wondering but also, out of all the breeds that are recognised is there really no breed that does the job already. Ridgebacks is one breed that immediatly springs to mind
  5. Agree. The irony amuses me. Now people are assuming that people who don't like kids must have been mistreated as children. Interesting. If that is in relation to my comments what I meant was can you imagine being subjected to a negative attitude as a child because some random person thinks you are smelly, boring, loud based purely on your age ..... read into that what you will, I made no assumptions And as far as how I feel about mature members of my species, I wouldn't generalise about that just like I wouldn't generalise about children. Each individual taken on their own merit, some are a little more trying than others
  6. I respect the right people have to chose whether or not to have children but it is upsetting to hear children described so appalingly by some people posting on here. Could you imagine when you were a child if someone described you that way? When I read comments complaining about children being loud, rude, talking to much or god forbid trying to engage an adult in conversation, I wonder how these people were treated as children themselves and also how they behaved because I'm sure with an ounce of honest perspective they would recall being some if not all of these things as a child. By all means don't have children, I respect that right and you shouldn't have to explain your choices to anyone, but some people really should examine how healthy it is to think in such negative terms about every immature member of your own species!
  7. My husband is a keen hunter, and I was reading his shooting magazine out of interest and boredom the other day and noticed there were articles on breeding pig dogs. Obviously they aren't purebred let alone pedigree but they are trying to develop a standard and there is even the Bull Arab where the enthusiasts are trying to get the breed recognised by the AKC and have developed a standard that when I read it sounded very much like the standard for any other pedigree dog. I just wonder what other people think about this? Who gets to decide if a type of dog can become a breed, is there a pedigree dog breed that fits the bill for hunting or is it people just liking to experiment?
  8. Bones is gorgeous!! Love the name too. Simi is looking as cute as ever. It is pup's 7 week birthday today and I got the email this morning telling me which of the pups is mine.. so.. NOW I CAN POST PICTURES!! This is her with her litter mates, a few days, 3 weeks and 5 weeks :) So pleased. I loved all the pups but from the very beginning I had her picked out in my heart. Just had a feeling :) She is beautiful, I've never seen a baby bullie before, they are so cute! How are you going with names for her?
  9. They don't have to be animal psychologists, but basic traning would be beneficial. It might be within their rights, but I think this action should be reserved for extreme situations and I diagree that this situation falls into that category. I don't disagree that this is needed but police already have many things to learn in their cadetship or traineeship. it is of little use offerng animal behaviour as a supplementary course for some either, as who knows which general duties police person would respond to an animal problem I would imagine that learning a automatic response to such a threat (again I must reiterate that I have not seen the footage) such as trained for the use of deadly force may take longer than GOVERNMENT are willing to allow or facilitate. I hate cop bashing, and at the end of the day people must remember that they are public servants and therefore if you don't like how they operate voice your opinion to governent.
  10. I can't watch the video, but as someone privy to an Australian police officers training they are not animal psychologists and they are well within their rights and the rights of the law to destroy an animal that attacks or menaces another animal. Yes the owners are at fault but to shoot the owners would be undue force! If you don't like it either way, you should loby your federal member for parliament
  11. Its a repeat mating, this will be the third litter and the puppies in the last two litters were predominately brown boys and there have only been 3 girls in total; 2 in the first litter and 1 in the second. Hopefully its not zero in the third, I'm trying not to think about names or otherwise get excited
  12. lol! Um is he in a pair of dropped pants?! Very cute boy, I bet he will love having another body to curl up with, someone I know with Iggys and whippets has lots of photos of them in a pile in one bed
  13. My dog is now 18 months by the way, incase it sounded like his mum was pumping out puppies!
  14. Photo please! I love the slug phase This is my boy as a biggish slug at 5 weeks, we are hopefully getting a little sister for him soon. The puppy will actually be a full sister to our boy and his mum is about 3 weeks away from whelping but doesn't throw many girls so we are waiting with
  15. THIS About 8 years ago the remains of greyhounds were found in the forest near where I lived. They had been decapitated so they couldn't be id from their tatoos, I just couldn't believe someone could do that for the sake of money.
  16. That would be great, because you need a lot of availabel space to run a tracking trial, and there are potential safety issues like snakes. How would it get up and running here?
  17. Guys!!!!! I have been stressing over what to wear to my second show ever, and now I am even more worried- I have a brown dobe and was thinking light coloured dress pants but should I wear a skirt? What shoes do you wear, runners seem to clash with skirts????
  18. That's not even comparing apples to oranges . . . more like comparing bindi-burrs to bricks :D For most of us automobiles are a necessary evil. Now wandering cats . . . or do you drive to work in you cat? If automobiles that were not locked in the garage climbed fences, got into fights, went feral, bred prolifically, and crapped in gardens, I think people would demand that they get locked up. I'm loving the mental image I have right now.... think herbie gone bad. Chubbsie, seriously what are you doing on dol, you just seem to be spoiling for a fight?
  19. I think he is very considerate of the dogs fate considering he was in no way at fault for what happened to him.... hopefully the owner of the dogs has learnt a lesson from this
  20. I use PIA and while they paid my first claim for a skin condition last year they then increased my premium by about $100 when it came to renewal. I now pay around $450 for cover to $15000 and there is a $300 excess. I'm not too happy with them, but haven't gone to the trouble of looking around yet either.
  21. I got told when I bought my JRT from a pet shop that he was a Parsons (he was probably neither)
  22. Oh Yes, I can vouch for this method, it paid huge dividends when we were travelling so our dobe would toilet exactly where we wanted. I also get a giggle when my husband walks around with our dobe going "do wees"
  23. we've been there too! I can just imagine that a puddle or nugget on the floor would be very inviting for little hands to rub everywhere too. Its probably easier to keep the puppy in a pen or crate, and be vigilant about a toileting routine for your puppy than to confine your son? I used to have the bobbely things that go over door handles so I could keep my son in his room if need be, I don't know if that would work.
