Dogs And Growing Grass With Success
BC Crazy replied to koalathebear's topic in General Dog Discussion
Me too! Looking forward to the feedback. We look like re-turfing again this spring for the 2nd time in as many years. We are through to dirt 'again'. I love a nice green lawn for my furry kids but it is really hard to maintain with 2 bc's running around on it all the time 'doin zoomies' together. -
Poor Roy & child. Very unfortunate accident. Excited child & very excited puppy, puppy gets a fright & hurt with child on top of him, lashes out in the moment. BC love,I agree with persephone here. Teach your children how to play with Roy. golden rule no. 1, never to turn their back on Roy, especially when playing. I never do with Stella even now at 8 months. Learn't that lesson the hard way.Nearly lost my nose before she was taught how to behave even when getting excited. They are unpredictable. And if your kids are taught, sure have a good play with Roy but only for X amount of time. Don't let Roy become over excited. Finish the game before Roy is ready to & tell him "good game", praise him. This are just a few things I have picked up.Other Dolers will be a wealth of info for you. Really glad you are fully supervising your littley's. Things can get out of control in a second. You certainly must have your hands full with small children as well. I am flat out with 2 furry kids

Oh dear old girl, run free Chantie. sweet heart.

RIP little ones. So sad . Hope mum pulls through & you know, you did your very best for them. Doesn't take away the 'why' though does it? Thoughts are with you.

I am not sure as I remember only ever using sulphur in powder form & it was from the local chemist but that was about 15 years, don't know if you can still get it though.

Hi Olivebaby, Stella was a very fierce resource guarder when I got her at 12 weeks but only with her chic wings. When I gave her her very first wing, she snatched it off me & when I went near her she bared her teeth, ears flattened, growled & charged at me. She meant business. I was very upset about it but in her eyes she thought I was going to take her precious wing.I stepped back (big mistake) should of stood my ground but like you,I was frightened. In every other way she was great, could do/take anything out of her mouth e.t.c. As I had lost my confidence momentarily OH took over her 'chic wing' time. With advice from very helpful Doler's & Stella's breeder OH played the 'give & take' game all the time. He would have 2 wings, give her 1, then swap with her or he'd walk up to her & take it off her then give it straight back. with praise. There was never a sign of aggression again. Thankfully this method worked really well for us & we still play the game occasionally just to keep her on her toes.Hope this was of some help. You know this doesn't mean that Olive is a BAD puppy.Just protecting something she really treasures. Having said that it is not something to be taken lightly as it can be very dangerous if left to continue. If you are not confident or unsure, get professional help ASAP. Good luck, keep us posted

That's a BIG NO from me. Had the similar thing happen to me when I rescued a BC years ago who had been extremely abused, said NO then too. IMO if you can let a do go for whatever circumstances you don't deserve to visit the animal & it is too upsetting for the dog as well.

Rufus & Coco, Super Skin & Coat comes in a powder form & its got Vit.A Omega 3,6 & 9 & other stuff in it & I just sprinkle a bit on their dinner & I don't use nearly as much as they say to on the container. I have always used it & I always get complimented on my kids coats, beautiful & shinny. I buy it online from Vetnpet.Hope this was of help.

No worries.Yeah, thats what happened to me. Poor Sonny looked like the moths had been at him Lucky he is not a show dog. Got to be really careful & go slowly. Comb & part the coat first seemed to work best for me. Otherwise it will just grab the top coat & once it is gone, whoop's !! Good luck.

I use Black Hawk kibble. A small chic wing or carcess & raw roo mince, human grade. Flaxseed oil & Rufus & Coco's Skin & coat additive daily.

I have a size 18 coat king for my BC & I used it when he was losing his puppy coat, around his pants e.t.c they are really good but got to make sure the coat is clean, dry & groomed before you use it otherwise it will grab at the coat & take a chunk of top coat which is not a good look Sonny has a huge coat long & very thick in spots. I don't need to use the coat king these days. I do groom him daily though, maybe thats why.

Very funny photo Love it !!!! Yep, if you want the best seat in the house, move the dog. LOL

I only ever play fetch with my girl after a long walk so she is warmed up, on sand at the beach. Always throw the ball along the ground, never in the air & only 6 or so times at the most. Then I bury the ball & she has to find it. Which she just loves. Then ball game is over. Too stressing on their joints otherwise. My older boy just loves me to brake up stick's into tiny pieces & throw them around the I tell him to "find them" & he goes around scenting till he picks up every single one, chews it up, spits it out, onto the next one. Might take him an hour but he will do that all day if I would let him, his 'happy tail' is swishing the whole time. totally focused.

Saw this dogs with the shark thing on the news the other night, Bloody idiot owners . What are they thinking !!! & they seemed to find this funny. The dogs don't know the dangers they are facing. Like there is going to be a nice ending to this behaviour.

I love the Antler Chew's. My 2 chew away for ages on them. They are pretty safe too. Don't seem to splinter. I used to give mine pigs ears until Sonny nearly choked to death on one,OH had to get a pair of plyers & retrieve a piece of ear out of his throat they are banned from our house now. The only other chew my lot get are vegetarian pigs ears or the Antlers. Not worth the risk.

I tell my furry kids lots how much they mean to me & how I just adore them sooooo very much cause you just don't ever know what the future holds. thought's are with you GayleK, & to all those that have lost their very special loved ones.

What a fitting tribute to a beautiful partnership. I had trouble reading the last few lines cause my eyes were filled with tears. Just goes to show you you can never underestimate a Border Collie. They are just amazing, beautiful, loyal & very intelligent. R.I.P. Pretty Miss Emma, run free lovely girl.

Years ago I rescued a BC who was almost covered in hot spots caused by allergies from being totally flea ridden. He had no coat on him apart from on his head. He had chewed himself to pieces. Poor, beautiful boy. Brought tears to my eyes when I first saw him in such an horrific state. I mixed sulphur & molasses together & put it all over every hot spot & he would lick it all off eventually. I repeated this twice a week for 3 months. Very messy but the results amazed me. All the hot spots healed & he began to grow the most magnificent coat. From memory I think I got the sulphur from the chemist. My dear old dad suggested I try this remedy as he used it years ago on greyhounds with allergy problems. I liked the fact that it didn't hurt "Redman" he actually loved the molasses. it also helped him to gain weight as he was severely under weight at just 14.5 kg at 18 months old. I must admit I was reluctant at first but the results spoke for themselves.

Very cute & he doesn't even wreck them I agree way too cute to get into trouble !!

The same thing happened to me when I lost Redman my rescue BC at 14.5. I had a dream I was playing with him for what seemed like most of the night about a week after he had passed. He was only young though & running around very happy & full of beans. When I woke & realized I'd been dreaming I felt like I really had just been with him, having a great game of tug & running with him. I wasn't sad, just all warm in my heart. RIP my beautiful boy.

My rescue BC,"Redman" was 14 when I noticed he was starting to act very strangely. He was getting confused in familiar territory. e.g. he would walk into the corner of a room & just stand there with his head in the corner till I went over & turned him around then he would look up at me like 'thanks mum' & off he would go again. He was deaf by this stage & arthritis has set in. Dementia was by far the most troubling for me though I think. To see my beautiful, very intelligent BC boy forget where his water bowl was or come across him stuck in the corner of the lounge room was heart breaking. He passed away 6 months later. That was 3 years ago RIP My special boy.

Agree with persephone , Stella has always carried a soft toy in her mouth pretty much everywhere she goes, she is also a toy sucker, when she is tired. She retrieved pretty much anything I threw right from 12 weeks of age without me teaching her, was just instinct I think. While Sonny my other BC stands by & watches like 'watever' he will chase but if you want it back he looks at me like 'you best be getting that' !! Not the least bit interested, but he is not a toy carrier. Bring out the soccer ball & Sonny will chase it all day while Stella will just go lay down with her 'sucky' toy. They are all different.

Ever so sorry for your loss. Thoughts are with you at this most difficult time. R.I.P. Gypsy

Yes, my 2 are mudd runners as well. Rain, bring it on they say !!!! Good on you for taking your pup out in the rain. Honestly, I got my 2 home yesterday from a beach run in the pouring rain, they had a riot, while I got a wet bum. That's what owning a dog is all about. When we got back & lifted up their top coat & underneath near their skin was still completely dry. BC's have a double coat & any one that has one will know it takes a lot of water to penetrate their coats. Any double coated dog. I toweled their top coat off, give them a chic carcess & they slept the arvo away with a towel over them on their bed's on our deck, under cover & totally content.Got the life alright. Maybe that silly lady needs to get one!
