Congratulations, you must have worked hard to get a fenced park for dogs. Dogs and their owners, are on the lowest rung of the totem pole where councils are concerned. Hope the funds come thru asap. Please post photos when the area is created.

freundhund replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
And I also handed out a poo bag to a couple of young girls with their pitbulX, as it after it poo'd right near the children's play equipment. They also were not prepared to pick up the poo. These are the sort of people that make it sooooooooo hard for the responsilbe dog owners!!!!!!!!!!! -
Idea Weight Through Lifespan Of Gsd's
freundhund replied to buggerme's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi ShelleAnd Shyla I look at the photos of your girl and she is definately a good weight. My own girl at 12 months who is in show condition weighs 23 kilos she is a 57cm bitch. -
I am with Bully, on his/her reply. I have a now 12 month old GSD who I spent the first 6 weeks when she came home sitting outside the local primary school. One note of caution let the teachers know why you are "hanging" around the school with a cute puppy. A lot of schools are very worried about "Stranger danger" . Since then I have sat outside the school, on numerous occasions, I was also invited into the classroom at the begining. (I had introduced myself) and the class every month measured the dog to see how quick she grow. She became a teaching tool, now my girl is basically bombproof with children. Good luck and best wishes for your future puppy.

Morbidly Obese 14kilo Malt
freundhund replied to keetamouse's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am stunned, I have to be honest and say I never, ever thought you could put that much weight on a Maltese! Is it possible to see some photos? How much should a "normal" Maltese weigh? Good luck with getting him to loose weight. -
Idea Weight Through Lifespan Of Gsd's
freundhund replied to buggerme's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Buggerme Please note with the chart you are looking at, it is possibly for American line GSD's, or workingline GSD's or it could be for West German Showlines. If you have questions with regards to weight etc there is a really good GSD forum called GSDWorld you will find a great number of knowledgeable Australian GSD people on there. Good luck for your new puppy in the future. -
To Puppy Class Or Not To Puppy Class?
freundhund replied to RealityBites's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I would never, ever take a puppy to a puppy class again. The lack of knowledge at the 2 I attended with my last to GSD's was unbelievable. One was at a Vet clinic run to promote as far as I could see, buying your food and accessories from the vet and desexing your puppy asap. The instructor/ress had very little knowledge I asked what courses this person had done only to discover they had very little. (I had been told that the person running the class had completed the Delta Course, this was not so) The instructor/ress felt my puppy was aggressive and was attaching the SWF's, when my girl was giving play bows etc. The other puppy school was run privately again supposedly being run by someone with qualifications, and again the person taking the puppy class didn't have the afformentioned qualifications. As well the classes were more designed for SWF's. Talking to other people with slightly larger puppy, they also report the same issues the minute your puppy is the biggest in the class, your puppy is in the wrong!!!!!!!!!! I no longer recommend puppy classes to my puppy buyers. -
As a GSD person, I have to honestly say GSD BUT I have to say that at this stage do you remember puppy teeth and the bouncy behaviour of your puppies when they were you. Can I just remind and stress to you that GSD puppies mouth slightly harder that a Golden Retreiver, this can be off putting to young children. Also either breed will do zoomies and bounce on your children and possibly knock them over, you need to remember that this is why so many dogs end up locked in the backyard with the children staying in the house because they become afraid of the dog! Can I suggest that you talk to some breeders, tell them you are looking at puppies, but you want to make sure that your children will cope with a puppy. Ask if you can bring your children over a few times if it is conveinent with the breeders, I have done this with families getting a young puppy, in fact one family waited 18 months after we started this process as one of their children needed to become more confident around dogs. With my children, I had my GSD's before the children were born and then replaced them (they passed away with age) when the youngest child was 18 months old, I never had a problem but all my dogs had a lot of obedience training. Good luck with which ever breed you decide.

Hi Sway Thanks for letting me know. I rang Jessica, the website will be up and running again over the weekend. Apparently she took it down to do some work on it and is having a problem with the reloading. Thanks for looking. Cheers Freundhund

I have heard a number of people have been looking for help to import or export semen and to store semen locally. Jessica Kada who is a GSD person has opened her own company to do this, Jess has had a lot of experience as she was previously with Frozenpuppies until they were brought out. Jess has been really helpful to me with my enquiries so I thought I would pass her details on for anyone interested. Jessica Kada siresonice or www.siresonice.com Hope this will help people in all states wishing to do AI.

Please don't quote me but I think, trying to find on DogsNSW website that the cut off age for a pedigree bitch is 8 years, for the puppies to be papered as well.

I have a bad time with people who cannot spell! I have to correct menu's in cafe's and resturants, always carry a pen for this purpose. Also have to complain about bad spelling in shops etc, I have this stupid idea that children learn a lot of their spelling by what words they see, and that bad spelling doesn't help them to learn. But when a word is spelt phonetically for advertising purposes, I can deal with that. The ones I hate are in greengrocers when they spell Beans -Beens. Actually this thread is a worry, I really need to get a life beyond looking at bad spelling!!! Going off to get a life ;)

Seven Year Old Girl Competing In Schutzhund
freundhund replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Corvus This girl is the daughter of a top, HOT trialler in the USA. Her father has competed in the World ttles, also she is trained by T. Floyde, the top USA Schutzhund trainer. I believe her mother also competes. The girl does an excellent routine with a 5 year old dog of very sound temperament. -
Even after you have the antibiotics from the vets, go to your local greengrocer and get as many outer DARK GREEN cabbage leaves they will give you. NOTEyou want the ones the greengrocers trim off and throw out. Place in your refrigerator to chill. Fill half the whelping box with chilled cabbage leaves, you will find the bitch will lie on the cabbage leaves, change cabbage leaves about every 2 - 3 hours! There is an enzyme (forgottrn name) that helps relieve and break down the lumps in the breast caused by the mastitis. This is the time to billed up a good relationship with your greengrocer. Used leaves can go in compost or on the worm farm. Also if you plan to mate this bitch again, can I suggest that from day 3 after whelping you put the cabbage leaves in one end of the whelping box, this helps cut the incidence of severe mastitis re-occurring. Hope this assists you.

Thanks everyone, it looks like I will try either Rsy's camping Store at Camperdown or the Anaconda store at Moore Park, or another camping shop. Quick question for Corvus, what sort of material do I need to were under Wet weather gear to keep my skin dry?
-
Okay, I can't find my wet weather gear. (Haven't really had to use it in years.) Now with the rain we are having in Sydney, I am going to have to go and buy a new set. I think I am looking for a jacket and trouser set, either as a set or separately. So I need suggestions of where people have brought theirs, idea of cost and if you have any suggestions of good gear, I will need to wear at agility, showing, obedience and possibly sheep herding when I get to that. Oh, I am on the generous size so if you know where to get for larger women that will help as well. Thanks to everyone in advance for their help.

In the early 1990's one of the Guide Dog Schools in Europe did some work on the desexing of Guide Dogs, the findings were, <I am going on memory> that the desexed some dogs as early as 6-8 weeks and others were desexed at around 15-18 months just prior to being paired with a partner. The Guide Dog School found that they had a far higher success rate with dogs that were desexed later. I believe that during this time bloodwork was done and this showed that around this time that hormones released into the bloodstream of the dogs had an effect of causing a maturation of the brain. I did find a couple of articles about this on the internet a while ago but am currently unable to locate anything. With vets they are taught at University to advise people to have their dogs and cats desexed at 6 months to stop unwanted pregnancies. This recommendation was originally brought about in the early 1950's and 60's to help control the stray dog problems. My opinion and recommendation to my puppy buyers is, "If you can be a responsible owner, wait until your dog is between 15 months and 18 months".

Dog Won't Pick Up Metal Article
freundhund replied to Zug Zug's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Okay, haven't done UD for years, but I do remember teaching the Metal with a light smear of Vegemite or Peanut Butter on it! I found that the dogs then didn't seem to mind the Metal, also for picking up Metal there were really big treats and massive praise. I also stopped Dumbell work, Ball throwing scent discrimination on anything other than Metal objectts. In fact I think I spent weeks teaching fetch and games with the Metal until my dogs stopped thinking that there was anything else in the world but Metal objects. -
National German Shepherd Show/trial 2010
freundhund replied to Eric's topic in General Dog Discussion
What part of not being able to get 375+ dogs of what ever breed you want to show at a National to either Tasmania, Western Australia or the Northern Territory are people not getting. IT IS LOGISTICALLY NOT POSSIBLE to get that number of dogs into and out of those states. At our Nationals (GSD's) we have around 550 dogs entered, I cannot see in Tasmaina's case there being 175 GSD's to compete in a National Show, but working on the 350 - 375 number it is not possible to get that many dogs to Tasmania unless they start arriving 8-10 prior to the show and leave 8-10 days after the show. If the GSDCA didn't want a show in WA, Tasmainia or the Northern Territory why did I bother doing the numbers finding out all the information and sending it to the President,(on request) it basically at this stage cannot be done. I believe IF it had been viable GSDCA would have looked at it. -
Hi Black Bronson It is very obvious from your comments with regards to German Shepherds in Australia that you have not been very involved or around with the breed for very long. In fact from your lack of knowledge as to what has happened in the past you are making quite incorrect facts. If you had bothered to check with GSD people who have been around they would have explained that at various times the GSDCA and various state clubs have tried to assist those who are interested in the "WORKING" only aspect of the GSD. Black Bronson it takes two people to tango and the workingline people are not interested in truely getting Schutzhund into Australia, in the 1980's the GSDCA president Mr Louie Donald looked at using the BH test as part of the Breed Survey system in Australia. It was felt at that time that if the BH title could be impliemented with the ANKCA that would be a start in the right directions as well as a title that would be recognised back in Germany by the SV. In discussions at that time, the working people were not interested in just having a BH title they wanted the whole box and dice Schutzhund or nothing. The working people were told that if we got the BH title thru we could then work on encouraging more GSD owners to look positively on Schutzhund. The working people said "NO" to the GSDCA. At the same time a number of people in various states had spoken to members of parliament, who had agreed that they could see nothing wrong with a BH, great, and that these people all agreed that if we could start the ball rolling by getting the obedience and tracking parts of the Schutzhund titles recognised by the ANKCA that we would most probably be able to show that a good level of control had been achieved by these dogs and there would be a good chance to get the manwork gradually approved by parliament!!! Most of this information was taken back at that time to the three (3) breed clubs interested in Schutzhund at that time being the GSDCA, the Rottweiler Club and the Dobermann Clubs thru to the "workingline" members. Again the working line people wanted Schutzhund and they wanted it now!!!!!! Unfortunately, the workingline people at that time could not and would not accept that it could take possibly up to ten (10) years to achieve Schutzhund in Australia if we took the route proposed were there was the largest chance of success and we could more successfully lobby parlimentarians. So again Schutzhund went by the wayside. Today, the workingling people still need the co-operation of the showline people, however, the showline people IMHO feel that they are sick and tired of the attacks upon them and their dogs to the extent that they will no-longer show the support that they had given in the 1980's to the "workingline" people. In fact I and I know others who have done a lot to try and encourage the acceptance of Schutzhund feel fed up to the back teeth over the "workingline" peoples attitude. Black Bronson please note I have been a member of a couple of Schutzhund Clubs, however I am not currently a member due to the attitude of the working line people towards my showline dogs. I have previously done Schutzhund with 2 GSD's. I don't come from a pure show background.

National German Shepherd Show/trial 2010
freundhund replied to Eric's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi Eric I am quiet astounded at your comments regarding the GSD National. Like most people on the Friday I was well rugged up against the cold. I did not see any sane person of either sex wearing a bikini, to do so would have been notice due to the EXTREME cold. I would recommend that you check that your friend was at our National as I have spoken to numerous people who were at the show today with regards to your comments they to do not recall seeing anyone in a "bikini". Please if you wish to write this sort of comment check your sources and in future possibly use a more reliable resource. Secondly, I know that you have read on another forum how I did the costings and visability of getting approximately 350 GSD's from mainland Australia to either Tasmaina or to Perth to hold a National event, it was not just the cost of getting the dogs to and from the event but also the fact that it could take a MINIMUM of 8 days to get that many GSD's into either of those states and another 8+ days to get them out again. Thus to hold a show in either WA or Tasmainia is not possible, the WA people were able to understand and accept that particularly as the GSD National does rotate each year that until such time as there were more flights available to put dogs on they woud not request a Natioanl in their state, even though they are disappointed. Considering Nationals are held annually, I know that some people plan to attend the National and maybe one in another state in between times, I realise that this requires planning and budgeting but we have a number of members who appear to be able to do this whilst on an aged pension, possibly you might like to try this. With regards to your "friend's" comments to our dog, please note that she was looking at the young classes where puppies like children grow at different rates and that different parts of the anitomy grow at different rates and if your "friend" has been out of GSD's for a long time she might have forgotten how young puppies grow. In closing I would like to say that when making negative comments with regards to any breed or show it is far better to make them from first hand knowledge and by attending an event, than by listening to second hand gossip, critisim and disparagement. -
Hi Bisart Dobes Thank you for posting, Zed has posted this to the main GSD forum for Australia. The GSD National was held at the VCA grounds this weekend. I will also message the GSDSA president. Thank you again for letting us know about your find. Congratulations on your dog's nose.

Hi Ish Thanks for letting everyone know about our National. I look forward to meeting you and other GSD members that I haven't met before. Cheers

I knew I shouldn't have read this topic this morning. I have just found a speck of flea dirt on the Diva, but worse a hot spot starting. So back from the vet after an injection, antibiotic tablets, ointment and shampoo, I have been to Petbarn, couldn't wait for anything to come in the post, now have put Frontline on both of the dogs. The dog beds are in the washing machine, off to the supermarket for the flea bombs. Being a woman can other women relate to the fact that I feel I now need to reclean my house and that I am a dirty person because my dog has a flea?

Hi If it is Mastitis, I also agree to using the Cabbage Leaves. However, you actually need the dark green leaves from the outside of the cabbage, these are often the leaves your local greengrocer will remove before he/she puts the cabbages on display, your greengrocer will most probably happily give them to you. Secondly, if and in case it is Mastitis keey your girl on the cabbage leave in the whelping box for 10 days to stop the Masitis reaccuring, at this stage puppies will be suckling enough to keep your girls breast clear. Change cabbage leaves twice daily if you can. In future if you plan a litter with this girl again, having cabbage leaves on hand and put them at one end of the whelping box at the end of the new puppies first 24 hours. I sympathies with what you are going thru as I have been there with a bitch myself.
