  1. This might sound stupid but can u buy greyhound puppies as a pet? Libby won't even come inside she retreats to the kennel
  2. Mine have my daughters old cot with one side removed. Painted red and I bought rubber backed curtain material and made a cover for the mattress which I just throw in the machine of a weekend. All of their toys go on it and they lay on it because it is theirs... Better than a bed a bit bigger and so easy to wash clean! Also quiet cheap and simple to make
  3. Oh and acreage to run on when we are able to supervise. Ziz also likes swimming in the creek so something that enjoyed water would be great to!
  4. Just throwing it out there. We have had Libby the greyhound here fostering for a few weeks now and she is amazingly gorgeous with the other dogs. Also have Bichon frise rigby who is currently 2yrs old and the big fella English mastiff x great Dane will be 2 in may. Husbands company is going really well and we just bought our second house. Ziz is having alot of fun having Libby around to play with outside but Libby just isnt all that impressed with people and Prefers the pergola on her own than talking to me and the kids. She isn't nasty just not phased prefers being a loner. Little rigby is the boss of the house and spends alot more time inside than out where ziz is always exploring outside and only inside at night. Speaking to hubby about a possible puppy towards December this year when I am on holidays again. We just cant pick a breed I know what I want and don't want but just don't know enough about each breed to decide so here goes!! Must be: Big Gentle Short coat Playful Loyal About an hour exercise daily Friendly with other dogs and enjoy their company Able to tolerate small fluffy dogs. Good with kids Love people Must not be Working or herding breeds (border collie kelpie cattle dog etc) Long thick coat requiring alot of grooming What we have to offer for puppy. Huge fenced yard. Walks to lake and leash free park every afternoon excellent vet references and groomer references. 2 children to dote on her non stop Millions of toys to play with A family environment (our dogs go everywhere with us) if they can't come one of us stays home with them. Visits to school to run and socialize with children. Dog will sleep inside
  5. My little rigby cost me $400 because he is a purebred from RSPCA but I completely respect they need to pick up the extra money where they can because some dogs do cost alot more to look after. Mind u rigby had ear infections mites fleas and need proper clipping as well as desexing and vaccination and worming he probably cost them alot to but to buy a Bichon frise then desex vaccinate microchip etc would have cost me more than $400 anyway ;) I don't understand why people complain?
  6. As a landlord and a pretty lenient one I'd be really angry if someone didn't tell me about their pets. I'm all for people having pets and wouldn't turn down a prospective tenant because they had dogs of cats. We went halves in installing floating floors throughout our rental for the previous tenant as she wanted indoor dogs but previously I had white cream carpet. She pointed out it could be an issue with her older dog so we addressed it. A pet owner who supplies me with training certificates, vet references, obedience classes, trainer references and especially neighbour references is much more keen and responsible compared to the fulltime worker who gives me minimal information about themselves and all I know is where they work... I like the photos and the personal touch to the applications. Makes me feel you won't be afraid to ask when you do need things done and gives me more of an idea who I am allowing in my house. The tenants in there now invited me over to the rental they were in before ours to meet the dogs and have a coffee. Remember landlords are people to and many of us have dogs as well!
  7. Oh I'm not buying another dog I simply stumbled across them while looking at photos of amstaffs as opposed to pitbulls. I was just exploring and learning after reading something else on here unfortunately my schedule doesn't allow time for a puppy. If I had another dog it would be over 2yrs I just like all this learning
  8. Laexotica kennels... They look nice enough I just didn't understand u could use one prefix on 6 types of dog. Amstaff, normal staffy, British bulldog, Italian greyhound, English toy terrier, tenterfield terrier!
  9. Just wondering I thought breeders only had one breed and concentrated on that but I just found one registered breeder in sa has 6 different. Very different breeds. Is this normal? I'm learning so much here
  10. I just asked my hubby who is a crane driver and you can pick up 2tonne slings at tool shops which is what our boy plays with (English mastiff x Dane) They are around $12 each you can plait them or weave them into balls they are fairly long and very durable. You can also buy rubber conveyed belt and cut into the size you want just buy whatever thickness u need. We have 12 tonne sling about $19 hanging in a gum tree that he swings from and plays tug o war with himself! Whatever amuses him

I use a pink spray from my local rural supplier I think it's called cetrigen it's the only thing that seems to work and the dogs look funny with pink ears but it works better than the creams I bought and doesn't make the hair sticky or anything. Just looks a bit different!
  12. Try eBay http://m.ebay.com.au/Pages/ViewItem.aspx?a...oor&emvcc=0
  13. We can get turkey carcass and wings and frames and feet all through steggles... We do have a big steggles factory in Beresfield though.. I think it's about $5kg for the wings and legs etc but only about 2.50kg for frames. If I buy 10kg they do it cheaper and I just freeze them. Having a big dog chicken goes down to quickly without him chewing it.
  14. Wow I love this thread and all the Rottweiler ones.. My husband boss constantly bragged how his Rottweiler is biggest dog in the world must weigh about 80kg til we invited them over for dinner and sized him up next to my 82kg male English mastiff x Dane. He looked more like a Labrador.
  15. Thankyou lillys mum and I have to laugh because I just fed them their daily hills dinner and a few chicken carcass each!
  16. My mastiff is the biggest sook while I am around and at home but is definately a protector. I called a neighbour who he knows well to get washing in out of the rain one day and she couldnt get past the gate. People have pulled up out the front while the kids are playing and spoken to them and he has warned them off with a few barks. And I've had someone knock on the door at midnight to which I let ziz answer it with me. Turned out he had the wrong house :S It is easy for him to scare though he just has to walk with u and grumble and people don't like it.
  17. I think thYs the type of answer I needed thanks do u have any suggestions on books?
  18. So can someone who does feed a totally raw diet and different food each day write me like a basic shopping list you would have for the week? I'm sorry if I'm being annoying I'm just learning so much and interested in changing my dogs to raw food
  19. So do you feed vegies and rice as well as the raw meat? Or what else "recipe" Type thing do u stick to? I'm interested in the raw diets. I don't feed cooked bones ever but my brother frequently gives them to his.
  20. Thanks I'm only new and still exploring topics learning as I go
  21. Purely out of interest what does everyone else feed their dogs? Mine get hills it's all I've ever fed them and they thrive on it but some people I see say their dogs don't do so well and prefer home meals. How do u get a home meal perfect? Has anyone got good recipes? Mine also get raw bones and fresh chicken carcass. Does anyone feed their dog cooked bones?
  22. I do sometimes when my husband comes or I can go alone but a 5kg dog and an 80kg dog (his only 18months) either side of a pram when his a bit scared and skittish and still teenage silly. There are to Many uncontrolled dogs around here for me to trust him when his like that. His fine at markets and loves people and loves Swimming but I just can't trust that I'd be able to help if a dog ran at him and I think part of the problem is I am as scared as him. It took weeks and weeks and he had drains through his whole body and was tube fed as the Rottweiler went through his nose and down through the roof of his mouth and crushed his palette. I just can't trust now that his bigger and stronger that I'd be able to help him. I don't expect he would be nasty at all but I jus don't know how he will react or how I could handle keeping him my small dog and my baby safe all at once.
  23. I have two dogs and find this thread really interesting. My small Bichon frise loves walking an just over an hour daily Ensures he settles easily of a night. If he misses his walks my house turns into a nightmare. Chewing barking pulling at your leg and darting between you everywhere u walk. My English mastiff wont walk. His healthy and not at all overweight but as a pup at 16weeks was attacked by a dog aggressive Rottweiler on his first walk. His ok to go into the car and loves swimming at the dog beach but never leaves within a metre of my partner or I. I just simply can't get him out of the street to walk. It won't happen and dragging an 80kg dog up a hill doesn't work well either especially when his crying and barking. We try to get to the lake or beach weekly with him and he comes to the farmers market every second weekend. But his quite happy sleeping on his bed and protecting the house not walking doesn't seem to have a negative effect on him anyway. He sits shakes drops waits and walks fine on a lead anywhere out of my street and gets along with dogs of all sizes I don't see a problem??
  24. Just letting everyone know the meeting went extremely well. Both boys seem to have a very laid pack demeanour about them which surprised alot of kennel staff when putting opposite dogs together. Ziz walked out of the door and didnt even look at him. I told him to sit and stay while one of the ladys had his lead and i patted and rubbed the other dog ziz sniffed him and laid down next to him. the little fella came over and started smelling ziz and ziz just took it all and licked him which the little fella seemed to like because he laid down in front of him. The ladies and i still had hold of leads and were talking but the two boys just slept in the sun together while we were talking not a worry in the world. Im going back again on friday as i expressed to them the best way i could that i was still following other avenues and not wanting to rush into anything without atleast two meetings. It seems they will be fine but we kept them on lead today on friday we are going to put them in an exercise run and see how they react to each other.
