My husband and I are travelling around OZ. We don't have a fixed address and are living in a caravan on the road. We have been doing this for just over 12 months and are really enjoying this lifestyle.

  1. Ok so we left Mt Isa today and are now at Barkly Homestead in NT. I tried to get Bud to have some ginger nut biscuit this morning but he wouldn't eat it. Gave him a drop of rescue remedy every half hour as Persephone suggested. This seemed to help a little bit but he would still start panting not long afterwards. I tried moving his bed into different spots but that didn't make any difference. He would just try and get as close to me as possible. We stopped a few times and let him get out and walk around and he was fine. Once we got going again after a lunch stop he seemed a bit better but we were off Qld roads and into NT roads which were a bit better. He would still pant a little but not as much as before. I'm wondering if maybe he is just getting used to long trips in the truck as he only did short trips previously. I have run out of things to try and just don't know what to do to fix the problem. We are staying here for 2 nights so he can have a break from travelling.
  2. We are in a caravan and have a Chi who is almost 4yrs old. We use a plastic tub with one side cut out if it lined with newspaper and he is happy to use this and it's easy to keep clean. He was trained from a pup to wee on newspaper anyway so that made it a bit easier to get him to use the plastic tub. Hope you find a solution.
  3. Really? How cool :) You learn something new each day. I love DOL I am inclined to agree with HW - it does sound more like car sickness, rather than anxiety. I hope your little one eats the ginger biscuit because it did work with my older boy.. That is exactly what Zig is like on a trip.. First half hour is fine then he starts to drool, shake, won't sit down, hangs his head.. I stop the car and get him out for 5 minutes and he is fine again.. We get back in and within 20-30 minutes he is doing the same thing again. Stop again etc.. I can't get him to eat anything, even when we stop.. I took ginger biscuits on our last trip to Sydney and he just turns his head away, when they are offered. I even bought him a lemonade ice block and he turned away from it.. Yep this sounds like what Bud does. I hope I can get him to eat the ginger nut before we go.
  4. I just gave him a ginger nut to see if he would eat them. He polished it off pretty quick. If he didn't like them they wouldn't go to waste as I love ginger nuts.
  5. Thanks for the suggestions guys. We are currently in Mt Isa until Monday so I will pick up some ginger nut biscuits from the supermarket today and give them ago. I will make sure I have the rescue remedy on hand to try that as well. We are sitting above the wheels more so I guess that's why we feel bumps more so it could be the truck but there is no where else for him to sit. Hopefully either the biscuits or rescue remedy will help. I will let you know how we get on. It could be awhile though depending on what the signal is like once we leave here. Thanks again.
  6. He's fine but unfortunately the highways out here are crap so we can't avoid the crappy roads.
  7. He travels on the front seat next to me in his bed. He has never been sick while traveling. He is alright when he first gets in and we start driving but then he starts to pant and shakes. Air con is on all the time.
  8. Pretty sure its not a health issue as once we have stopped driving he's fine
  9. He has a water bowl next to him the whole time but he won't drink it when he's stressing out. He just tries to get as close to me as he possibly can. He had never been like this before as he had always liked being in the car/truck.
  10. Thanks VizslaMomma I will give it a go. Yeah he is tiny but is just the right size for travelling we reckon.
  11. We are traveling around oz with our chi who is nearly 4yrs old. He has been traveling with us since he was a pup but we have recently changed our vehicle from a landcruiser troop carrier to a Isuzu truck. Bud has been in the truck quite a few times while we were in Townsville for about 9 months. We are now back on the road to continue our travels. The first day we didn't have any problems with Bud but the second day on the road he started to pant heaps even though the air con was on in the truck and shaking and wouldn't settle down. Usually he just sleeps when we travel. The only thing that I can put his behavior down to is the roads were very bumpy and he didn't like being bounced around. Neither did we for that matter. I was thinking maybe if I gave him some rescue remedy before we head off in the morning that may help to calm him down. I only have the drops for humans which I have been told us Ok to use on animals but I wondering how many drops I should give him. He weighs 3kg. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Thanks Wundahoo. Fingers crossed all goes well for her dog
  13. Thanks Danny's Darling. All I wanted to do all along was try and help her out with her pooch. I just hope her dog is now on the mend.
  14. The dog is no longer taking the benadryl or aspirin. Is only on the prednisone.
  15. I hope so too. I'm still trying to get some more info but she's not answering my messages at the moment
