  8. Ok i think i undertsnad now.... I must be slow lol
  9. I think i got confused/ am confused as his dad had 2 yellow parents, his mum is choc and she has a black mum and choc dad so i assumed the black came down through those lines on the mums side
  10. I cannot say you are "wrong", I don't know enough myself. All I can say is black is not a gene that is CARRIED, sort of like it is there by default and the other genes play a matchmaking game of masking that gene, or not. That other site HERE explains how what each parent passes on can produce the black. If you ask me to put it in plain English, well, I can't Edit to highlight a sentence I wrote, I think the lightbulb finally went off for myself as to how the blacks come about of course I could be wrong, but it made sense in my head! :p Im just wondering if Gibbs could technically only carry choc and yellow , so therefore with what you are saying he wouldnt carry black at all but he could produce black coz they all carry black?? Very frikken confusing!! Just a question was Gibb's litter mates black & yellow? That would make Gibby a yellow carrying chocolate me thinks ? Yup only black and yellow babies :) i would never breed with him its just a theoretical question as his mum was choc dad yellow from yellow only parents

  12. While i agree that that is what is on the website i think that it just cannot be right. If my mum is blonde but i have brown hair i still carry the gene for blonde and my kids could have it. Gibbs has to carry the yellow gene as he is yellow so is dad, he must carry choc too if mum was choc. His brothers are black so he has to have the black gene in him some where as his littermates are black but have the same genes? Am i wrong?
  13. So then technically even tho my pup has abchoc mum and yellow dad and black siblings he cannot carry black, yellow and choc genes? His brother is black and carries all 3 colours.
  14. Chocolates are a bit different to yellow and blacks, who can carry any colour gene. A chocolate can only carry yellow - not black. This yellow recessive gene only impacts if both parent have the gene. However, even from this mating you can still get lovely dark puppies. See this boy is from parent with yellow recessive and had some yellow litter mates. Sorry but that is wrong otherwise their would have not been any black pups in my pups litter as the dad only carries yellow lines mum was choc.
  15. I agree with everything Fetchingdawgs says you are after working line labs
  16. Sorry smisch, but that's bollocks!!!!!!! RS i am lab ignorant but have heard it said that if you put two choc's together you only get diluted choc and that is very bad? Same as two merle collies? Just wondering if this is true or not? I know nothing of lab colour genetics I'm not full bottle on lab genetics myself and I welcome those who are to come in and correct me or elaborate but no, it isn't as simple as saying it is bad to put 2 chocs together and this dilute thing due to mating 2 chocs I don't think exists. Labs can carry yellow, chocolate and black (black dominant) and sometimes it can help to know what colours they carry so you can mate accordingly. There is never a "dangerous" combination like mating 2 merles, but it is preferred not to mate chocolate to yellow (if they don't carry black I think it is?) as you can end up with light pigmentation which isn't desirable (but has no health effects). Hopefully someone with more knowledge can come in and help out with this question! :) Also not an expert but 2 chocs can produce lovely chocs if they dont carry the yellow gene. If they carry the black gene thats fine. It all depends on what colour the parents carry, my yellow boy has a chocolate mum and yellow dad, dad only carries yellow, mum carries yellow, choc and black but because dad only carries yellow none of the pups were choc, they had 2 yellows and 5 black babies, all beautiful :) You can get some lovely choc labs but i have only ever seen 1 who i think is outstanding, in real life of course, seen many beauties on the net but i prefer the yellow and black labs myself, probably wouldnt get another yellow due to the shedding, they def shed more!!
  17. I am not a small dog person but while i would never own one i do see their appeal :) i naturally like my own breeds best and i sometimes think if i couldnt have labs maybe i would just be dogless. We all have our preferences
  18. The blacks can also bleach but its rare, my boy does and many people ask if he is black or chocolate. His is from an interrupted hair growth cycle from meds tho
  19. Labs are around $1500 here in WA, puppy or slightly older
  20. Thanks, I'm glad it's not just me that thinks it's a lot. I might also go and visit Victory pet foods to look at their meats, I have been very happy with Victorys meats, been using their roo, lamb and goat for 18 months now. No hassles except they cut their bones too small for my liking
  21. With Petplan it states that dogs need to be vaccinated, titre testing is accepted by them
  22. I play this with my two Though in a trial, they really could learn to drop faster  I do somtimes do this but Gibbs is sooo slow lol
