Were the xrays done at your local vet or a specialist? My first lot of xrays were done at the local vet and nothing showed up, it was not until we went to the specialist that the ED was clearly visible. Lab nut- I recommend you get the xrays read by a specialist. There are changes that you can see on xray but they can be very difficult, even for experienced vets. Another option is to get your dogs elbows CT scanned. You can pick up things like fragmented medial coronoid process much better on CT scan. 100% agree with seeing a specialist if I had seen one sooner maybe Gibbs would be in a better position

This is the usual post surgery regime and it works. The dogs I have known to have the surgery were only about 5-6 months old and they led normal lives after that. Early detection is important so any 3-6 month old med-large puppy with a limp lasting more than a week should be investigated. Yup I'm very adament that I will stick to the surgeons directions as Gibbs had an ulna ostectomy so he has to take it real slow.

He is actually doing really well pain wise, he hasn't been whining or crying at all. All I can say RosieFt is I wish I had had him at the specialist sooner. Dr Tom Hill has been fantastic with Gibbs, if we had seen himsoonerperhaps we wouldn't have such damage to the cartilage

My specialists said he could see changes in the elbow on the first setof X-rays that no one picked up, bit frustrating really.

Hi there, funny you should ask as he had his surgery yesterday, turned out he needed fragmented coronoid processes removed and his elbow cleaned up via arthrotomy and he had ulna ostectomy to reduce the incongruency. He was monitored at the emergency vet last night and came home this mornng, he is hopping around on 3 legs but seems happy enough. My first X-rays showed nothing so I suggest seeing a specialist and having more done, Gibbs has no cartilage left in his elbow as he wore it all away due to the incongruency wish we had pushed to see a specialist sooner as they have been excellent. ETA before we saw a specialist I did acupuncture etc but nothing seemed to help and we now see why here is a pic taken today, surgery was yesterday 15 March 2012

Well it's really a waiting game, prognosies for ellbow dysplasia is hardas basically at 8 months he has no cartilage left in his elbow. They have cleaned out the joint, taken all the shards out and the cartilage will repair itself. They cut out a section of the bone of his ulna to make the joint sit on the right bone, the weight was sitting on the wrong bone in his leg. Arthiritis will be a reality pretty early in his life.

My older boy had double canines for about 2 weeks after that they fell out, pup was a different story as his he broke and they absecessed and got removed.

I feel very sad for him, but on the positive side all other 3 joints are good

Sure he will be, its just a much bigger procedure than arthroscopy

Gibbs had to have a section of his ulna bone cut out today as one of the bones grew too fast or too slow abd caused cracks and chipping. Very long slow recovery ahead

My 2 eat raw and their pee still kills the lawn! The older one is on meds or allergies so I understand why his urine may be burning grass but the pup is on no meds

How are u finding the VAN? I find it makes mine pick up weight really quickly if I feed according to the packaging I have to feed much less. I've not noticed any difference in either dog. :) Maybe is because I only feed the VAN and no kibble?

I find it easier people seem more eager to make an effort to help.

Loved this display and loved the labs and the cocker :) i may be swayed to get a cocker next time round ....
