Ridgeback / Dobermann Lovers - I Need Your Help!
Mason_Gibbs replied to Mav_1's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes they do steal your heart and even though my one dog was a little cow for most of the time she did do things that were very cute, like sit in the lounge with her front paws on the floor like a human :D she is very protective of my mums house still and even though her athiritis is real bad she will always wait up for my mum if she goes out at night and will go down to the garage to escourt her back up - I love that about her!! I also think she is a particually stubborn dog, dont think I have ever met another like her! Her sister was more gentle and very sooky whereas Gabby was very independent and was only affectionate towards men -
Ridgeback / Dobermann Lovers - I Need Your Help!
Mason_Gibbs replied to Mav_1's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am going to put my flame suit on here as many may not agree with me..... Anyway here it goes, I have had 2 ridgebacks and I must say they are very stubborn dogs and to teach them anything you have to make out that whatever you are teaching them is their idea, they are not flexible. I have not owned a doberman but there are 2 in my obedience class and I will admit that they do not look like easy dogs to train, very active, very spirited also stubborn. The one guy in my class has trained many obedience champions and he is even finding this dog a challenge. In all honesty if you are a novice dog owner ( ok i see you have trained a dog before but was it pet classes? Trialling classes?) I would not get a doberman or a ridgeback. I think to own either of the breeds you should have a personality where you take charge and dont give in easily ( I am a bossy take charge kind of person but I never managed to be alpha dog with my one ridgie, yes I did not know stuff that I know today so maybe that would be different but I dont think she would ever bow down to authority, a professional dog trainer could not help me with her 11 years ago when I got her). -
When Is A Good Time For A Second Puppy/dog?
Mason_Gibbs replied to erinonthefarm's topic in Puppy Chat
My dog will be 2 in april and I have my name down to get a pup that will be born around June. I am hoping the age gap is big enough, my dog is fairly obedient though but is still playful enough that when pup is bigger he will enjoy playing with him. I do have my doubts though wondering if Mason will be jelous of the pup at all as he has had my full attention for 2 years! Hope it does not change our relationship for the worse as he is very bonded to me. -
Feeding Well On A Budget
Mason_Gibbs replied to CazReiAndKuma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dog used to be sick on bones, until I started giving him roo bones, he seems 100% on them for some reason and I occassionally give him lamb bones too now and as long as he does not get the lamb bones daily he is fine with them. -
Feeding A Puppy Raw From 8 Weeks
Mason_Gibbs replied to Mason_Gibbs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The pup will probably be on dry at the breeders and when he comes home he will get that for awhile. The trouble comes in where if the puppy throws up etc and my other dog eats it, now that wont happen at first as obviously they will be separated when I am not here at first, not because I dont trust my big dog with him ( he totally ignores pups, 'if i pretend that are not there, maybe they will go away...') but because I am not sure what mischief the little one may get up to chewing things etc. Kenneling them where they wont feed RAW wont be an option for me as I have yet to find biscuits that the allergy dog can eat anyway although something he could eat would be Ziwipeak I just have not tried it as yet ( but I read in the ingredients it has chickory in it?? Not so keen on that). -
That's coz it is too hot Although better today Much better today! Well I got my K9 membership number today so I can now do an entry for the Western classic. I will only be able to get the money order WED and post it off on the same day so all going well it should get in on time How exciting! I hope I can get there to watch. When do you find out if you are rostered on?? I know now I just keep forgetting to get out my roster and K9 news and figure out when/if it clashes. Is It Just Me, Or Do Some People Just Don't Get It ?
Mason_Gibbs replied to BMAK's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I had a dog aggressive bitch, there is no way I would take her to a class where there were loads of other dogs around as I know if she got hold of another dog she would really hurt it and if the dog just ran up offlead etc then I would have a big problem. I only walked her etc where there were no other dogs, I could not take the risk of her killing someone elses pet. -

I have my name down for a pup that will be born around mid year, my current lab is an allergy dog and can only get fresh meats and veg, along with some veg, sardines, yoghurt etc as he has a reaction to everything else. Now I am trying to decide if I will feed puppy raw from the time he comes home, or will I give him biscuits while he is growing rapidly or should I do a combo of both?? I would like to feed mainly bones and meat but I am worried that if I do not give the right nutrients the pup may have growth problems etc. Any tips/advice??

I bath my allergy dog 1x a week, I am supposed to do it 2x a week but I never get around to doing it. I have my name down for a puppy to be born middle of the year, I am still deciding whether I will do kibble or raw, leaning towards raw but I need to do some research.

Ideas On Dogs Sports For My Pointer
Mason_Gibbs replied to a topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I train at Northern Suburbs, you can train obedience, agility and they do dancing with dogs. -
AT our club you cannot start agility until the dog is 14 months old and you have to pass a basic obedience test to be allowed into the beginner agility class.

So quiet in here the last few days??
-
At least the drizzle has cooled it down a bit My guys are still fine at the moment :D They all got washed yesterday which probably wasn't the best thing to do when I should be keeping them quiet - wet dog zoomies are fun Have warned them at work that if any of my dogs start showing signs I will be rushing them to the vet so they will have to cover my patient but fingers crossed I won't have to skip work. Foal is much happier now she is back out in the paddock and no longer being jabbed with needles Glad to hear Daisy is still going well Glad to hear that Daisy and your dogs Mirawee are doing ok. Hopefully they never show any signs :D

Feeding Well On A Budget
Mason_Gibbs replied to CazReiAndKuma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We have 2 Rotties - 40kg & 56kg It costs us to feed RAW only for both dogs - $45 for 8 days (that works out to be less than $6 per day for 2 big dogs) Victoria is more expensive than WA for RAW by $36 pm for what we buy but I believe that is because we feed mostly Roo and it is illegal (for some silly reason) to cull Roo's in Vic so the meat has to be brought in from NSW. We feed Roo but also beef, lamb only for the young dog, too fatty for mature dogs, chicken carcas (or wings, necks) and offal. These meats are fed either on the bone or minced. If minced we mix in some or all of the following: grated carrot & sweet potatoe, raw finely chopped spinich, brocoli, silverbeet (all veg are grown in the garden so cost is almost nothing) plus rice or oats, powdered kelp, sardines in oil, egg, garlic & yogurt. They also get the odd cooked sausage, rear cooked liver or piece of cheese but these are usually training treats. Their coats are alway shiney with or without a bath, their weights are managed within a kg only by adding or subtracting half a handful of meat mix, their "number twos" are minimal for big dogs. Good luck I do my RAW for about $45 for one dog for a fortnight, I pay $3.50 for a KG of mince/meat and then $4.50 for a 4kg bag of bones. I dont grow my own veg so I buy fresh pumpkin and sweet potato plus the yoghurt, eggs etc. I must look into getting some frozen veg though. -

I dont find feeding RAW cheaper but I have an allergy dog and he can only get lamb, roo and goat so I cannot do chicken which would work out heaps cheaper for us!!! My 32KG lab gets, 200g mince/meat a day, some pumpkin/sweet potato and a raw bone. He also gets fish oil and evening primrose oil a day and sardines and eggs once a day, and some yoghurt a few times a week. -
Yes I agree, we should have a meet soon. Mason likes Buddy

Ridgies love drinks at their level, one year after xmas my gran fell asleep by the pool with her glass of Baileys, I x Vicky dog drank the whole glass of Baileys, lucky she is a big dog and just slept it off lol! Edited to add, it was the same dog who took the chocs out hamper and had the caramel and whipped cream off the kitchen bench, she is a sneaky one!

Royal Cannin dry food. Does a wonderful job and yes hot spots are a fungus and we believe preventing hot spots by adding a can of tuna in tuna oil once or twice a week to our bullmastiffs diet. The omega 3 and the oil help promote good skin and coat along with regular brushing to bring oil out in coat. Also dont go over board with baths.Let the dogs natural oils in the coat do their job protecting the skin. Healthy skin and coat= no fungus,no hot spots. Prevention is better than cure. Try it you may be pleasantly surprised. Fish oils will do nothing unless taken in the correct quantities for a dogs weight, my 32Kg lab takes 5 x 1000mg fish oils a day and 5 x evening primrose oils. Hot spots have nothing to do with the oils in the skin/coat and all to do with moisture/humidity. Also you can change foods until the cows come home but unless you know what the dog is allergic to its a waste of time, elimination diet is best if you think its allergies, but plenty of dogs without allergies get hotspots this time of year. Someone also recommended taking the dead undercoat out with a furminator, I have ordered one to see if it makes any difference.

Mason is fine with storms but my 2 cats are pathetic, they can sense one coming and go hide under beds or in closets etc We did get pretty bad, loud storms where we come from so I think thats what sparked it. Power back on now. Our club training is cancelled for tomorrow as they just dont know what the weather is going to be like.

Storm hit ellenbrook and we have no power... So hot to be sitting with no fan or aircons. Hope we dont loose power tomorrow again. Lucky my phone still working although during storm i had no signal!!

My allergy dog has been battling hotspots since end november, we think its a combo of the hot weather and his immunotherapy shots as he seems to get the spots about 3 days after his injections. I did use baking soda and curash on his spots and it cleared up 8 out of 10 of them, I wash them first with this red antiseptic wash I get from the vet and then I put the baking soda or curash. He has just had a course of antibiotics for 2 that would not clear up and needed to be shaved and treated. My dermatologist also suggests using Malacetic wipes on them when they have almost cleared.

I was shocked at how the poor GSD was left in the bathroom all night on its own away from its family. No idea why he has no clue on crate training???
