  1. Fetchingdawgs i do try and do the hold training a few times a day. I dont think i am too soft on him because i have managed to teach him everything else for obedience with no problems. I hold the dummy out to him, he takes it and drops it. When he holds it for longer he gets a toy reward, if i bring food into the equation he drops the dummy even quicker. I have gotten a few opinions at the retrieving training day and loads of people said to keep going like this and he will eventually click. I know i am not the best handler which is why i do come on here and ask for advice. My dog does not have me wrapped around his paw, he will do what i ask him to.
  2. The logic was that if he just drops the dummy with wings on then its bad - he just drops everything its so frustrating and i would give up but if i get him through to open obedience he is going to have to to retrieve a dumbell so i have to keep trying!
  3. I taught it seperate too - thats the way we were taught in class
  4. Spotted D i have tried with the clicker. This morning i changed my tactics. He loves soft things so i took an old rolled up pair of socks and he will take that from my hand and walk around with it in his mouth, i clicked and treated. He seems to prefer picking it up off the floor though, he is much happier with that
  5. I have also heard that some people lean back slightly before stopping.
  6. He will retrieve the dummy no problem but he will drop it at my feet and if i give it to him from my hand he will again drop it. Have been told not to use the wings until he can hold properly ...
  7. Aussielover our intradermal testing was $1200!!
  8. I will make sure I say Hi - its sure is a long way to come. Any reason why you aren't coming too?? Cows calving, kids and husbands work, distance and budget :p I am planning on coming in the middle of June for an ET and hopefully a trial as well. I think our club is hosting a trial mid june Oso ;)
  9. I did the same Waiting for mine to arrive Love the vid, what a good Kelpie!! Yes I was actually a bit surpised he fetched them :p Expecting to have him run out, sniff and run back without it. I just got the field trial birds... I know they do but at this stage just can't imagine my future Britt pup retrieveing a huge duck! Not until it's fully grown at least I have been told not to give masona dokken until he can hold a dummy, problem is he could not be less interested in a dummy and so now i am at a dead end - about to give up as nothing we try works so far and after 2 months of trying there is not even a slight improvement in his holds.
  10. Club trial yesterday and Mason did very well 27/30 for heeling , 9/10 for SfE ( not entirely sure why we lost a point there) and we lost a point for recall which was my fault as i spoke to him as he came in and sat. Perfect sit and down stay!!! YAY! As for the progress on our retrieving / dumbell holds, there is none, he has no clue what i want and i am fast loosing patience, i am willing to pay someone else to teach him lol!!
  11. I will make sure I say Hi - its sure is a long way to come. Any reason why you aren't coming too?? Will keep a look out and say hi too - it is a long way to travel
  12. That's what you think :D Just kidding :D And no worries about the photos, it will just give me something to look forward to :D ;) A quick scan through my pics shows more practice is required, especially with focusing on fast moving dogs Some should be salvageable though CC you are welcome to come to the obedience trial on sat and take some pics of us...
  13. Roxi n hemi CCD, CD, CDX, UD & UDX are the obedience titles. We are newbies to trialling and are doing CCD, its basically 5 mins of heelwork, with auto sits, some drops and stands, changes of pace etc. Also a stand for exam and a recall. Then if u pass all that you do A 1 min group sit stay and a 2 min drop stay, i dont know enough about the rest to comment except to say as u go up the levels the exercises obviously get harder and more complex like scent discrimination and dumbell retrieves over a jump etc, longer stays, stand stays, out of sight stays.....
  14. Thanks And to Candice who emailed me the details ;) Entries will be in the post this arvo 3 more trials and another full weekend, here I come I am quite worried about 2 trials on 1 weekend, not sure if mason or i will crack first
  15. Leave your dog in a stand, walk away, about turn, down your dog, return to dog. that sounds easy to pass now how do i teach my dog to drop without tapping ground between her paws lol ??? Lol u need to do all the heelwork, stand for exams etc too and the stays ok the heelwork is the problem then lol stand and stays no worries rofl Lol i thought mason was good at everything until we started trialling, then his sit stay went out the window ;)
  16. Leave your dog in a stand, walk away, about turn, down your dog, return to dog. that sounds easy to pass now how do i teach my dog to drop without tapping ground between her paws lol ??? Lol u need to do all the heelwork, stand for exams etc too and the stays
  17. Leave your dog in a stand, walk away, about turn, down your dog, return to dog. Ok mason can do that already so thats cool. I freaked when someone said you have to do dumbell in CD - then some1 else said its optional . I am stressed for Open and the dumbell, i best be ordering one and putting in more effort!!
  18. We always grew up saying Norman no mates lol!!
  19. Yes i think the closing date for entries is today for gosnells i saw how tired Mason was after his club trial yesterday, he would not be good at 2 trials on one day, he could get away with the heelwork but may fall apart in the stays. For CD what is the COP?? Ie stand to drop, sit to stand etc. There were 3 dogs only yesterday doing CD and i never got to watch.
  20. Unfortunately not. Who is doing the Midland obedience trial the following weekend and are you doing AM/PM/Both? I've entered both cos I'm a glutton for punishment Just trying to see if I will be buddyless at any stage during the day! I am only entered for the morning as i have a wedding in the arvo as hubby forgot to tell the people we wont be going!! Also i did not want to do 2 in 1 day and then do a trial on the sunday morning too, thats asking to much of Mason- i know his limitations, he is a good boy but gets tired easy. I think i will be friendless this coming sat and hibby is working so i will be a real norman no mates lol.
  21. Is anyone doing the obedience trial this saturday??
  22. Club trial for us tomorrow, hope all goes well as next week is our 2nd real trial.
  23. The first derm consult alone was $150 i think but that was a year ago
  24. U got off lightly, ours was $600 but that was because he also had a ear infection
