I live in WA and I know that calling the police would be my last resort because they take so long to arrive. Maybe the police in Sydney are better manned and have a better response time? You haven't said whether the dog attack was on a human or another dog/animal.

Have You Ever Disliked Or Hated A Dog?
BigPaws replied to Danielle's topic in General Dog Discussion
QUOTE (BigPaws @ 15th Jan 2011 - 10:03 PM) I didn't like one of my dogs until she was about 2.5 years old. I put a lot of time and effort into helping her and now we are inseperable. She had so many issues like biting on the face, etc. I can't believe people will just give up and rehome their dog because it doesn't "fit". Would you do the same to a child? Some dogs just need a consistent home and rules. If you can't cater to a certain breed then you shouldn't get it in the first place. In some cases the dog gets a much better home with someone they actually bond with rather than just staying with the original owner for the sake of it and never being bonded. Some re-homings can actually be a good thing for a dog. Believe me, I know that some rehomings are the best thing. I'm talking about a dog that is born with certain behavioural issues that can be understood and managed by a person that got the dog as a puppy. Some dogs are born with unacceptable issues such as biting people. With the right owner these dogs can be taught appropriate behaviour. Rehoming dogs with these problems will make them worse because they are intelligent beings. -

Im Going To Get Flamed For This.. I Do Feel Really Bad Though..

BigDog thanks for your response. It's good to know that when I see someone's stupid child hurting one of my animals I can shoot it and say I thought it was dingo. I'm just so relieved to know that I don't have to check before I shoot. -

I didn't know people in Australia could have a gun and just shoot something because they thought it was something else and use that as an excuse....wow -
When Buying From A Registered Breeder Poll 1
BigPaws replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
I like breeders who have pics of their litters from birth to 8 weeks. I also like to see pics of their previous litters in their new homes. To me, it means the breeder cares about each and every puppy they have produced. -
Do You Think It Is Cruel /neglectful
BigPaws replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think it depends on the dog and whether it can be given enough exercise and mental stimulation in some other way on a daily basis. My dogs love going for car rides and having playdates with their dog friends and they are happy and well behaved. I do put a big effort into exposing them to different places, sounds, people, kids, dogs when they are puppies so that isn't an issue for them. I did used to think they needed walking on a daily basis, but since I've had my dog with health issues that prevent her being able to go walking, I've realised that it's not that important to them. -
People can do some very silly things for revenge, I too would be getting them out of there ASAP. I'd be worried he might do something very nasty to one or both to get at you. Can you just go there and take them when he's not home?
-
Jaxx, I think you may be misunderstanding what I'm saying. My comment was "I am talking about people breeding dogs because they can, and selling the puppies as registered dogs because they can make money out of them." What I mean is that there are Registered Breeders who breed only for profit, not for the future of the breed. I am in no way saying that ALL breeders do this. My concern is that it is too easy for people to become registered breeders, and breed for nothing but profit.

Ok, just saw all the responses to my comment.... When I say that breeders think they're special, I do honestly believe that a lot of breeders believe that only breeders can give a dog the right life/care. There are some out there who accept that someone doesn't have to be a breeder to be capable of giving the same level of care, ie keeping an entire bitch without her becoming impregnated. My comment about being against people breeding for personal gain.... I am talking about people breeding dogs because they can, and selling the puppies as registered dogs because they can make money out of them. This does happen and that makes those breeders no better than puppy farmers.

vetrq - I agree with you totally about breeders thinking they are special. I am against anyone breeding dogs for personal gain. I don't care whether they are a BYB or a Registered Breeder pretending to give a damn...they are the same in my opinion.

If mandatory desexing as a pup becomes legislation then the kindest thing for some breeds would be extinction.

My Rottie will lay on the lounge with me and watch TV. I turn the sound off and she will react to animals on the screen. Who says dogs can't see TV!
-
Dju, if birds weren't kept as prisoners then they would never need wing clipping so would never be in that position. I am a very strong believer in animal rights. I'm quite disappointed when I look on this forum
-
Yes Souff, wings clipped/hair cut I'm struggling to understand though, if their wings are clipped that makes them unable to do what they were born to do. Oh so you're saying that if I cut my hair that makes me unable to walk??????
-
Yes Souff, I do believe you are both from the same planet Gee you seem to be trying to put words in my mouth.........I never said domesticated ducks are native! It's nice that you think that nobody takes ducklings from the wild though, same as nobody takes native birds from their nests
-
Souff - ok so the creamy yellow fluffy variety should be taken from the wild to help wildlife? Sorry but I seriously doubt that a duck does more damage to our wildlife than say, a cat or irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to run off and chase/kill wildlife. I'm going to assume that you're not so arrogant as to assume that I know nothing about birds...........I'm talking about ducks that can fly, not emus. I wouldn't know about clipping wings of birds because I would never do it
-
Yeah, not sure what world you're from Dju, but people do take wild bird babies and sell them. It's not as dramatic as you would like it to be.....sorry! IMO pet shops should not sell anything live. They should sell pet food, toys, bedding, etc, provide advice and perhaps sell some human medication that is ok for pets. I also think they should assist in animal rescue.
-
Souff - ducklings in petshops How do you know these ducklings haven't been snatched from their mother from a local park? I have an issue with ANY live animals being sold in petshops. Any kind of bird is meant to fly and I find it extremely cruel to clip a bird's wings or keep it in an enclosure where it can't fly.

I didn't feel a bond with one of my dogs until she was almost 2 years old. I'm glad I stuck with her though, because now we have an unbreakable bond and I don't think she would have bonded with anyone else any better than she did with me.

I don't understand why you would need to remove the dew claw, can someone enlighten me? I've always had medium/large breed dogs and have never found the dew claw to be a problem!
-
I have a lot of friends who have dogs and really love them, but they let them do whatever they want. I have tried making comments to them and also trained their dogs for them when they stay with me but they revert back to their unruly selves when they return home. I have no idea what you can do when people don't care if their dog is a pain in the butt. Good luck!

I'd like to be in this one too

Has this group been set up yet? I'm not sure where to look.
