  1. Not necessarily. Obviously you'll get different temperaments across the board but the Malnois (especially those from working line) are a great deal more active than the rest. They are used a great deal for defence/protection work but not just because of their temperament but because their coats are low maintenance. They simply do not need anywhere near the amount of work as the other three varieties. I've rescued a few Mals but only one working line amongst them all so my experience is limited with that variety. So I'd welcome anyone who has a Malinois to answer this question for me. :) I do have a Groenendael (black, long coat) bitch that can run circles around all the Malinois that I've had here and at almost ten she's not showing any signs of slowing down. My other Groenendaels though do have an off switch and will chill and relax with you for as often as you like.
  2. No worries. I would've missed this normally. I just came in here out of curiosity.
  3. Another good old breeders remedy is to feed them and inch x inch block of TOFU. She swears by it and says it works. If not increase the dose. I've never had an incontinent bitch so cant' comment on its success but I have suggested it be used by a couple friends who's bitches were incontinent with great success.
  4. Just regarding this bit. I've heard Belgians can carry recessive black. So if a Terv x Terv mating resulted in a black pup would it still be a Tervuren just miss marked or could it be registered as a Groenendael? A Belgian breeder would be best to answer this but I would think it would be the same as the opposite Groen X Goen produces a Terv it is registered as a Terv http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=80374 In this senario the Belgian will be registered as a Groenendael. :) (ie; if Terv x Terv produces black) Just popped in here and saw this post. Haven't been on DOL for quite some time. So would I be right then, in saying that the ANKC really treats the four varieties as just that; four varieties of the SAME breed? Almost as though it's more like a different name per coat colour/type rather than different names for different breeds? Wow this does my head in but I'm glad I asked the question as it's so very interesting. Yes, the ANKC treats it as one breed with three different coat types. We have one standard with just the different coat types listed. Basically a Belgian should look the same when shaved. In the ANKC ring they are judged separately.
  5. Intervariety matings are now allowable in Australia again: EXCERPT FROM THE ANKC LTD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & BOARD MEETING HELD IN MELBOURNE ON 20TH & 21ST OCTOBER, 2012: At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Australian National Kennel Council Limited held in Melbourne: 10. Belgian Shepherd Inter-variety breeding It was resolved that the policy on Belgian Shepherd inter-variety breeding be amended to: “The ANKC Ltd permits interbreeding between varieties of Belgian Shepherds when needed for promoting health and genetic diversity (in accordance with FCI General Assembly 2011) – avoiding breeding long coated to wire coated or risk of untypical coat texture. Breeding combinations permitted: 1. Groenendael x Tervueren 2. Tervueren x Malinois 3. Laekenois x Malinois The progeny of the inter-variety mating is registered in the ANKC Stud Book, each puppy according to its variety.” Hopefully that clears it all up for you. :)

  7. I volunteer for an orgainisation that train dogs as therapy/assistance dogs. Part of my work is to go once per week to an organisation where people with brain injury attend. It is the most rewarding experience to see the joy on these people when they see me walk in with Jimmy (the Collie Smooth that I handle). Jimmy just loves going to see them and has been taught to gently jump up to people in wheelcharis and place his two front feet on their lap whilst they pet, groom or give him treats. Sometimes their co-ordination isn't the best and their patting may be a little on the rough side but Jimmy does truly enjoy it. He seems to know. On the days we go there he pulls at the lead to get in there and visit his mates. The first time we went there were a few tears from the carers at the responses and reactions we were getting from clients. It's just wonderful how a dog can make such a huge difference to their lives.
  8. When I saw the pictures on your first post I was devastated as I'd seen your boy in full coat. But wow what a change between then and now! I'm glad that you entered him as he is looking quite good now in only that short time. Well done on getting him to how he looks now. I bet you are glad you entered him.
  9. Hey there, The Queensland Belgian Shepherd Club will be very interested as well as they do help out with rescues in Queensland and Sally Rogers from Happy Paws Haven (as suggested) is fabulous. She has a special love of Belgians and will almost always take them. She's become our breed rescue contact for a couple of our breed clubs as a result. In the meantime if you need any further help or advice please don't hesitate to PM me. Cheerio, Maria
  10. LMAO Need I say that word SM?
  11. If it were my dog I would have done nothing for it to be this aggressive then I put it to sleep. However if he has been raised incorrectly then maybe the dog can be rehabilitated as this was not in his/her original nature. I say maybe as sometimes there is no point of return.
  12. Thank Alyosha, I din't think to look in there.
  13. Yes exactly! It would spread like crazy here considering we don't vaccinate against it.
  14. Rabies has now been reported 600km away from Australia in an Indonesian Island. Heres the link to the Audio story: Rabies
  15. In the garage. Our dogs are only in crates overnight or at dog shows. They roam the house during the day and basically lie near wherever I am.
  16. A Belgain sounds like it ticks your boxes. The coated breeds really don't take a great deal of grooming except when shedding.
  17. My first ever Belgian's show name was his prefix followed by 'Midnight Star' and at the time I only had one child and the last three letters of her name are ara so I combined the two and got 'Midniara' I was lucky that I got my first choice because I really had my heart set on it and would've bee crushed if I didn't get it.
  18. Ivy was a cute pup! Love the one of her speaking her mind That is one of my favourite puppy photos that I've ever taken and use it heaps. It's hilarious. I always weighed them and then took pictures of them afterwards. She was quite put out that I woke her to do this and voiced her opinions for all to hear.
  19. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LITTLE IVY I'm sure you are spoiled rotten most of the time but I'm sure you are extra specially spoiled today. Hug's and Kissess. Here's a trip down memory lane of Ivy's first weeks of life before jetsetting off to her new forever home. Ivy at 2 days old At 1 week At 2 weeks At 3 weeks and already voicing her opinions At 4 weeks At 6 weeks At 7 weeks At 9 weeks
  20. I just put mine in the dog trailer on one visit and on another visit I just popped them in the back of our Ford Territory which had a Cargo barrier to stop the pups from climbing into the car. Do you have a couple of crates that you can put them in? eta; I also used my show trolley to wheel my pups into the vets.
  21. I once had a maiden give birth to 11 puppies. I did not intervene at all and all pup's thrived and put on weight and lived on to be happy and healthy Belgians. Mum had plenty of milk and coped very well. In fact she still looked stunning when the pups were six weeks old. Had it not being for her saggy boobs she would've been gorgeous enough to go in the show ring. I fed mum a complete raw diet and started weaning the pups onto the same diet when they were almost 4 weeks old. ETA, I also had ribbons around the pups so that I could tell them apart.
  22. I've only experienced Kennel Cough amongst my dogs once at it was one that was vaccinated shortly before getting KC. I vaccinated her because I was putting her into a boarding Kennel and they wouldn't accept her until she'd had the C5 vaccination so I caved. Weird thing is I had 3 other dogs at the time who weren't boarded (they went away with me) who ran with her and weren't vaccinated against KC and they never got it. Haven't vaccinated against it since.
  23. Yes, pretty slack if you ask me! Congratulations, they look goregous. Love the black and whites.
  24. I've never progesterone tested and have always let nature take its course. When the bitch stands for the stud then she is ready, otherwise no mating. I have no clue as to how to bring a bitch into season. The only way my bitches used to come into season early would be if a bitch within the pack came into season first and then the other bitches would follow.
  25. I adore getting updates and photo's from my puppy buyers. I keep a website and always post the pictures they send me on a page dedicated to their Belgian. So don't worry about pestering. Sometimes I think that some puppy buyers forget how much we love the little critters. If I don't here from them for I while (and I still have their current contact details) I pester them for an update.
