Not necessarily. Obviously you'll get different temperaments across the board but the Malnois (especially those from working line) are a great deal more active than the rest. They are used a great deal for defence/protection work but not just because of their temperament but because their coats are low maintenance. They simply do not need anywhere near the amount of work as the other three varieties. I've rescued a few Mals but only one working line amongst them all so my experience is limited with that variety. So I'd welcome anyone who has a Malinois to answer this question for me. :) I do have a Groenendael (black, long coat) bitch that can run circles around all the Malinois that I've had here and at almost ten she's not showing any signs of slowing down. My other Groenendaels though do have an off switch and will chill and relax with you for as often as you like.

Another good old breeders remedy is to feed them and inch x inch block of TOFU. She swears by it and says it works. If not increase the dose. I've never had an incontinent bitch so cant' comment on its success but I have suggested it be used by a couple friends who's bitches were incontinent with great success.

Just regarding this bit. I've heard Belgians can carry recessive black. So if a Terv x Terv mating resulted in a black pup would it still be a Tervuren just miss marked or could it be registered as a Groenendael? A Belgian breeder would be best to answer this but I would think it would be the same as the opposite Groen X Goen produces a Terv it is registered as a Terv http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=80374 In this senario the Belgian will be registered as a Groenendael. :) (ie; if Terv x Terv produces black) Just popped in here and saw this post. Haven't been on DOL for quite some time. So would I be right then, in saying that the ANKC really treats the four varieties as just that; four varieties of the SAME breed? Almost as though it's more like a different name per coat colour/type rather than different names for different breeds? Wow this does my head in but I'm glad I asked the question as it's so very interesting. Yes, the ANKC treats it as one breed with three different coat types. We have one standard with just the different coat types listed. Basically a Belgian should look the same when shaved. In the ANKC ring they are judged separately.

Belgian Shepherd Inter-variety breeding It was resolved that the policy on Belgian Shepherd inter-variety breeding be amended to: “The ANKC Ltd permits interbreeding between varieties of Belgian Shepherds when needed for promoting health and genetic diversity (in accordance with FCI General Assembly 2011) – avoiding breeding long coated to wire coated or risk of untypical coat texture. Breeding combinations permitted: 1. Groenendael x Tervueren 2. Tervueren x Malinois 3. Laekenois x Malinois The progeny of the inter-variety mating is registered in the ANKC Stud Book, each puppy according to its variety.” Hopefully that clears it all up for you. :)

I volunteer for an orgainisation that train dogs as therapy/assistance dogs. Part of my work is to go once per week to an organisation where people with brain injury attend. It is the most rewarding experience to see the joy on these people when they see me walk in with Jimmy (the Collie Smooth that I handle). Jimmy just loves going to see them and has been taught to gently jump up to people in wheelcharis and place his two front feet on their lap whilst they pet, groom or give him treats. Sometimes their co-ordination isn't the best and their patting may be a little on the rough side but Jimmy does truly enjoy it. He seems to know. On the days we go there he pulls at the lead to get in there and visit his mates. The first time we went there were a few tears from the carers at the responses and reactions we were getting from clients. It's just wonderful how a dog can make such a huge difference to their lives.

When I saw the pictures on your first post I was devastated as I'd seen your boy in full coat. But wow what a change between then and now! I'm glad that you entered him as he is looking quite good now in only that short time. Well done on getting him to how he looks now. I bet you are glad you entered him.

Hey there, The Queensland Belgian Shepherd Club will be very interested as well as they do help out with rescues in Queensland and Sally Rogers from Happy Paws Haven (as suggested) is fabulous. She has a special love of Belgians and will almost always take them. She's become our breed rescue contact for a couple of our breed clubs as a result. If it were my dog I would have done nothing for it to be this aggressive then I put it to sleep. However if he has been raised incorrectly then maybe the dog can be rehabilitated as this was not in his/her original nature. I say maybe as sometimes there is no point of return.
