  1. Thanks for your replies the dog has already been assessed by a behaviourist vet and has started anxiety meds and a training programme. The head collar is really just as a precaution rather than a fixer. The dog will not be introduced to other dogs until we feel it can cope with them and then only from a distance but i want to get him used to a head collar sooner rather than later just incase i need one. I havent used one before so wondered what everyone thought. Why would you say the sporn is better than the others ?
  2. Hi Just wondered what you dolers thought was the best head collar a Halti or a Gentle Leader or anything else. Its for a reactive GSD. Thanks
  3. I have taught one of my chickens to jump through a hoop and taught one to put its foot on my foot. I want to teach them to do a little agility course but i need to make one first. I also taught them to come when called but i think that is more to do with the food than the clicker lol p.s Dogsportobsessed i was just unlucky i guess :0(
  4. Clicker training is brilliant just make sure you get some training or read a book on it first. You can get good cheap clickers on ebay but try to avoid getting the cheap chinese copies i got a couple from china and they fell apart within a few days so i got one from someone in Australia on ebay for about $5 and have had it for ages and love it :0) p.s i have clicker trained my chickens as well
  5. Thank you for all your posts they have been really helpful. Borders do sound pretty good to me although i love the look of the cairn as well. I just need to convince my other half we need another dog now :0)
  6. Hi I have been thinking about getting a second small dog for a while and someone mentioned that border terriers are less barky / reactive than some of the other terrier breeds. If anyone has any good or bad opinions on them i would love to hear them. also what do you think of Cairn Terriers ?
  7. we have started to incorporate more fun into our pet dog training lesson plans but still cover all the basics. Our customers and there dogs seems to love it
  8. I just want to say there are a few different types of front connection harnesses some are better than others we use the sense-ible at our dog club and i have seen loads and loads of big or small dogs instantly reduce the amount they pull. At the end of the day the only way to get a dog to stop pulling on a loose leach is training it to not pull but in my view for a inexperienced owner a front connection fitted correctly is a lot safer and kinder than a choke chain (but then i dont like choke chains anyway). Please dont shout at me for having a view
  9. I have been using a sense-ible harness for ages and love it ! both my dogs (one big and one little) seem to like them. I have been looking to get a new one and found one on Ebay the other day from an Aussie seller which is great as it took me ages to get my last one. I havent tried the other harnesses so dont know what they are like but wouldnt want to change now.
  10. These are really nice ones and the seller is in Australia so shouldnt take long to deliver http://www.oztion.com.au/buy/auction.aspx?itemid=11230803 I have one of these and love it as its not as noisy as the box ones and easier to use :-)
  11. Have you tried putting vaseline on the hinges of the black dog pouch ?? mine went a bit like that but is fine now
  12. I use the clicker for some things and not others so you should be fine.
  13. Hi depending on where you are in adelaide you could have a look at School for Dogs at sellicks beach www.schoolfordogs.com.au and Scholars in Collars in the hills www.scholarsincollars.com.au are both excellent they both do one on ones and have small classes (max 6-8 dogs).
  14. tlc are your dogs clicker trained ??? trick training is so much easier with a clicker
  15. didn't he once use a shock collar on a dog and it turned around and bit the owner In the Shadow video (which im sure you have all seen) where he strangles the dog into "submission", he actually kicks the dog which provokes it into attacking him (imo) you can see at 2:10 and also again at 2:54 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh9YOyM2TAk At the end, you can see the dog had urinated. How can anybody who likes dogs even a tiny bit watch this and say they agree with it - it makes me feel sick
  16. http://drsophiayin.com/philosophy/dominance/ more reason as to why I don't like Cesar.... Great link Leopuppy04 :D
  17. I taught my boy to skip with me its looks really cool when i dont get the rope stuck around my legs - he is a better jumper than me lol Cosmolo how about shaping look left then look right (2 seperate cues) a friend of mine taught her dog that it looks really cool.
  18. charley 101, I agree that it would be brilliant if there were some other representations of professional behaviourists/trainers on telly here to show the public some alternative methods as well. Witnessing applied animal behaviourists and trainers with qualifications and experience do their stuff would be fantastic.....a Patricia McConnell show would be awesome! We have got Doctor Harry :D
  19. I wish Victoria Stilwell (its me or the dog) had more of a tv presence in Australia so owners could at least see it from the positive side as well. Her ways wont get the owner bitten and the dog might even enjoy being trained (unlike Caesars dogs)
  20. I would be very interested to do the same poll in 10 years time to see the difference. I think a lot of his methods are very out dated and some incredibly dangerous and horrible. I personally wouldnt let any of my dogs within 2000 k's of him. I am not saying everything he does is bad but choking something till it shuts down because it cant breath is no way to treat any living thing whatever it has done. Its a big fat NO from me
  21. If you hear of TT workshop in Adelaide please post details its something i am really interested in
