  1. Don't you just love the strange things they all do!! My Kobi has this weird thing about rawhide objects.. its like he thinks their real?! Will stalk up to it then jump back in surprise when he gets close.. then throw it around and pounce on it and try and kill it while barking, growling and carrying on. Very strange but very entertaining!
  2. It's actually my Birthday but as I was planning to head out to breakfast with my two boys (human and non-human) for breakfast this seems like a great idea to work up the appetite!
  3. NewAmstaffOwner, I recently wrote to my local council Charls Sturt, about the same issue. The reply I got was that in South Australia there was nothing about being led from a moving vehicle, just that they needed to have effective control. We've been looking at starting when our pup is over 12 months on bike tracks! Not sure from the Police angle and if it matches the council's take on dogs.. good luck!
  4. Im not sure about the 6 weeks thing but I have personally witnessed real and scary aggression from a very young pup at our local park. had never seen anything like it before.. little thing at 9 weeks went for a 5 month old .. had it on its back and everything. The same pup is now coming up to 6 months and the few times i had seen it, it has gone for any dog that came near. We now leave the park if we see them But to me that is very unusual behaviour for a pup? I always wonder what the owner is doing to curb this aggression or if it's because of him..
  5. As we decided on a med sized dog and im a small sized lady I wanted to make sure I could always walk my dog. Kobi is now 9 months and we decided early on that we would begin on a tight heal and then give him more freedom rather than the other way round and have trouble reining him in at obedience. Walks are still enjoyable and these days he has a lot more freedom but still knows the rules

  7. Aztec Gold.. I feel your pain! Our pup was a very mouthy breed, and indeed a very mouthy dog! Took quite a while to stop the behaviour. We tried all the usual "OW', stop playing, leaving the room, spray bottle (although i did not quite like this method), distractions etc. Sometimes you just need to try different methods for a little while and see what works. We found leaving the room (or removing puppy from the room) the best option for us. It's a little time consuming and you really need to do it EVERY time. You only have to leave him for 10seconds or so and they realise that play is stopped and more importantly their favourite person has gone! Another things we taught and which was really just playing on his breed instincts was the word 'toy' and make him pick it up. This worked the best when coming home from work etc. when he is really excited and wanting to mouth you to say hi. Would just say 'where's your toy' and he would pick it up, then we can say hi. He still does this and we found it has helped a lot! Good luck with it all, im sure it can be much more stressful with small children but just be persistent! It all passes.. although each stage feels like a life time! Those piranha teeth will fall out soon!
  8. We also bought one as Kobi had some weird anxiety that made him bark like a manic in the car. Nothing seemed to be working so I thought I would give it a go. Ended up finding one on eBay from the US and got it much cheaper I could not believe the difference. As some have said it makes him go kind of dopey and want to sleep a lot. We did a 40 hour round trip a few months ago and not one bark the whole time and he just slept the days away! Thought he might be hyped up when getting out of the toilet but added bonus is that he was still really calm with no pulling on the lead! Such a great product.. highly recommend!
  9. An esky!! Hehe was the only thing that fit properly lined with towels. We were worried about safety if he was going to be on our laps.
  10. Hey guys we are looking at getting into tracking with our pup and was wondering if anyone was in Adelaide? There is a tracking club but they don't meet that regularly, seems only for trials?. We were hoping to find a group that can help train and lay tracks a bit more regularly. Also a question about laying tracks.. does it need to be an area without too many distracting smells, or can it be a public place. would we need to get out of the metro area? thanks
  11. Kelpiekaye great to hear it all worked out! Couldn't imagine moving people and pets overseas! Bit off topic but a friend it moving back to NZ and was quoted around $3000 just to send her cat over! I thought this couldn't be right, if you don't mind me asking how did you get your furry friends over? Did it cost anywhere near as much?
  12. Unfortunately NSW resorts are set up a little differently as VIC ones, as the village is down the bottom of the mountain and because of this it rarely snows that far down. It becomes even more difficult when trying to find snow outside the national parks! We are lucky this season there has been quite a lot of snow and more is expected next week! So you should find it along the road up to Thredbo. (I only know Thredbo sorry!!) There are some good walking tracks around lake crackenback resort, not sure about dogs there though but its the closest to the boarder of the national park. From memory you can also access walking tracks from Wild Brumby Schnapps (and taste some delish schnapps too!) but again there may not be snow that low. A local map may help with other walking tracks, would be best to go as close as possible to the national park as the altitude gets higher as you get closer which means more snow! Good luck and I'm very jealous you get to take Orbit to the snow, we had to leave Kobi as we we're skiing the whole time! It looks to be an awesome season so fingers crossed the snow settles very low and you get to play!
  13. My puppy has done this a few times, its like a little child falling over and crying until someone checks them and tells them they're alright and sends them on their way. Eg. on a walk one day when Kobi stops suddenly yelping like he's being murdered and holds his paw up to me and just looks at me, yelping all the time. I check his paw tell him its OK and off we walk. Or he walks straight into a fence the other day (uncoordinated doggy!) has a yelping fit until i have a look! Its so cute though, nice to know they think we can help!
  14. Thanks again everyone for the good advice. Glad to say we picked up Kobi a few days ago and he is now home and perfectly normal! Our walk to the dog park was fine yesterday and we have a usual group that goes down there and he was very happy to be back with his doggy friends. Think I was more worried than he was and carefully watched all interactions but all was good! I'll still be watching for a while (always watch, but more so) to make sure all is good, even had dogs running after him which i thought might freak him out as the other dog charged from the other side of the road. He hasn't been de-sexed as we wanted to wait until he was 12 months old, although hearing that entire dogs are more likely to be attacked is food for thought. We are just happy to get home and back to normality! We are reporting it, although with no actual damage to me or the dog not sure what will happen, but at least they will be aware. Thanks again for the advice and support and it never happens again.
  15. Thanks so much everyone for your advice and letting me know I did OK, I cant stop looking back to find things I could have done differently but overall I think it was all pretty good. I am going to report it, need to find the address and i am going to put it in writing to the local council in the town. I had heard that you can grab a dogs hind legs and walk backwards and in a circle to help break it up but as it happened so fast i never had a chance to implement what i wanted to do in that situation! Unfortunately we are not back there for another few days but it seems he is going well with family there. We will do our best when walking him and socialising him over the next few weeks, looking forward to getting him back home into his usual environment and doggy friends. Now i'm just scared its going to be two dogs next time.. no idea how to handle that one, almost want to take a stick with me!! thanks again everyone, it is very good to know i did some good things and i'm so thankful everyone is OK
  16. Hey all, we had a very scary experience yesterday.. our 6 month old was rushed and attacked my a escaped dog yesterday! He is thankfully OK, but as it was a first dog attack on my first dog I thought I would put it out there and see if I could have done anything differently (although when it happens so fast who can think?!). I had read a bit about dogs attacking for future reference and had applied a bit of it when it all went down. So here is the situation: We have gone on holiday and after a massive drive arrived at our family's place where we would be leaving puppy the next day. Out for a walk with OH's sister when this large dog comes rushing out of an open gate straight across the road full bolt towards us. I tried to get in front of Kobi and sternly told the dog to "Back Off" which he didn't and got around me and tried to latch onto Kobi. The next bit is a bit blurred but i managed to get the dog off Kobi and pin in down while yelling for the owner. To top it off Kobi had gotten out of his collar and ran onto the road and i had to stop a car while i calmed him enough to come back to me! I know we we're both very lucky to come out of it with no puncture's and i only have a few cuts and bruises from the concrete as went down trying to defend. I know i did wrong grabbing the other dog by the collar as it could have easily gone for me, but as i said wasn't really thinking once the "fight or flight" kicked in. So.. any tips for next time? I know people have mentioned kicking the dog which i probably should have done straight up. I am quite a small gal and am always nervous I wont be able to stop it next time Kobi perked up back at the house, although we had to walk home and was on alert the whole time and quite scared. Unfortunately we then had to leave a few hours later (first time away from us) so i'm really hoping he will be OK, mentally, with it all. The advice on just acting normal and watching him a little closer in normal doggy play seems like what we will do. Any other tips to try and avoid him becoming fearful with other dogs, especially ones in the front yards of houses? Sorry about the long post, needed to get it off my chest, most frightening moment of my life!
  17. She looks adorable! Love danes, and lover her colouring! Growing so fast.. sure don't stay little for long!!
  18. We have one a few blocks away and go there nearly every day! I think we have lucked out with owners and dogs as everyone is very watchful of dogs but also very social. There have been a few escalation's but people have stepped in before anything happened and I have learnt a lot from those people. I have received many mixed reviews from people but think as long as people keep an eye on and can control their dogs I think they're a great idea!! Good luck with it all
  19. Another Raw feeder here! We go with a good kibble for one meal and raw meaty bones for another (1.99kg chicken wings at our butcher!) Much more economical and still get all the good stuff from the good kibble!!
  20. Just like others have said anything smelly! We use fritz, cheese, apple I also make my own with pet mince and/or livers which i pinch/cut into tiny pieces and place into the oven on the lowest heat for a few hours until they dry out puppy loves them and they keep for ages!
  21. Hi everyone, been trying to do a search re: puppies going off food. Our little 4 1/2 month old Vizsla has gone off his food, no breakfast or lunch today, wouldn't touch the bones, even tried cooked rice for a filler but nothing! Thought it might have been the food going off, but as its everything im not sure. Could it be because he is teething? He's lost some teeth and im sure some will be growing soon, gums doing look inflamed though. Vet wasn't too worried which is good, anyone else had a similar problem, or tips on what to feed to get him to eat something? Seems like his normal self, maybe a little less energetic (probably as he has not eaten) Thanks
  22. Thanks for the reply.. SmoothieGirl overstimulation could be it, but he is not really looking out of the windows or anything really, just focussed on us. Our crate is massive and have no travel one at present so no go and didn't want him at our feet for safety reasons. It is quite hard to focus on driving with a vocal dog!! Nekhbet good tip about the exercise, usually we are taking him to exercise but a training session before could be good at settling him a little. Was thinking of having one of us in the back but didn't want him to get used to that and then have issues down the road when we go back to the front?? I'm a beginner at all this so thanks so much for the advice! It's such an annoying problem as he's always been so good up until lately! Maybe just another sign of the onset of teenage rebellion?
  23. Our 4 1/2 month Vizsla puppy has been great in the car up until a few weeks ago. We have him harnessed in the back seat and me and my OH are in the front. Lately every time we get into the car he is quite happy and excited to get in there but once we get into the front its barking non-stop. Think it might have to do with him in the back and us in the front as all i have to do is put a hand on the seat next to him and he settles down a little. We've been reinforcing quiet with clicks and treats but the minute he gets the treat its back to barking again. Any ideas to help this behaviour as he is getting louder and louder (though he sounds more like a seal than a dog!!). We've tried to get him used to the car from day one and regularly (almost every day) take him somewhere. We drove out to the mountains the other day and he did settle.. after half an hour!! Hopefully its not a separation thing, he (and his breed) are quite velcro and don't want to encourage too much of the behaviour. Any ideas?? Or others with experience with the same thing?
  24. We will be socialising but not much walking as Kobi will be 5 months Would be good to meet up with some peoples, look for the crazy Vizsla pup!!
  25. Hey all, can't make another small dog day because of previous engagements, we have a 4 month old very energetic Vizsla who is still learning manners (ie jumps up on ppl and dogs and generally wants to puppy play with everyone) he is happy playing with big and small dogs and just went to a Vizsla fun day and had a great time playing fine with 30 or so other big red dogs. Any opinions (open to whatever you guys think) if it would be OK if we came along to a big dog day? Definitely need some more socialisation!! Don't mind the answer just wanting some opinions!! thanks :D
