  1. Hey guys just saw this on the news.. anyone missing a pig? http://au.news.yahoo.com/video/sa/watch/f37764d1-d879-3b5b-ad3a-45db75a608ed/runaway-pig-turns-up-on-road/ There is only a video for this one. Earlier this morning a man stopped for a pig wandering on the side of the road, very friendly and was even able to feed it! Tried to get someone to help, Council could not pick up an animal other than a cat or a dog and apparently the RSPCA has no responsibility or capacity to pick up uninjured animals (?!). The AWL stepped up on this one and picked up the pig and are waiting on it's owner to come forward. Pretty Pig but sad that that the took so long for someone to do something about it!
  2. Hey all, we decided to have our dog titre tested this year. We have just gotten the results with a high level of pavo but a limited level of distemper. Just wondering if this was a normal result as I would have thought if he had built up immunity to one he would have with the other? Unfortunately we now have to vaccinate for both as apparently the vaccine is mixed together. Any information or experiences would be great, it's been quite interesting to me to get the results even if we now have to vaccinate!
  3. Not sure if anyone else has posted, but this video had me in stitches the other day. I hope my dog is thinking this when we bring out new kitty home. Enjoy
  4. We have a VERY birdy vizsla, who can spend hours a day stalking, pointing and chasing birds but has never managed to catch one. Until the day a spring baby magpie fell out of its very high nest. We tried to keep dog and bird away from each other but finally left it up to fate as we could not supervise the backyard forever. Imagine my surprise when I came home to find vizsla and baby bird chilling and having a snooze together. Apparently they had been inseparable all day!! I am thinking its a baby thing and he knew somehow that it wasn't fair game as he still stalks and chases birds all day!!
  5. How many moles does a ... have? (as they all have the same! but i think most doggy people are aware)
  6. Whipped in Semaphore near Adelaide SA, you can take your pets around the side and into the outdoor area out the back! Pretty much everywhere in Semaphore has water bowls and allow dogs out the front at the tables, while it can get a little mad with so many dogs around in summer its a great environment! Plus the beach is at the end of the street :)
  7. Kiwigirl - They did ask for his most recent vaccination, which we decided to do his booster when he was 12 months so no problem there. I did ask about Titre but they did not know anything about it but did offer for my vet to write an outline/ some more information about it and they would hand it onto their internal vet who would then decide if it was an option. Just wanted to be ready with as much information as possible!
  8. Thank you everyone, there is a lot of good information to think about. We really did want to titre test and hopefully avoid the vaccinations so hopefully if the vet as well as the shelter give the OK it should be good. Thanks again
  9. I think most dogs do realise they are pups, the acti differently, play differently and even smell different. Personally my dog, who is almost 2 has always struggled with basic dog language regardless of meeting a lot of different dogs throughout his first year. He is especially bad with puppies, like Snook was saying, who are not small dog puppies and just doesn't let them off for their puppy behaviour. But I think this is not the norm and generally dogs are pretty understanding when it comes to the puppy variety!!
  10. Thanks everyone for your helpful tips! We had a few things put together for the pet resume but will definitely be adding a few more!
  11. Hey all, So we have Kobi who is 2 in December. We were planning on titre testing next year instead of vaccinating. I have just started volunteering at the AWL and will be working with dogs and cats once a week. From what I understand this test allows a snapshot of your dogs antibodies towards a particular disease (I think it is only a few at our vet rather than the 5 in total usually vaccinated against). From what I have read it can be mostly accurate, but is in fact a snapshot at that particular moment which can differ at other times. What I was really hoping to find out (obviously I will chat to my vet before the time comes) is will my dog be at a higher risk of contracting the disease/virus and will the shelter dogs be at risk at all due to the fact of titre vs vaccinating. I don't want to be the cause of any unnecessary risk for any animal involved. Thank you all for your help!!!
  12. Chewak, My dog has had the same thing with the vomiting since we bought him home. His is caused by too much time in between meals and if he ever skips one on our terms (rather than him being unwell or not wanting to eat) it will happen every time! He is now almost 2 and still hasn't grown out of it. Mind you it doesn;t happen that often as we still feed him twice a day and don't plan to stop any time! Hope it's better for your pup, its certainly no fun!!
  13. Hello everyone, I thought I would try to tap into the collective knowledge of Dolers and put it out there! We are moving in December and obviously want a pet friendly rental. One vizsla and another dog to come next year and would love to be able to have them inside. We currently live in Beverley, West of the city and could live anywhere westside from Semaphore to Seacliff Park! Just wondering as well as the usual avenues if anyone out there has a property, knows someone who may be renting out around that time, or is even leaving their own rental around that time. Any ideas or information would be amazing! It's do-able but obviously more difficult with the dogs inside. Of course the usual references etc. can be provided. Thank YOU!!!
  14. Not sure if it has been posted but came accross this study of the domestication of silver foxes based on behaviour only and resulting in many changes in their appearance also, like floppy ears and tail wagging! http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/2010/09/06/mans-new-best-friend-a-forgotten-russian-experiment-in-fox-domestication/
  15. Absolutely disgusting! As a warning this has also happened in Woodville with a horrible note in the mailbox from the offender. I feel all your worries as I am also on the corner with a vacent block
  16. Damn I am working, but noticed on the FAQ section that you can bring dogs anytime!! http://www.moonlight.com.au/faqs.php?location=Adelaide
  17. As long as meat is de-frosted outside of the "danger zone" (ie. a fridge rather than microwave) you are able to re-freeze and consume. We have done it with meat out of the freezer and eaten it and it was fine!
  18. In regards to teaching the pup to wait.. we used the TOT from pretty much 8 weeks old. It uses a tie out to ensure pup does not lunge for food and you just wait until they are under control. It has worked wonders for us and Kobi was able to do 5min stays before 6 months old. They are awesome now he is 1!! http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/64101-triangle-of-temptation/ Gentle comes with what others have said, teaching the pup to have some control and the leave it (while food is in a fist until they ignore it) helps a lot. Just keep at it! Good on you for getting onto it.. I know dogs who's gentle is non-existent at 1 year old!

  20. I also found it easier to do it outside in the sunshine, or if not sun hold a torch underneath and shine through the nail. Makes it easier to see! Or if really nervous about it just do a little bit every so many days until you learn and puppy learns!
  21. They're great aren't they?! We got one for a pup who got anxiety in the car which meant he barked and whined continuously. He now goes dopey in the shirt and just curls up and sleeps the whole time.. was very useful when they are sick also. Congrats on finding something that helps your girl!
  22. Just saw she's been eating more, and the heat definitely makes a difference at our house, even 30 degrees! Kobi came to us from the breeder as the "fussy eater" who would just pick at food. He's a very slow eater so as other have said we leave the food down for around 15 min then take it away.. if he doesnt eat it at breakfast, he gets it at lunch and so on, he will soon learn that food time is food time! We also made the decision to feed 1/2 raw and there has never been a time he has turned it down! A few chicken wings should be enough for a meal Kobi's always been a "fine" (skinny) dog, ever since 8 weeks so I wouldnt worry to much about not being puppy chubby! Good luck, im sure it will pick up once all the newness settles down.. enjoy he's so cute!
  23. Not sure what they are like.. but look quite good (and cheap)! http://www.scoopon.com.au/adelaide
