The thought of your gorgeous long awaited baby getting a nasty disease whilst out and about at such a young age would be a tragedy. PS your puppy is very sweet. If you are not happy with varying advice given here, why not just get advice from the breeder? After all, they are the people who know the breed and can advise you re diet, exercise and socialisation, to ensure the pup is given the best possible start in life Thankyou, I am in contact with the breeder and she is very helpful answering questions I have. I havent gone into buying a Berner with my eyes shut. Nor do I ignore advise and guidelines provided regarding the breed. I guess thats my point tho. People act like others must know nothing. Does anybody think that perhaps people are just interested on sharing...not doom and gloom all the time? Just made a simple comment about taking him outside around the block. Didnt ask for anybody to give me their opinion as to whether I made the right decision or whether its too young or whether he might die.

Yes he's already 6 kilos and I guess we should start training him to not expect he can be picked up all the time We went for our first outside walk today, it took about 40minutes to walk around my block (usually only 5mins!) ... he doesnt like the leash too much But slow and steady we made it home so that was a good start I guess!

Perhaps it was just my view on things. But thats ok, I do appreciate I did ask a question and it was answered. I believe many on DOL have a long history of knowledge that is very helpful. Thanks again

She has retained the breeding rights, but if we decide to purchase a female of our own to breed we are free to use him as the stud even tho she has breeding rights. Hope that makes sense?

LOL was an intense one to watch , having a copy of the contract and understanding all the detail does do a lot to rest the mind Your baby is beautiful , I hope he grows into a stunning boy LOL yes I know. I dont take criticism at the best of times and it kinda felt like a bit of an attack on my intelligence from a few members. Anyway, I'm the one who has to live with him and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. and thankyou, I do think he's gorgeous too

Thankyou to everyone for their replies regarding my breeders terms contract for a Bernese Mt dog. As some people have asked, thought i would update, yes we did purchase our pup his name is Dante and all is well. Discussed the contract with her, its only a page and half of it didnt apply as we have a male not a bitch. She even penned in and signed extra clauses that we requested. Much less hassle and stress in person than I was expecting to encounter. We get to use him as a stud if ever we decided to buy a female down the line...Years away people so please dont start hounding me about it. When she uses him as stud we get one of his pups half price, or a discount off a pup from a different litter. So thanks again everyone. Cant believe how intense people can be on here tho, probably the last thread I'll ever start asking for other people's opinions!

So you pay for the pup, then spend around $500 getting the pup scored, and then pay $800 to get full papers? That sounds absolutely rediculous to me. The breeder should pay for the scoring unless you also intend to breed the dog. If you pay for the hip / elbow scoring, I do not see how you would be expected to pay an extra $800 for a piece of paper. No Way. Do you personally have a reason for needing main papers? I know. when did dogs stop being dogs and become ridiculously expensive just because they were hard to come by? but anyway, no, we dont particularly want one on full papers. We discussed taking him on terms on the proviso that we could buy another pup from her 1/2 price down the line when she used him as a stud

As I mentioned earlier in my posts, there are only 2 breeders of Berners in QLD. One wont sell to me or anyone outside of their family and friends, and the other is the breeder who has a pup for me. I have personally emailed all of the 23 "breeders" listed on Dogz Online (australia wide) and received many replies, almost 90% stating that they are not breeding their Berners anymore. One had pups but all were sold early on. A couple in NZ had pups also but wouldnt ship to Aus... so yes, she is the ONLY breeder selling publicly to my knowledge. Feel free to search for yourself if you wish, and I'd love to hear if you know of any other breeders who are still breeding, I would be very appreciative.

I am in the 'let you know at 8weeks' boat... just found out actually. My personal opinion with breeders who run this way, is that they have SOOOOO much interest in pups that it really doesnt matter. If you dont like him, someone else will. If you're too annoying, someone else wont be, if you ask to many questions...someone else will just shut up and pay the money. Just my opinion.

As I mentioned before, we live almost a 3hr drive away. She did state that breeders terms simply means that if he is a male and suitable for breeding, she retains breeding rights and can use him at her expense. This is fine by me, so long as we get some benefit. If we have to do the running around...and come away with nothing then I wont buy him. she has two prices, one is $1800 for limited, or $2600 for full papers. We will pay $1800 for him on terms. agreed it is a reduced rate, but we wouldnt be bothering unless we are given another pup for it down the line. My husband isnt so concerned. As he said to me, possession is nine tenths of the law, and if he's in our yard, he's ours...full stop. I can understand the two prices if one was for a show quality specimen and the other for pet quality. Two different prices for two different dog but not two prices for the one dog. If the dog is pet quality it should not be bred from. If the dog is show quality why is not being shown. Sorry I would run a mile. I have never known a whole lot about limited & full etc and what pricing is reasonable. All pups are $1800 initially until 12mths when they are hip/elbow scored and then if it was purchased with a view to breeding, and the scores are within standard, its an extra $800 for the full papers. I do believe she has good intentions, and she seems lovely in person. Should I be forceful/pushy with what we want out of this contract? Its hard tho as she is the only breeder here (the other wont sell to anyone outside family...go figure??), and out of the 23breeders listed here on DOL, only 2 are ever looking at breeding again. Yes I do think its a good idea however she isnt the best at emailing. She makes me feel a little like I am an inconvenience for asking my questions. She sent thru pics of the litter but it was of when they were first born, so we dont know what he looks like either. I have called also but its a 50/50 chance whether she answers

We went to meet the breeder a while ago, she is one of only 2 here in QLD so there wasnt a lot of choice either but I feel she is quite nice and very professional. She did say that for a female on terms we could arrange a pup for 1/2 price but she didnt say anything about for the male. She has a lot in QLD out on breeders terms, and she said that she hasnt even seen more than half of those since they were sold. She said she just likes to have the option there if need be. I just wasnt sure, I mean we took him on terms in the hopes that we would be able to have another pup either free or the price of one as you mentioned. But if we have to drive there and back to take him to her, there and back when we pick him up, and we get nothing from it I feel it seems pointless to take him on terms...?? It was a bit weird, as after we visited her the first time around May we decided to put a deposit down and did so in July. She had one litter already and 2 females pregnant when we were there. I contacted her via email to let her know about our deposit but did not hear that there was a pup available until last week when she contacted me to say that if we took a male on terms we could have him this weekend. So I was excited to be getting him but just annoyed that we didnt have more notice to say if or when one would be available. So I dont know... I do want him, as there is a long wait otherwise and I have contacted a lot of other breeders in NSW & VIC but nobody is breeding or has puppies.

Yes I agree we probably should have made certain of the terms before we agreed to buy him. The breeder is a 2/5hr drive away so we'll be sure to sit down before any money is handed over and get it all in writing. She has agreed that if we ever purchased a female that we are allowed to use him as stud, and for anybody else we agree to let him be used. She seems fairly reasonable but its just hard to know exactly what we should be asking for in return.

Does anyone know what sort of things we can expect to be signing in the contract? The breeder hasnt guaranteed that we will be getting a puppy or a discount on a puppy or anything from the deal... so can I make sure its in the contract first? what rights do I have to negotiate what happens, ie when she wants to breed from him who drives where etc? thanks
