If she is doing this a bit like you have said, i think you should start keeping a diary. Every time you worm her, heartworm, flea etc, write it in there. Any time you do anything not of every day nature, write it down. There has to be a reason why she stops eating if she is eating well in between. Does she get on well with the other animals in your house hold? Has there been any stress in the house of late? I would be worried if my dogs didn't eat for 2 days, but my dogs aren't fussy. I am sorry i can't be of more help. I hope she is ok though.

Under The Circumstances, What's Best?
Alison replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Erny, I was using Revolution on both my dogs, until I worked out that my young boy was reacting to it. I am starting him on Interceptor Spectrum next month, as I was also told this was the most gentle on the body. I will continue to use the remaining Revolution I have on my girl because she doesn't have any problems with it. During Winter I took my boy off all heartworm and flea medication as it is safe to do so when the weather drops below a certain temp. I believe that it is too risky to take your dogs off heartworm preventative all together though if you live in a heartworm area or travel with your dogs to/through heartworm areas. In regards to your question about heartworm being treated when caught in the early stages, i think the problem with that is that symptoms don't show until the final stages when the body starts to shut down. I would *think* that if you were to blood test you would need to do so every 45 days. 0 - 45 days after infestation is when it is safe to kill heartworm in dogs, that's why the monthly tablets need to be given at least every 45 days. Please post any information you come across as I am very interested in this subject. My boy doesn't tolerate chemicals very well. I should add, then when i was looking into heartworm treatment and I looked into non treatment and natural therapies, the response I got from all vets (including natural therapy vets) was that heartworm prevention was a necessary evil. -
I give the capsules, but i actually open the capsules and mix it with their food. One capsule each daily. I read somewhere that you should always open capsules for dogs as by the time they have broken the capsule down, they miss out on absorbing most of the vitamins/minerals. Sometimes dogs just poop capsules out whole. So powder or capsules is good. The thing i like about GLM is that it is doing them good, not just hiding symptoms.

Perhaps look at NZ Green Lip Muscles and see if they may assist your dog. I use them and they reduce inflamation. This is what I use as a preventative on young dogs rather than the joint supplements.

Monthly Worm-prevention Treatment
Alison replied to Poo d'état's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You need to keep in mind that you cannot forget if you do it every 45 days. If you go over the 45 days, your dog could get heartworm disease. So if there is a chance you could forget, like the OP, then it's best to stick to the once a month then you have a few week grace period each month. -
Post deleted. Went to the vets, question no longer relevant.

I think my boy has this too. So what is involved in the cleaning? Can you just wipe the end with the saline? I sure hope so

Monthly Worm-prevention Treatment
Alison replied to Poo d'état's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Give it to them now and don't stress, it's actually probably perfect timing. You really only need to worm for heartworm every 45 days, but they say monthly just to make it easier for people to remember. I only heartworm every 45 days, no point putting more chemicals in their body than needed. -

Age You First Had Your Dog Checked - Dog Chiro Or Similar
Alison replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have been thinking about taking my boy. He has had bowen but I think he might need some chiro. He tends to roach his back at times, probably from the way he tears around. He is only 12 months so i was worried about it damaging him??? -
Diffent meats and offal contain different levels of nutrients, how do you know that you are getting the right ratios? Also, an over supply of calcium in it's unnatural form is not easily discreted from the canines body. There is alot of evidence against feeding calcium supplements, i suggest you do a search. This only backs up my statement that the grains add no nutritional value except to add roughage. I wouldn't feed a product that's main ingredients had no nutritional value to my dog when i can feed a bone, that will have the same effect (prevent anal gland impaction) and also provide exceptional nutritional value. Hopefully kazzie you can let other people have an opinion and not take over this thread

Ingredients: Complete mix contains a combination of mixed cereal grains (rolled oats, cracked barley, soybean meal, flax seed meal, and whole oats), dried vegetables and fruit, dried garlic, dried parsley, dried barley grass, calcium powder, yeast powder, kelp granules, lecithin granules and vitamin C powder I wouldn't feed anything that has calcium powder in it for a start. There is no phophorus mentioned so from the very beginning your calcium to phosphorus ratio is right out of wack. Top of the ingredients list is mixed cereal grains, my dogs don't eat grains, simply because they provide no nutritional value to them. Sure they provide roughage, but so do bones, but atleast raw meaty bones provide the correct calcium to phosphorus ratio in a NATURAL form as well as minerals etc, etc. I got given a packet of this and it went straight in the bin.

Firstly, i can't imagine why they would have sent the dog home. Secondly, i am not a vet, but i can't see any use in vaccinating the dog once it has it. The idea of a vaccination is to give a dose of the virus in order for the immune system to build up an immunity to it. The dog already has the virus so the vaccination has no purpose. And no, you should never vaccinate a sick dog. I might be wrong, there could be a reason for it, but i just don't see it???

Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets
Alison replied to Alison's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks, i couldn't see how they would help either. What about tissue salts? I believe these can be quite beneficial... -
I am thinking of adding these to my dogs diet, have been told that they can be good for the hair and skin. Can you give too much Iron, Zink, Copper or Cobalt? ORGANIC IRON & TRACE MINERAL TABLETS FOR DOGS & GREYHOUNDS ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Each tablet contains: Iron 39mg, Zinc 33mg, Copper 1.2mg and Cobalt 1.5mg (as Proteinates) DESCRIPTION: Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets are a source of iron and minerals for greyhounds and dogs of all ages to supplement diets that may be deficient. Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets contain iron, copper and cobalt to maximise a greyhounds potential to produce essential blood elements. The inclusion of zinc helps with bone, tendon and ligament development. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: One tablet per 30 kg bodyweight daily. SPECIAL FEATURES: Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets have been formulated by veterinarians to boost the haemoglobin content of the blood, making it possible to improve a greyhound's performance to its genetic limit. The tablets have been designed to increase stamina in the racing greyhound. Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets contain iron, copper and cobalt which all work together to maintain normal metabolism, assist in bone development and help in the formation of red blood cells. The addition of zinc provides an absorbable formula crucial to good ligament and tendon formation, and is required for normal bone and cartilage development. Zinc also optimises the removal of carbon dioxide from the red blood cells, thus enhancing racing performance and general well being. Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets contain only Mineral Proteinates, (prepared under a patented process) which have a far greater absorption from the small intestine than minerals formulated in a chemical form. Mineral Proteinates are true Chelates which closely resemble the naturally occurring minerals found in milk, fruit and vegetables, which in turn provide optimal absorption.

Large Breed Growing Too Quickly?
Alison replied to boxerbob's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Puppies do grow quickly, you just don't want them to grow too quickly. If she isn't overweight and your vet is very happy with her, than don't stress. Have you spoken to your breeder to see if she is growing at the same rate as her litter mates? Your breeder should be able to take a look and tell you if she is growing too quick. Otherwise if you are local, take her to a dog show, someone would be happy to take a look at her and give you some idea. Generally speaking though, your vet should know. -
Dublduck Scissors & Thinning Shears?
Alison replied to Bonzawani's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I don't know what Dublduck are like, but if looking for a good middle range scissor, I like Wahl and got mine pretty cheap from Clipper World You can also get your Coat King from there cheap. -
That is correct, all capsules should be split and the contents emptied into the food so they can absorb it
-
Easiyo here too. I love that I can make 1L of the probiotic blend for $3. The dogs love it too.

I have to agree, if he isn't running up and down the stairs or jumping a heap of stairs at a time or falling down them i can't see how it would damage him?? I wouldn't let him go up and down them hundreds of times a day though. The best and only exercise a pup should get is self exercise. Let them exercise themselves, playing, etc. They will stop when they tire.

These might suit you better GSD Mum. Give Beverly a call if you have any questions, they are VERY helpful. naturapetics I have used a few of them and I got the Rescuepetics yesterday. It has extra flower essenses that the normal Rescue Remedy does not have. The Thunderpetics one sounds like what you are after.
