Ok, no worries

That is your dog, not mine. As mentioned techniques used in training imho should be adapted to the dog, not the other way around. Don't assume I haven't been there already with those teachniques and that I bully my dog

seriously nobody knows any clubs ;)
-
One club got me doing that a couple of years ago and keeping the distance- the martingale was a very weak tool for me to use with her.

I'm not talking about positive/negative reinforcement as P+, I misjudged that most people would of categorised it with trainers that call themselves Purely positive - clickers and treats eg even though technically that is not all positive training.

I live in the hills, so anything even in the CBD is easy to get too. I know people who have trained in the GSDWA club and last I heard it is only P+, I don't think they let you use a prong collar or check chain, but halti's, martingale instead which don't suit my dog, I may be wrong so I might just reconfirm that.

thanks for the comment about Abby

Hi, I'm looking at getting involved in obedience again with my dog but am looking for a club that has more of a balanced view on training instead of only P+ which does not suit the temperament of my dog. If people have any information and prefer to PM please do

I haven't had much luck either finding nice leather in Aus, I'm happy with what I found o/s but will be holding off from spending on doggy gear for a while now I think

Made in Germany Hunter I bought an elkskin leather collar and lead from a Petshop in Keswick England from the Hunter range, it is incredibly soft and and easy on your hands-still very strong. I haven't come across this kind of quality before so I had to share and also ask if anyone else has heard of them and happy with their products ? It is kinda ironic I had just previously been to the WUSV schutzhund competition in Krefeld, Germany and bought some stuff there only to find even better quality collars, leads in a Petshop( only sold equipment ) in a little Lake district town in England LOL The hunter range is made in Germany yet wasn't at any of the stalls at the WUSV comp aswell.

I did the distance learner course, finished in June and am waiting to see if I have passed I flew over from Perth to Melbourne for the two block training sessions. There were a few hiccups, one still waiting to have assignments sent back from months ago-have results though, but overall I was happy with how things were conducted and really enjoyed the course, the experience has definately boosted my knowledge We had a prison detection dog handler, council ranger and an RSPCA obedience instructor in our group so people come from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. I had previously done obedience, agility with my dogs and had a little knowledge of behavioural theory and drives in dog training but doing the course really filled in the gaps and gave a me a solid foundation to continue on with I hope ;)

Ray Coppinger Seminar - Sydney
kateshep replied to Kelpie-i's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If I wasn't going to be overseas this would be something I wouldn't want to miss. -
I went to Cloverdale in Belmont for a while last year, however they do not allow any correction collars which as a result my dog didn't progress so well. So if your dog doesn't need a correction collar or anything more than a martingale, I would recommend it as a good place to train. edited spelling.

The Beginning Of The End
kateshep replied to Herr Rottweiler's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have heard of it before and a JRT !! but if they have achieved ( B.C's and labs) the titles I would guess (?) they are not working using their defence drives only prey, which is not what Schutzhund was intended to do as a character test. -

Nekhbet wrote: Are you saying schutzhund dogs are trained just only using prey drive ? If you are whilst this may be the case for some sport dogs( either because they have only ever been trained this way or genetically they can only work in prey drive) this is not what Schutzhund was originally intended to do as a character test. In protection it is supposed to test the dog's ability to withstand stress, and thus they have to be trained in defence, ( if they have the right genetics) and fight drive. I'm sure you know this Nehkbet but many reading do not and from what you said may think it only tests prey drive. If that were the case then non-guarding breeds with high prey drive such as field line labradors, herding border collies would be equally good candidates for top schutzhund competition. Alot of top working line german shepherd breeders look for stud dogs that do have the genetics to do this training, which shows the dogs have excellent nerves. If they can do that and have the bombproof nerves to handle it they can have the nerves to handle so many other situations. It is a trait many breeders want not just for protection but for any working scenairio such as SAR, narcotics detection and even just living with the family. As long as breeders keep looking for those qualities, the police, military will want to keep using the top schutzhund lines for their line of work and breeding programs.
